It purports to examine whether ideological assumptions colour organizational structure of the parties. The author brings out how var…ious parties are based on a 'Kept' crade which has no relationship to the ideological image a party presents before the public. Parties have a way, a common way, a universal way of organizing themselves. A party oranization can be organized only as an organization. The study also discovers that there is a reciprocal or mutually re-inforcing relationship between commitment to politics (as an advocation) and commitment to ideology. Those who devoted more time to politics were also those who appeared to be more committed to their party ideology. Its data also indicate a conclusion which is different from Weiner's or Brass's organizational cohesiveness and is more intimately related to ideology than to leadership. The generalisations in this work are made not on the basis of conversations with a few available individuals but on the basis of data gathered through a carefully structured questionnarie administered commonly to the members of all the political parties under study of various levels from grass-roots above. Needless to add the study has made a significant contribution to Political Science literature in the area of Indian party system.

Index.…The dominant fertility research agenda stresses the socio economic perspective of the effects of socio economic structural factors on fertility decline. A large number of studies based upon correlation and regression analyses on fertility and on children's educational attainments have been carried out on a wide variety of the cross sectional data from both economic and sociological points of view. An important implication of these theories is the emergence of a hypothesised negative quantity quality trade off which maintains that quantity and quality of children would interact because parents desire approximately equal level of quality for each of their children. However despite a variety of theoretical and empirical formulations on the subject household fertility and children's schooling remain perplexing issues. It is therefore imperative that micro demographic studies on the diverse socio economic cultural groups are undertaken in order to further enrich knowledge in this area. It is with this view that efforts are made in this study to identify the socio economic factors which influence the household fertility behaviour and household demand for children's education. Attempts have also been made to find out interrelationship if any between fertility and children's education in the context of a developing tribal society. 146 pp.

In recent times plants havi…ng medicinal values have attracted enormous attention because of two reasons first for the rationale of biological diversity and second because of economic contemplation. Concern regarding the diversity of plant species has become imperative as loss of forests particularly in the Eastern Himalayan region many cause extinction of many valuable medicinal plant species for ever. The tribal communities having vast indigenous knowledge system regarding the medicinal values of various plants are also used to practice Jhum Cultivation that causes deforestation and hence extinction of a large number of plant species. Then why they continue to practice Jhum Cultivation. Is this mode of cultivation more profitable. What is the rate of return from the cultivation of medicinal plants. Is farming of medicinal plants an alternative to Jhum cultivation. This book finds that for sustainable development agricultural sustainability is required and Jhum or shifting cultivation is no more sustainable from the ecological point of view as Jhum cycle in recent times has reduced drastically. Calculating benefits and costs of medicinal plants cultivation as well as that of Jhum we observe that private benefit cost ratio of the former type of farming is higher than the latter and when social costs and benefits are included with private costs and benefits we estimate much higher benefit cost ratio of medicinal plants than Jhum Cultivation. 150 pp.
