Octavo, paperback,304 pp.,colour photographs. The companion volume to the Collins BTO Guide to British Birds, this guide covers all the rare and scarce birds that have occurred in Britain and Ireland five times or more, as of February 2015. 'The Rarest of the Rare' section lists all the species that have occurred fewer than five times; taken in combination, this means that every species of wild bird that has ever occurred in Britain is mentioned. Species descriptions comprise the bulk of the book, and the text and photographs describe and illustrate the key features needed to identify these birds with confidence. Confusion species are included, as are vocalisation details for species whose identification it aids. The photographs have been chosen carefully to show key features that are described in the accompanying text; they also give clues to the usual habitat favoured by the bird and its typical posture. Many of the photographs are seen here for the first time.

Octavo, paperback,384colour photographs and illustrations. New Naturalist # 130. A definitive natural history of the Yorkshire Dales, covering the range of wildlife habitats, rich cultural heritage and ecological history of one of our best-loved National Parks. The Yorkshire Dales National Park is a special place: its outstanding scenery and the diversity of habitats is perhaps unrivalled in any other National Park in Britain. This rich biodiversity has provided a great attraction for naturalists over several centuries. But to fully appreciate the present-day plant and animal communities, their status and the constraints upon them, it is important to have an appreciation of the geology and landscape history of the National Park, including the role that human populations have played in modifying and shaping their environment. In this long-anticipated New Naturalist volume, John Lee introduces the National Park, exploring both its geology and geomorphology, and describing the role of early naturalists and the Yorkshire Naturalists Union in recording and understanding the natural history of the Dales. He describes individual major habitats or groups of habitats which underline the ecological importance of the Dales.

This book provides a comprehensive account of the natural history of Britain and Ireland's inland waters, many of which are popular holiday destinations. The study of life in British lakes and rivers has been traditionally neglected in natural history publications, and yet the intricacies of plant and animal ecology as a whole can be readily studied in a pond or lake.

Octavo,626 pp.,colour photographs, maps, fine copy in dustwrapper. New Naturalist 129. The word 'alien' can conjure up a range of sentiments including fear, dislike and also fascination. It is used to describe strange beings from Mars, human migrants, and non-native plants and animals - the term is employed by biologists to indicate organisms that have been introduced by people to new territories. Alien plants are the topic of interest of many professional research teams and amateur enthusiasts around the world. As a group these plants are common, conspicuous, pestiferous, beautiful, edible, and otherwise useful or harmful. In the British Isles there are very roughly as many species of naturalised or recurrent alien flowering plants as natives and, besides that, there are numerous other less common ones. Many species have been an integral part of our wild flora for such a long time that we can no longer be sure whether they are in fact native or alien. Even some recently discovered species are similarly problematic. Aliens are proving to have such wide interest simply because they cannot be ignored, and because they add diversity to our otherwise rather limited flora.

Quarto,352 pp.,colour photographs, bookplate, laminated boards. The Collins New Naturalist series is the longest-running and arguably the most influential natural history series in the world with over 100 volumes published in over 60 years. Being a numbered series, with a very low print run for some volumes, New Naturalist publications have been and continue to be highly collectable. Second-hand copies of the rarer volumes, in very good condition, can command high prices. As such, there is considerable interest in a detailed bibliography and history of the series. This volume offers a detailed insight into the fascinating phenomenon that has gripped Britain since just after World War II and which reflects the country's continued enthusiasm for wildlife and nature publishing generally. With previously unpublished in-depth insight into the workings of the series and its collectors, the book will comprehensively cover every aspect of the New Naturalists, from rare editions produced for Bloomsbury and the Reader's Union to foreign editions, interviews with the iconic cover artists and well-known naturalists such as Chris Packham and Alan Titchmarsh telling the story of their own fascination with the series.
