From humble beginnings he rose to take his place among the most enlightened and celebrated men of Europe.By the year of his death in 1809, he was the acknowledged master of the age, and a renowned symphonist whose visits to London in the 1790s were the talk of the town. His music provided the foundation of the classical era, influencing countless musicians in successive generations, not least Mozart and Beethoven.
