Over h…is long career, he made well over 2,000 printed images, focusing on the intaglio techniques of etching, engraving, drypoint and aquatint, as well as on lithography and linoleum cut. This publication, published to accompany an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, explores Picasso's creative process in printmaking starting in the early years of the twentieth century with his Blue and Rose periods, and extending up to the last years of his life. The original edition of American Photographs was a carefully prepared letterpress production, published by The Museum of Modern Art in 1938 to accompany an exhibition of photographs by Evans that captured scenes of America in the early 1930s. As noted on the jacket of the first edition, Evans, "photographing in New England or Louisiana, watching a Cuban political funeral or a Mississippi flood, working cautiously so as to disturb nothing in the normal atmosphere of the average place, can be considered a kind of disembodied, burrowing eye, a conspirator against time and its hammers." This seventy-fifth anniversary edition of American Photographs, made with new reproductions, recreates the original 1938 edition as closely as possible to make the landmark publication available for a new generation. American Photographs has fallen out of print for long periods of time since it was first published, and even subsequent editions--two of which altered the design and typography of the book in small but significant ways--are often available only at libraries and rare bookstores. This version, like the fiftieth-anniversary edition produced by the Museum in 1988, captures the look and feel of the very first edition with the aid of new digital technologies.Walker Evans (1903-1975) took up photography upon his return to New York in 1927, following a year in Paris when his aspiration to become a writer withered in the shadow of Fitzgerald, Hemingway and Joyce. In 1935, Evans was commissioned by the Farm Security Administration to photograph the effects of the Great Depression in the Southeast. During this time he took many of the photographs that appeared in his collaboration with James Agee, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men (1941), a book which has become a defining document of that era. Evans joined the staff of Time magazine in 1945 and shortly thereafter became an editor at Fortune, where he stayed for the next two decades. In 1964, he became a professor at the Yale University School of Art, where he taught until his death in 1975.

The artist acquires these fragments, once commonly cherished in Brazilian households, by scouting the secondhand stores, flea markets and dumpsters of Rio de Janeiro. Bradley (born 1975) has explored the way cultural icons are so imbued with myth that they become a mirror image (doppelgänger) of the self. Earlier works in the series include faked tribute videos in which Bradley's doppelganger, Ben Brock, performs as late musicians Ian Curtis, Michael Jackson and Kurt Cobain. These final two works in the series focus on another of Bradley's obsessions: the actor River Phoenix. The installations were produced in collaboration with Academy Award-nominated cinematographer and filmmaker Ed Lachman, director of photography for the film, Dark Blood, an unreleased 1993 film starring Phoenix that was in production at the time of the actor's death. The video installations Shadow (2010) and Dead Ringer (2011) are based on the film, and the latter features an appearance by Bradley himself.

A highly cosmopolitan artist, Rivera had spent many years in Europe before returning to Mexico in 1921, and in 1927 he traveled to the Soviet Union where he met Alfred Barr, the soon-to-be founding director of The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Rivera's artistic celebrity benefitted from major commissions in the United States, including murals for the Pacific Stock Exchange, the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, MoMA and the Detroit Institute of Arts. Always responsive to surrounding space, Sze's rhizomatic works are sometimes described as installation rather than sculpture, but an equally close or closer relationship occurs with drawing, the focus of the Asia Society Museum's major Sze exhibition opening in December 2011, and this new hardcover volume published for the occasion. Infinite Line is the first publication to address the relationship of Sze's sculpture to drawing, and to explore the influence of East Asian artistic traditions on her sensibility. "How do you make a sculpture that acts like a drawing?" Sze asks with these works. "How do you make a drawing that acts like a sculpture?" Born in 1969 in Boston, Massachusetts, Sarah Sze was initially trained in architecture. She received a BA from Yale University (1991) and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts (1997). Sze has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions including at the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Carnegie Museum of Art, and in the 48th Venice Bienniale and the 2009 Biennale de Lyon. She was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2003. Currently based in New York, she teaches at Columbia University School of the Arts.
