Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. Slight bumping of corners. Light soiling of book block. Very faint scratches on covers due to shelf wear. Hazel Rowley's biography is a magnificent, heart-breaking account of Christina Stead's pursuit of her literary vision despite great personal cost. Insightful and dramatic, sympathetic and probing, in the words of one reviewer it 'simply has to be read'.

Colour illustrated dust jacket. The book has no damage whatsoever. The letters, written to people who had left Melbourne but were interested in its progress, describe all kinds of social and political developments Victoria. When the recipients were friends or family members, Graham's comments develop a delightfully gossipy, personal tone. Historian Paul de Serville describes the correspondence as "a social history in miniature of Melbourne and the country districts written by an insider". The letters cover the period from 1854 to 1864, and follow on directly from those previously published in Pioneer Merchant. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Please refer to accompanying picture (s). Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. Various (illustratore). First Edition. 600 g; XII, 248 pages, last page blank, includes endnotes, bibliography, index. Illustrated with political cartoons, and black-and-white photographs. Illustrated dust jacket. Charles Kingston was a leading player in Australia's Federation. He became Premier of South Australia in 1893 yet cared little for the norms of the polite, colonial society of the late 19th century Adelaide and, together with his wife Lucy, was ostracised accordingly. He was accused of adultery and subsequently adopted an illegitimate child; he challenged a political opponent to duel; yet he introduced radical and progressive legislation on industrial conciliation and arbitration, on the creation of the State Bank of South Australia, and on trade and tariff reforms. Thanks to him South Australia led the world on the enfranchisement of women. And Kingston's commitment and contribution to the cause and creation of Australian federalism was beyond question. -- front fold over blurb Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. Photographic and Facsimile (illustratore). First Edition. 650 g; XIV, 280 pages, last three pages blank, includes 12 pages of black-and-white photographs and facsimiles of letters, family trees, conversion tables, index. Photographic illustrated dustwrapper. The book has no damage. The letters Walter and Mary Richardson wrote to each other between 1854 and 1877 depict, with often surprising frankness, a loving relationship between a man and a woman was both mutual and enduring. Aspects of their relationship were used in their daughter's classic trilogy The Fortunes of Richard Mahony. Henry Handel Richardson and her later biographers, however, tended to focus more on the man and on the woman. Certainly, many more letters from Walter survive, and Mary's letters are much more difficult to read in the original. However, they reveal her to be at least Walter's equal in passion and devotion. -- front fold over blurb Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Please refer to accompanying picture (s). Condizione: Very Good. Photographic & Illustrations (illustratore). First Edition. Notes, acknowledgements and index. The text is illustrated with colour photography and reproductions of artwork. Photographic paperback binding (wraparound) with ochre, blue and black coloured titles to the front panel and ochre and blue coloured titles to the back strip. A retelling of Australian history that has largely been overlooked or forgotten; for example the sailors' walk from Ninety Mile Beach in Victoria to Sydney in 1797 after they had been shipwrecked and James Cook's meeting with Aboriginal people in Cooktown in 1770, to name but two. The author contends that, these and other histories " . lie on the edge of the continent and the edge of national consciousness. Retracing their steps, McKenna explores the central drama of Australian history: the encounter between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians  each altered irrevocably by the other  and offers a new understanding of the country and its people."  from rear panel blurb. A little creasing of the book corners with rubbing of the book edges and panels. Size: Trade Paperback. [10], XI - XX, 250, [2] pages, Please refer to accompanying picture (s).
