Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - One of the most original and powerful scholarly works written on gender and women's power to choose This book addresses a topic that until recently had been underexplored: women who voluntarily forgo having and raising children. Grounded in a discourse approach, it examines reproductive decision-making in the context of pronatalist discourses, such as 'maternal instinct', 'biological clock' and 'having it all', that encourage procreation in some while discouraging it in others. To contextualize pronatalism sociohistorically, the book also examines the relationship between pro- and anti-natalist discourses that emerged during the 20th-century eugenics movement in the United States, especially its promotion of white middle-class women's procreation while discouraging, or preventing, poor immigrant women and women of color from reproducing. Other topics include online communities devoted to childfreedom, 20th- and 21st-century women authors who wrote about their decision not to procreate, responses of academic women in the field of applied linguistics to questions about their childlessness, and a personal narrative of the author's childlessness. The author calls for solidarity between mothers and 'nothers' (her term for childless women) to defy the policing of women's bodies worldwide.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Highly topical work raising uncomfortable questions about power, inequality, inclusion, representation and linguistic justice in contemporary global deaf spaces International Sign (IS) is widely relied upon as a lingua franca of sign languages in international contexts, yet it remains one of the most debated and misunderstood forms of signed communication. Through extensive multinational ethnographic fieldwork, this book explores the paradox of IS: it often works best when it remains open and fluid, yet it becomes visible, teachable, interpretable and institutionally useful only through processes that seek to define it. Foregrounding deaf perspectives on language use, the book examines key dynamics of IS and traces how these are organised, evaluated and contested across informal and institutional settings. It includes visual vignettes, single-sign illustrations and links to ethnographic films allowing readers to engage with multimodal data in context and providing material for teaching and further research. This book will be of particular interest to researchers and students in sign linguistics, deaf studies, interpreting studies, sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology as well as professionals working in deaf organisations, sign language interpreting, policy and media contexts. This book is open access under a CC BY NC ND licence.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Over the past six decades, the field of teaching modern foreign languages to young learners has come a long way, from the early surmises about the advantages of a young start to today's widespread integration of foreign languages into curricula in public and private schools. The chapters in this book bring together internationally renowned researchers who have been vocal in establishing early language teaching and learning as an independent area of research and novice voices who represent a new generation of devoted researchers to present a state-of-the-art volume on the topic. The authors address key questions about young learner second/foreign language (L2/FL) development, methodological issues when conducting research with young learners, L2/FL teaching pedagogy, language education policy, technology enhanced learning and assessment. Together, the chapters capture the reality of early FL development in the context of a globalized world and will be of great interest to researchers and postgraduate students of SLA and Applied Linguistics, specifically in the field of early language development and teaching languages to young learners.…
