The volume concentrates on fourteen of Maillart's major works, tracing the development of his ideas in reinforced concrete from the Zuoz Bridge of 1901 to the Lachen Bridge of 1940. Billington analyses these structures on engineering criteria and advances the argument that structure itself offers a fertile source of new forms for engineering and architecture. Where earlier accounts by Sigfried Giedion and Max Bill relied on black-and-white photographs taken in the 1930s, Maillart's Swiss bridges and industrial buildings were rephotographed in colour under the author's supervision for this edition.
