Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. x+287 pages with index. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/4") bound in original publisher's quarter black paper with silver lettering to spine in original jacket. First edition. "Breaking Windows" tells the story of the battle for the soul of Microsoft that raged inside the company from 1997 to 2000 and continues to reverberate today. Drawing on hundreds of e-mails among Microsoft executives, trial testimony, and exclusive interviews with Gates and his chief lieutenants, "Wall Street Journal" reporter David Bank reveals the bitter maneuvering between what he calls Microsoft s "Windows hawks" and its "Internet doves." On one side were the fierce defenders of the hegemony of Windows, on the other those who championed a new way of doing business based on the Internet s "open standards." The reformers wanted to break free from the legacy of Windows and dare to compete on the merits of their software. Condition: Corners gently bumped else a near fine copy in like jacket.

Softcover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. This entertaining and thorough examination of operetta remains the only complete, richly-illustrated history available of a delightful form of musical theater which has enraptured audiences around the world for over a century. Coming at a time of renewed enthusiasm for operetta, Richard Traubner's timely volume shakes the dust off many exciting pieces, while documenting the creation of the masterworks of the form, including Orphée aux Enfers, Die Fledermaus, H.M.S. Pinafore, The Merry Widow, The Desert Song, and White Horse Inn. It covers the careers of the major operetta composers and librettists--including Offenbach, Hervé, Strauss, Gilbert and Sullivan, Lehár, Coward, and Lerner and Loewe--the original productions of their works, the principal foreign versions, the famous revivals, and related aspects of public and critical reaction, as well as providing a chronicle of operetta's greatest theaters and most popular stars. Solid binding. Moderate edgewear on the boards. Moderate shelf wear. Please note the image in this listing is a stock photo and may not match the covers of the actual item. Book.

The Companion to Chaucer Studies arose out of present necessity: it has been devised to assist students when they confront the formidable mass of Chaucerian scholarship, and, in particular, to give those who have small library facilities some idea of the critical background which seems essential for an appreciation of Chaucer's poetry at any but a superficial level. It may also, perhaps, prove stimulating and useful to those already familiar with Chaucerian scholarship. - Preface. Some underlining Ex-Libris and is stamped as such. Solid binding. The King's Indian Defence is a common chess opening. It arises after the moves: 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 Black intends to follow up with 3.Bg7 and 4.d6 (the Grünfeld Defence arises when Black plays 3.d5 instead, and is considered a separate opening). White's major third move options are 3.Nc3, 3.Nf3 or 3.g3, with both the King's Indian and Grünfeld playable against these moves. The Encyclopaedia of Chess Openings classifies the King's Indian Defence under the codes E60 through E99. The King's Indian is a hypermodern opening, where Black deliberately allows White control of the centre with their pawns, with the view to subsequently challenge it. In the most critical lines of the King's Indian, White erects an imposing pawn centre with Nc3 followed by e4. Black stakes out their own claim to the centre with the Benoni-style .c5, or .e5. If White resolves the central pawn tension with d5, then Black follows with either .b5 and queenside play, or .f5 and an eventual kingside attack. Meanwhile, White attempts to expand on the opposite wing. The resulting unbalanced positions offer scope for both sides to play for a win. Condition: Corners bumped else near fine.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 2nd Edition. xiv+149 with diagrams and index. Quarto (10 1/4" x 6 3/4") bound in original publisher's pictorial boards.Second edition. This book has been revised and expanded to take account of the immense amount of serious competitive play in the decade since the first edition was completed in 1966. During this period the Petroff has gained a new supporter in the person of the former world champion Petrosian. Some commentators even attribute the loss of the title in 1969 to his failure to carry on playing the Petroff after it had brought him two comfortable draws late in the match against Spassky. Meanwhile, older supporters of the defence such as Smyslov and Bronstein have not lost faith in it. Even the former world title holder Karpov has adopted it occasionally. Condition: Corners and spine ends gently bumped, front end paper clipped else very good.
