[From the preface] Mingei International Museum of World Folk Art was conceived and dedicated to furthering the understanding of the arts of the people from all parts of the world. It is a place where essential arts of daily life may speak for themselves. They reflect the character of their cultures and individuals who made them in a universal language of line, form, and color. Thus, Rites of Passage: Ceremonial Textiles of the Indonesian Archipelago from the collection of Mary Hunt Kahlenberg has been selected as our fourth exhibition in this first year of our new museum. It is also our first exhibition to travel throughout the United States. In order to develop exhibitions of broad universal appeal, it is our policy to utilize both museum and private collections of members and friends of the museum. We are fortunate to have as guest curator of this exhibition, one of our charter members, Mary Hunt Kahlenberg, author of Textile Traditions of Indonesia and Walk in Beauty, The Navajo and Their Blankets. We are grateful for her rare expertise. We thank her for her exquisite selection and design of this exhibition which carries through her exhibition proposal. Rites of Passage: The symbolic Textiles of Indonesia is a striking exhibition of 60 textiles from the Indonesian Archipelago, the home of one of the most sumptuous and original textile traditions. For Indonesians, the art of weaving - the intercrossing of the warp and the weft symbolizes the structure of the cosmos; the warp threads fastened between the ends of the loom represent the predestined elements of life; the weft passing back and forth and in and out denotes life's variables. Indonesian life is punctuated by ceremonies connected to the view of life as a series of inevitable stages, including birth, puberty, marriage, and death.
