Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. This is "Haydn, His Life and times" by Neil Butterworth. The book was published in England, in 1978, by Midas in an oversize paperback format. This is the Second Printing. the following is excerpted from the book's cover write-up: " Franz Joseph Haydn, one of the great creative artists of the 18th century, was born in 1732. From humble beginnings he rose to take his place among the most enlightened and celebrated men of Europe.By the year of his death in 1809, he was the acknowledged master of the age, and a renowned symphonist whose visits to London in the 1790s were the talk of the town. His music provided the foundation of the classical era, influencing countless musicians in successive generations, not least Mozart and Beethoven. Today its immediacy and originality is as fresh in impact as when it was first conceived. In this illustrated biography, Neil Butterworth traces the rise of Haydn from his early years, through his long and fruitful association with the Esterházy family, to his death in Vienna during the Napoleonic invasion. Use is made of contemporary reports and reminiscences, while Haydn's own letters and diaries lend additional authenticity to the narrative. The illustrations (all being halftone monochromes) are mainly from contemporary engravings and paintings of the 18th and 19th centuries. There are also facsimiles reproductions of some of Haydn's manuscripts." The book is now Out of Print.
