Jacket photograph: Depiction of the Haspel van Pouchon: a machine that integrates the unwinding and reeling of silk in one process. The method was adopted by the VOC in 1779, some twenty years after the British and some local merchants had started using it in Bengal. In fact, the VOC had long resisted its introduction, as had many of the silk~producing peasants of Bengal. The Dutch thought the method was too expensive while the peasants detested having one stage in the production of silk taken out of their hands, losing part of their income. As we see Indians and Europeans together resisting the new industrial age, the picture symbolises the last phase of the so~called Age of Partnership.…

God Hanuman has an important place in India and is worshipped by millions of people. He is a God who is the archetype of honesty loyalty and courage. More than any other folk God Hanuman is endowed with human qualities so much cherished in the Indian tradition. There is no scholarly work in English on Hanuman that utilises Sanskrit literature to delineate his importance as a God and as confident of Rama. Although Hanuman is a popular folk God in India he has not received attention commensurate with his popularity from scholars of religion and mythology. This study seeks to fill this gap and explores the human and superhuman role of Hanuman in Sanskrit texts. With the Ramayana as the basic source Sanskrit plays and Puranas have also been studied to unravel the complexity of Hanuman's personality and its development as a character in flesh and blood. Hanuman is also analysed in the context of religious tradition centred on Ramayana. The study focuses on the evolution and change in the theology of Hanuman. He appears as an incarnation of Siva a God in his own right a tribal deity and a hero God with power and virility who destroys evil. At a mundane level Hanuman is an ideal human an upright man a trusted friend of Rama a statesman and a brave warrior. In the bhakti tradition he is the lord the object of bhakti. 83 pp.…

Hardbound. Condizione: As New. New. A dazzling new collection of poems by a remarkably gifted poet whose vision penetrates to unravel expose and cauterize the stereotypes in a uniquely individualistic style. Rejecting formalism of elites these verses appear disarmingly simple direct but too often profound and significantly complex to communicate. Without the danger of stunning nostalgia there is resistance and reflection and a discernible sociopolitical consciousness besides a regular reproach of the self whose seemingly endless search for belonging meaning and sanity collides with a disjointed base absurd and insensitive world. Tender confessional joyous painful disturbing rebellious and provocative the poems in this volume celebrate humanity and womanhood in all its complexities. 144 pp.…

Paperback. Condizione: As New. New. Contents Introduction. 1. Understanding India's Pakistan's and China's Nuclear programmes. 2. Nuclear risks in South Asia. 3. Nuclear risk reduction measures in South Asia. 4. Problems and prospects. 5. Key findings and future possibilities. Bibliography. The prospect of a Nuclear War in South Asia has drawn global attention and concern. This book studies nuclear risks in the Indo Pakistani and Sino Indian contexts and suggests a wide range of measures by which India Pakistan and China could reduce nuclear dangers in South Asia. The author argues that there is a direct link between a war or a near war situation and nuclear risks. If the India Pakistan or the Sino Indian relationships take a downward turn three nuclear risks could raise their ugly heads. They include the intentional use of nuclear weapons accidental use of nuclear weapons and unauthorized use of nuclear weapons. This book shines a powerful light on the possibility of each of these three nuclear risks in detail. Choudhury suggests that improvement in bilateral relations and nuclear risk reduction are organically linked and in view of the prevailing suspicion mistrust and animosity among these three countries it would be best for India Pakistan and China to concentrate first on measures that can be implemented without requiring any significant changes in their current security policies. If these measures were implemented they could lay the foundation for more significant measures at a later stage. The only full length study and a timely epilogue of latest nuclear dialogues between India and Pakistan Nuclear Risk Reduction Measures in South Asia will be a standard reference not only for political scientists and strategic analysts but also for policy makers diplomats journalists defence personnel and the informed general reader. 124 pp.…

Paperback. Condizione: As New. New. Contents Preface. 1. Ripeness and India Pakistan conflicts in search of a framework. 2. Ripeness theory and India Pakistan conflicts. 3. The peace process in 2003 2004 signs of ripeness. 4. Indo Pak ripeness irritants and inducements. 5. Towards ripeness conclusions and recommendations. Appendices. Bibliography. This volume looks at the Indo Pak conflicts and the recent peace process through the prism of various ripeness theories especially William Zartman's when the parties engaged in the conflict realize that a stalemate is reached which is hurting they look towards reaching a compromise. Has the Indo Pak conflict reached the mutually hurting stalemate stage. What made general Musharraf adopt a political approach towards India after initiating a military confrontation in Kargil. Why did the Vajpayee Government decide to change its policy towards Pakistan after a year long confrontation in 2002. Has there been a realization that the confrontational policy/military option had failed. Or was it due to external pressure from the international community led by the US. Numerous changes have been taking place inside Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian Government has organized a successful election for the state legislative assembly. The new state government in J&K has initiated a healing touch policy which is yet to make changes at the ground level. The Hurriyat stands vertically divided and the armed non state actors including the militant and jihadi organizations have their own objectives. The bus service between the two Kashmirs has started and is welcomed by people despite opposition from a section of militants and separatists. Is the Kashmir conflict finally ripe to resolve. The book also looks into certain preconditions essential to make the conditions ripe and suggest measures that would initiate a process towards a final compromise between India and Pakistan. 118 pp.…

Paperback. Condizione: As New. Reprint. Contents Preface. 1. The priest and the queen a study in the rituals of the Asvamedha. 2. The king and the dice a study in the rituals of the Rajasuya. 3. Food and drink a study in the rituals of the Vajapeya. 4. The twice born a study in the rituals of tribal initiation. 5. Sacred and accursed a study in the menstrual rites of ancient India. 6. Earth and woman a study in the cults and rituals of fertility. 7. Death and resurrection a study in the rituals of Diwali and Holi. 8. Hook swinging a study in some popular cults and rituals of Bengal. Bibliography. Index. The first edition of this work evoked great scholarly interest and was acclaimed as a significant departure from the traditional type of indological research thus initiating a new line of historical enquiry. Dr. N.N. Bhattacharyya whose contribution to ancient Indian history and civilization is widely respected holds that the beliefs and ideals of different civilizations are formulated in their rituals more explicitly than in any other cultural trait which gives the study of ritualism a greater historical significance. For this reason the study of rituals should not be restricted to classifying their contents only. While their geographical and historical distribution should be delineated it is equally necessary to take into account their basic purpose. This would help reveal the actual social set up in which they were originally evolved. In this revised and enlarged edition the author has demonstrated that all Indian rituals ancient medieval or modern are based on certain well defined principles which are again inter related to each other. He has tried to discover these principles after a careful analysis of the ingredients of various rituals. The formulations made in the earlier edition have been critically re examined and the basic conclusions substantiated by fresh evidence from a variety of sources. 305 pp.…

Hardbound. Condizione: As New. New. Contents 1. Introduction. 2. Maulana Daud and his Candayan. 3. Structure of the Indo Sufi Masnavi. 4. The Sufi content of the Indo Islamic Masnavi. 5. Two episodes from Candayan interpretation and exegesis. 6. Candayan Indo Sufi allegory or Premakhyan. Bibliography. Index. Candayan is the pioneer work in a series of Sufi love narratives the Masnavis composed in India. The Indo Sufi Masnavi genre continued to flourish for over 500 years resulting in a substantial volume of very rich literature. Candayan also served as a model for subsequent Masnavis such as Kutuban's Mrgavati and Jayasi's Padmavat. In the Mahakoshal region of Madhya Pradesh Canaini a pastoral folk tale also known as Lorikayan was very popular. Maulana Daud based his Candayan on this oral epic. Lorik lives in Govar a town on the banks of the Ganges river with his wife Maina. One day he catches a glimpse of Canda the princess of Govar and falls in love with her. Canda also loves Lorik and both elope to be able to live together. After many adventures Lorik and Canda return to Govar to live with Lorik's family. Until recently it was believed that the Sufi love narratives of India were sub standard works not quite representative of the Indian morals and did not meet the Indian literary standards. Consequently for years the Hindi Masnavi literature remained neglected. This study opens a window into the true nature of the Masnavi and invites the reader to take a new look at the Indo Sufi Masnavi genre and determine its rightful place in the history of Hindi literature. 170 pp. …
