Paperback. Condizione: As New. Unread and unopened! (Hard to say new when it's 32 years old). To compare the morals of the Old, with those of theNew Testament, would require an attentive study of the former, a search through all its books for its precepts, and through all its history for its practices, and the principles they prove. As commentaries, too, on these, the philosophy of the Hebrews must be inquired into, their Mishna, their Gemara, Cabbala, Jezirah, Sohar, Cosri, and their Talmud, must be examined and understood, in order to do them full justice. Brucker, it would seem, has gone deeply into these repositories of their ethics, and Enfield, his epitomizer, concludes in these words: "Ethics were so little understood among the Jews that in their whole compilation called the Talmud, there is only one treatise on moral subjects . What a wretched depravity of sentiment and manners must have prevailed, before such corrupt maxims could have obtained credit! It is impossible to collect from these writings a consistent series of moral doctrine.'' It was the reformation of this "wretched depravity" of morals which Jesus undertook. In extracting the pure principle which he taught, we should have to strip off the artificial vestments in which they have been muffled by the priests, who have travested them into various forms, as instruments of riches and power to themselves.

Libro Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: As New. First Edition. Unread and unopened! (Hard to list as 'New' when it's 31 years old). 2 tiny spots on top outer edges. Recounts one of the 20th century's strangest and most stirring sea adventures -- the successful round-the-globe expedition of the World War I German commerce raider and minelayer Wolf. Breaking the Allied blockade, and disguised as a merchant ship, it sank 135,000 tons of Allied shipping. No German surface raider was more successful than the auxiliary cruiser Wolf. The unimposing steamer was armed with seven 5.9 guns and four torpedo tubes -- all ingeniously camouflaged. For 15 months it fought a brilliant campaign, capturing more than two dozen enemy steamers, taking prisoner their experienced crews, then sending their ships to the bottom -- destroying altogether 135,000 tons of enemy shipping. During that time the raider shunned all ports, seizing fuel and food from the ships it took on the high seas, slipping through heavily patrolled waters again and again to score victories and spread panic from New Zealand to Brazil. Her story, as told by an Australian radio operator who spent nine months as a captive on board the Wolf, is a tale of seamanship, courage and chivalry unique in the annals of warfare. Unparalleled wartime adventure on the high seas! ISBN 0-939482-36-3. Hardcover; 270 pp.

Hardcover. Condizione: As New. Unread and unopened! Here is the inside story of four of the most colossal military clashes in history, by Soviet Russia's greatest World War II commander. Marshal Zhukov tells how he directed the Red Army's bitter last-ditch defense of Moscow, masterminded the encirclement and defeat of some 600,000 German troops at Stalingrad, smashed the last great German counteroffensive of Kursk-Orel in history's mightiest tank battle, and led the awesome, climactic assault on Berlin. Zhukov also provides intimate detail of Kremlin discussions behind critical military decisions, and reveals the behind-the-scenes story of disputes and controversy between himself and Soviet dictator Stalin. Cornelius Ryan, bestselling author of The Longest Day, wrote of this book: "Probably the single most important memoir by a Russian military leader to reach the general public in the West. It adds to the canvas -- and the color Zhukov uses is blood red!" Must reading for anyone who is seriously interested in World War II. With helpful detail maps, and valuable introduction and explanatory notes by Harrison E. Salisbury. Hardcover; 304 pp; Dust jacket, maps, index.
