The EY Exhibition: Impressionists in London: French Artists in Exile charts the story of the French artists who took refuge in London during and after the devastating Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune. Following these traumatic events there was a creative flourishing in London as the exiles responded to British culture and social life -regattas, processions, parks, and of course the Thames. Many artists returned to France after the Entente Cordiale in 1904, which in the case of the impressionists in general and Monet in particular, marked the culmination of an artistic project initiated in exile. New texts from a range of leading writers draw out key figures and events from this remarkable period, revealing the artists' connections with patrons, art dealers and British artists, and considering both the contribution they made to British art and art education and the impact their cross-Channel experiences had on French art. Lavishly illustrated throughout with over 170 beautiful works (including drawing and sculpture as well as painting), this significant and timely book shows us London seen through French eyes and illuminates a key period in this enduringly popular movement. Stanley Spencer is best-known for two things: his immortalization of Cookham, the Berkshire village where he was born and lived for most of his life; and his celebration of sex both in his painted works and in his unconventional attitude to relationships. This book shows how Spencer's work grew out of places, experiences and social relations aiming to enrich his visionary imagination by illuminating the groundedness in landscapes, homes and human relationships that he felt so strongly. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. A society of young artists and writers, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was founded in London in 1848. They were known for controversially rebelling against the classical academic painting conventions of the day in favour of a meeting of medieval romanticism and a new realism, and were inspired by theories of John Ruskin who urged artists to 'go to nature', resulting in subject matter predominantly dealing with religious themes, love, death, and subjects from literature and poetry. The principal members of the group were William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais, and Dante Gabriel Rossetti who all produced seminal and well-loved paintings such as "The Awakening Conscience" (1853), "Ophelia" (1851-2) and "The Beloved" (1855-6) respectively. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. Stanley Spencer is seen as one of the most innovative British painters of his era. His works include pre-First World War paintings and complex pieces of the mid-1930s, produced at a time of marital and stylistic crisis. This catalogue celebrates the achievements of an artist who explored, experimented and developed his work over five decades and accompanies the exhibition of Spencer's work at Tate Britain, presenting him as a major artist of the 20th century who was profoundly engaged with the shifting nature of modern life. The book includes an essay by the painter and writer Timothy Hyman which focuses on the prolonged but strangely fruitful crisis of the 1930s, while examining both the visionary and realist strands in Spencer's imagination. Cultural historian Patrick Wright discusses Spencer's return to England after the First World War and the circles in which he moved. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Good. One of a series exploring the life and work of major artists associated with St Ives, this study of Alfred Wallis (1855-1942) sets out to revise previous accounts of his life in the light of new research. It also discusses the gradual development of his painting over 17 years of activity. Wallis spent most of his life in the Cornish ports of Newlyn, Penzance and St Ives, and went to sea as a young man. His main occupation was as a dealer in marine supplies, and it was only at the age of 70, and after the death of his wife, that he took up painting "for company". He sold his works for a few pence to anyone who wanted them, and died in the poorhouse near Penzance. He is now recognized as one of the most original British artists of the 20th century. After his encounter with Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood in St Ives in 1928, his pictures of boats and harbours, produced on odd-shaped boards with the use of ordinary ship's paint, were an inspiration to artists seeking a new approach. The directness of his "primitive" vision and the object-like quality of his paintings were highly influential in the development of British Modernism. The book discusses the mythology that quickly grew up around Wallis's life, and at the sustained interest in an irascible eccentric whose work affected a whole generation of British artists. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.
