This illustrated survey examines the art, design, fashion and architecture of 1920s London alongside wider social and political ideas about Britain, modernism, mass democracy and popular culture. It provides a framework for understanding the cultural maelstrom of the decade. London was at the heart of 1920s debates about the future of Britain. What was the London of the future to be in a world shaken by catastrophic wars, revolutions and scientific miracles? Was the British capital to be a Babylon of unrestrained capitalism, American-style; a mechanistic machine for living, Soviet-style; or a global Imperial capital? London was the place where these alternative visions jostled for space with traditional ideas about Englishness and Britishness. The book discusses these debates in terms of how they were made physical through London's streets and buildings, the clothes, material goods and creative works produced, worn and used by Londoners. It shows London emerging from the decade as a city for the modern world, British-style, newly-democratized, a unique mix of international modernism and distinctly post-modern diversity, irony and pragmatism. This text accompanies an exhibition at the Museum of London which opens in September 2003. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. This work attributes the popularity of golf to the introduction of the solid gutta percha golf ball in 1848 and the American rubber-cored ball in 1900. The book describes, in the light of these dramatic golf ball changes, how the ball and club evolved, the types of material used, the people who made the clubs and balls, those who have excelled at the game, and the effects the implements had on the development of the swing and on golf-course design. There are illustrated chapters on golfing art and golfing memorabilia, as well as shorter chapters on patents, designs and the origins of the game and related games. Included at the back is a directory of golf-club- and ball-makers and golf artists. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. This study tells the parallel stories of the evolution of Brighton, and neighbouring Hove, and the development of the practice of photography, from its invention through to the 1990s. It is also the story of the author's search for the photographs that illustrate the book so eloquently, and his investigation, through these images, of his own social, cultural and geographical roots. The majority of the 145 photographs are previously unpublished and provide a vivid evocation of the varied artistic aspirations and vernacular applications of the photographic medium. The book includes images by such internationally renowned masters as William Henry Fox Talbot, Bill Brandt, Walker Evans and Henri Cartier-Bresson. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. This work is devoted to the very few women who, from 1750 to the present, have assembled significant art collections. The authors consider how and why these women collected, and explore the obstacles they overcame to assemble the objects. The book closely examines the characteristics of their collections, many of which can be seen today, sometimes in their entirety, in public museums and galleries. In the introduction the authors provide a general survey of the different collecting fields that appeal especially to women, including jewellery, fans, lace and textiles. It also looks at women who venture into new areas, collecting items such as fossils, insects and theatre memorabilia. In each case a leading pioneer is cited with a brief look at the nature of her collection. They observe how, with the shift from the eclectic mix of works of art and curiosities of nature collected in the 18th century to the focus on antiques in the 19th century, women were - whether by design or otherwise - collecting the possessions of their predecessors. The chapters look in detail at 30 great women collectors, each prominent in their fields. Rather than presenting these women individually, they are grouped together according to common themes such as "royal consorts" or "20th century creators of museums". The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
