Alexis de Tocqueville (1805 - 1859) was one of the greatest political theorists of the 19th century. Reads more like a discussion in political philosophy than a history thesis. Mather (1857-1951), on the front paste-down; this copy also contains a one page ALS from Landscape Architect, Warren Henry Manning (1860-1938), who designed the gardens at Mather's home "Gwinn", and remained a friend and correspondent. Manning sent this copy of Brooks Adams' book to Mather, and Mather has added his own name and Manning's name and the date received: 2/20/[19]20, in ink to the title-page. Contents of the letter: "The Manning Manse North Billerica Mass. Feb. 10 1920 Dear Mather Thro the zeal of my office and myself to learn how Mass. was emancipated two books of a kind were secured. After I had waded thro a Preface of 168 pages [in Brooks Adams' book] to learn that "cahos" was the "core of the universe" and that Moses was a fakir I began to touch the fringe of the Emancipation Story and to learn why the author kicked himself in the opening of his Preface for being so sassy about the big men of the formative days of Massachusetts whom he put in a very superior plane of pious zeal and efficient action and then called them bad men who failed. Knowing your interest in work of your [Mather] ancestors and believing you would be interested in all phases of these brilliant men's actions and motives as interpreted by an able writer and thinker of today I am sending my extra copy to you.
