The Barbary Slaves is the sometimes shocking, sometimes horrifying, always fascincating account of this chapter of European and African History. As author Stephen Chissold reminds us, the piracy of the Barbary states and the ensuing retaliation by the European states was one more battle in the ancient struggle between the Cross and the Crescent.
