Paperback. Condizione: Good. In the summer of 1943, after two years of total war on the Eastern Front, the Germans were ready to meet the Soviets on the decisive battlefield. The greatest tank battle of all time proved to be the beginning of the end for the Third Reich. The elite panzer formations were decimated and would never again regain their former strength. Nothing could turn the fortunes of the war for the Axis and their Soviet flood was not to be stopped until the ruins of Berlin.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. The Grumman F8F Bearcat represents the pinnacle of US carrier-borne piston-engine fighter design. Marrying a compact, lightweight airframe with a powerful 18-cylinder Pratt & Whitney Double Wasp radial engine churning out more than 2,000 hp produced an aircraft intended to be an interceptor that could operate from the smallest escort carriers. Although the Bearcat prototype first took to the air in August 1944, and the first squadron equipped with the new fighters was operational in May 1945, WI ended before the Bearcat saw combat. The type ultimately saw combat in the First Indochina War.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. The North American B-25 Mitchell was one of the premier US warplanes of WI. It gained immortality early in the US involvement in the war when a small group of B-25Bs under Lt Col. Jimmy Doolittle took off from the deck of the US Hornet and executed a surprise attack on military targets on the Japanese island of Honshu. Subsequently, Mitchells saw service in every theater of war, doing duty as tactical bombers, coastal patrol aircraft, photo-reconnaissance and photo-mapping planes, and, when fitted with additional guns and rockets, superb ground- and shipping-attack platforms. The US supplied B-25s to the British Royal Air Force and to the Soviet Union, which flew them against the Nazis on the Eastern Front. The career of the Mitchell is covered from the experimental NA-40 prototype to the final production B-25J model. US Marine Corps PBJ versions are also chronicled. Eight all-new pages of photos and information fill out this latest edition.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. During the summer the exhausted British forces in charge of conducting the war in the North African desert were in retreat across all sectors, unable to oppose the Rommel phenomenon. The last obstacle on the road to Alexandria was the British 8th Army, which had finally halted at the isolated El Alamein railroad station after a long, bitter retreat. At this insignificant spot, the disciplined British troops and their battle-hardened allies, under General Bernard Law Montgomery, prepared to make a final stand. Rommel launched a violent assault, but was unable to overcome his opponents' stubborn defense. After a bloody 12-day battle, the Africakorps was forced to retreat. The soon-to-be-legendary 8th Army had smashed German dreams of dominating North Africa.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. The Iowa-class battleships were America's--and the world's--last active battleships, serving as recently as 1995. Back in the World War I era, six of the class were ordered, and four completed: Iowa, New Jersey, Missouri and Wisconsin. The Missouri rose to fame as the site of the Japanese surrender ending WI. Each armed with nine 16-inch rifles able to hurl 2,700-lb shells more than 23 miles, the Iowas were capable of combating formidable sea-going foes. In actuality, however, their huge main guns were used instead to shell enemy land positions during WI, Korea, Vietnam, and the Gulf War. In later years their original arrays of 16-inch and five-inch guns were augmented with missiles, including the Harpoon as well as the Tomahawk cruise missiles. Explore the decks and depths of these mighty warships, once home to thousands of sailors, 88 pages packed with over 270 color photos, carefully chosen to show the subtle differences between these four near-identical ships.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. The M3 Medium Tank was designed as an interim answer to European battlefield conditions at the start of WI. The tank was required to have heavier armor and a gun twice the size of the M2A1. Plans needed to be ready in 60 days. The solution was the M3's unconventional design, which features a 75mm main gun mounted in a sponson on the right front of the hull. The British dubbed their version General Grant and named the US Army version General Lee.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. The US Army began accepting deliveries of the M42 in October 1952, and when production ended in 1959, approximately 3,700 units had been delivered. By the late 1960s, the Duster's limits seemed to have been reached. The lack of a radar tracking system meant the M42 was a fair weather shooter against low, slow targets; it just could not keep pace with the new generation of Soviet jet aircraft. As US involvement in Vietnam increased, three battalions of Dusters were sent to South Vietnam, initially for anti-aircraft duties, but with clear skies over the South, the M42 was usefully employed as convoy escort, perimeter and base security, and direct-fire support.…
