Paperback, very good condition, no inscriptions, minor edge/shelf wear. 272 pages Illustrations 26 x 23 centimetres More Than Water: The Story of lake Hood shows how an ambitious dream became reality. It is an inspirational account of the 15-year journey taken by a community determined to build a lake in the arid plains of mid-Canterbury. More Than Water is more than an account of how a world-class recreational facilty was created out of brush-covered farmland. it is a story of how, through hard work, positive thinking and sheer determination, ordinary New Zealanders can triumph. At no point did this group think, 'Can we do this?', but rather, 'How can we do this?' Their vision and persistence, their determination to turn set-backs into success, show us that we can all achieve our goals if our belief in them is strong enough. Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Beyond Cook's Gardens A Writer's Journey By Norman Harris. Publisher: Last Side Publishing Ltd, Hamilton, NZ, 2010, First Edition. Very good softback, no inscriptions, minor sedge-wear. The journey started on a fabulous night at Cook's Garden, Wanganui, where a youthful Norman Harris from the New Zealand Herald was the only national media witness to Peter Snell's world-record mile. That launched a wave of exciting writing, typically described by reviewers as "fresh" or "vivid". Abroad, the young journalist was acclaimed for "perhaps the finest writing on athletics in the English language". But Beyond Cook's Gardens goes beyond athletics. Along the journey we meet some surprising characters - from Jack Nicklaus to Kiri Te Kanawa, from Glenn Turner to Benjamin Britten. We learn of threats and blackmail by sports officials in New Zealand; and assualt by a notorious All Black; a cloak-and-dagger encounter in Moscow; and the coining of a brand new word, Jogger. Through many years in the UK, the writer remained close to New Zealand sport, and recently produced "Scottie", an acclaimed drama about a maverick athlete. But wherever his stories are set, the telling always seems to come from a fresh, intriguing angle. So it is now in a memoir notable for its wry humour, a sense of humanity and, above all, a fascination with the magic of words. All books are sent free by courier postage within New Zealand. Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. A Bridge Over: The Story of John Masters, Veteran Fighter. by Marriott, Allan. Paperback, very good condition bumped spine. 224 pages. Published by Nationwide Books, 2010 ISBN: 0473166690. illustrations. In 1965, John Milbanke Masters was awarded the Military Cross for action in Borneo, for which he was made a life member of the Gurkhas. In 2002 he was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit. Between these awards recognising gallantry and chivalry, John was the last New Zealand commander of 161 Battery in Vietnam. He brought the troops home in 1971 to mixed feelings across the country. Returning soldiers were denied entry to RSAs. Isolated, some punished themselves and withdrew from society, others developed unexpected illnesses and cancers. Reports sponsored by New Zealand governments denied that soldiers had been in contact with chemical herbicides such as Agent Orange. For nearly 40 years, Vietnam veterans struggled for recognition. Unknowingly, John had also brought home the map that eventually proved the extent to which New Zealand soldiers in Vietnam were in contact with chemical herbicides. John backed his fellow Vietnam veterans all the way through select committees to the New Zealand parliament and the eventual Crown apology in 2008. John's intimate and enthralling story is an insight into the challenges of family and leadership both inside and outside soldiering, his fight for veterans and for justice, and his personal fight against the cancer that affected so many of his comrades. Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. Straight Through from London. The Antipodes and Bounty Islands, New Zealand BY Rowley Taylor. Publisher: Heritage Expeditions, New Zealand, 2006. First Edition. Very good softback, no owner inscriptions, some shelf-wear to covers, slight fading to spine, a little creasing, minor marks. If a hole could be dug from London straight down through the centre of the earth, one would eventually emerge close to the small, remote Antipodes Islands in the New Zealand sub-antarctic. Straight Through From London vividly details the history and natural history of the Antipodes and their tiny neighbours, the Bounty Islands. With their undisturbed vegetation and a flourishing wildlife, the islands are truly unique, and totally protected as National Nature Reserves on the World Heritage List. 415 pages with photos and maps. All books are sent free by courier postage within New Zealand. ALL PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK.…
