Paperback. Condizione: Fair. It started as a search for heroes. It became a hunt for the most elusive equestrian charlatan of all time. If Frank Hopkins is to be believed, he led one of the most exciting, challenging and colorful (albeit unrecorded) lives in the late nineteenth century. No one rode more miles, eluded more danger, or befriended more famous people than he did. During the 1930s and 40s the self-proclaimed legend told a naive American public that he had won nearly five hundred endurance races, including an imaginary race across Arabia on a mythical mustang named Hidalgo. Hopkins' remarkable career supposedly began when he became a dispatch rider for the US government on his twelfth birthday in 1877. According to his mythology, this Renaissance Man of the Old West went on to work as a buffalo hunter, Indian fighter, African explorer, endurance racer, trick rider, bounty hunter, Rough Rider, big game guide, secret agent, Pinkerton detective and star of the Wild West show. Experts beg to differ. This book contains an unprecedented study, undertaken by more than seventy experts in five countries, ranging from the Curator of the Buffalo Bill Museum to the former Sultan of Yemen. These academics investigated the historical improbability of Hopkins' claims and weighed him on his merit, not his myth. The resulting exhaustive study revealed that Hopkins had maintained a spirited disregard for the truth, plagiarized material from famous authors, slandered genuine American heroes and perpetrated a massive fraud for nearly one hundred years. Far from being the star of Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West show for 32 years, for example, the counterfeit cowboy was discovered working as a subway tunnel digger in Philadelphia and a horse-handler for Ringling Brothers Circus. It is his endurance racing pretensions, however, that have brought Hopkins his greatest notoriety and made him the hero of a Hollywood movie. Yet there is not even a documented photograph of Frank Hopkins in the saddle Here then are all the known writings of Frank T. Hopkins, published in their entirety for the first time in history.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. A book comes along like this once in a lifetime. You read it as a small child, or even an adult, and never forget the images it conjures up of a wonderful Englishman who lives in the mysterious forests of faraway Burma and of the kind native people who teach him about their lovely country. But most of all, you never forget the elephants For this is a story about those magnificent creatures. Though he was officially known as Lt. Colonel J. H. Williams, the author was known to the world at large as Elephant Bill. That is because he spent 25 years living with the elephants in the mountains and forests of Burma. There he trained them to haul teak logs out of the isolated jungles. Yet this is also a story of great courage, because when the Second World War struck it also came to Burma. The Japanese Imperial Army planned to confiscate the Burmese elephants, drafting them to make the bridges and railways they needed to invade India. When he learned of these plans to put his beloved animals to a war-like purpose, Elephant Bill knew what had to be done. The mighty kings of the jungle had to be evacuated to safety. This is thus the story not only of the peaceful days in the jungle, starting in 1921, but also the story of the largest elephant rescue in history. It tells the amazing account of how Elephant Bill, along with his friends and family, rode 45 of the great beasts across the mountains of Burma, before reaching safety in faraway India. A classic then. A classic now. Elephant Bill is a blessing to any library and a literary treasure.…

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. By the early 1930s America had one literary treasure that risked his life to please its readers. Richard Halliburton had already become a best-selling travel author and could have retired comfortably on the immense wealth gained from the sale of his first two books. Yet some men are born to dare, and Halliburton was one these. New Worlds to Conquer was Halliburton's third book and contains a knapsack full of that adventurer's gold - dreams brought to reality by the alchemy of his courage and daring. The book details how Halliburton set off for Latin America in search of adventure, and find it he did. He dived to the bottom of the Mayan Well of Death, from which hundreds of skeletons had been dredged, then swam fifty miles down the length of the Panama Canal. Not content, he climbed to the crest of Mexico's lofty Mount Popocatepetl, twice, and roamed over the infamous Devil's Island. Yet his most amazing adventure occurred when he had himself marooned on the same island which had once held Robinson Crusoe captive. Somewhere a lizard stirred the leaves . Furtively I looked about me, realizing that in the darkness the boa-constrictors would be abroad creeping forth from the ancient tombs and slinking down the leafy avenues, Halliburton wrote. This is Halliburton at is best - fatalistic about his own safety, poetic about his chances of survival, and determined to bring home a hair-raising tale of adventure from the Latin lands of legend. …

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. What do you do for excitement after you and your wife have made adventure travel history? If you're Dana and Ginger Lamb, authors of Enchanted Vagabonds, you put away your famous canoe, turn away from the sea, and march inland, bound this time not for the misty green waves of the Pacific, but the forbidding green hills of the unexplored Mayan Jungle. Quest for the Lost City is the story of how the Lambs returned to their old Spanish speaking haunts. Only this time they were not roaming in general. They were seeking in particular for the source of a legend, the fabled lost city of the Mayas. For more than 2,000 miles the authors traveled in search of clues to this ancient riddle. They marched through the northern deserts of Mexico, making their way at last to the jungles of Chiapas, Mexico. There they encountered a series of adventures that even their hardened souls were not prepared for. They were attacked by animals and insects. A close friend died a mysterious death. After finding a clue to the lost city, they were brought up short by the Barrier Cliffs, a giant wall of stone which they traveled through, not over, with the aid of some primitive wooden torches. In short, if you are seeking adventure travel at its best, then go no further. Amply illustrated with photographs taken on their legendary journey, Quest for the Lost City remains one of the most exciting exploration books of the 1950s.…
