The years before and after the Edict of Emancipation were times of extraordinary political activity in Russia. They saw the birth of a revolutionary movement drawing from both conservative and radical, both Slavophile and Westernizing sources, that repeatedly challenged the authority of Russia's rulers and insisted in one way or another on the primacy of the Russian people. Socialism, populism, and radicalism, once mere topics of intellectual discussion, became social forces of transforming power. To a very great extent, these were developments brought about by young people~not only students, but youthful teachers, activists, scholars, and intellectuals. In a major study of this famous period, Abbott Gleason offers an important new interpretation of the genesis of Russian radicalism, and at the same time relates the 1860s to our own epoch. Stressing the relatedness of radical and reactionary doctrines, he explores the reasons why people held the ideas they did, and the psychology of this most remarkable of political generations. "With every year that passes," Professor Gleason writes, "it becomes more difficult to regard the state that issued from the Revolution as even ambiguously 'progressive,' as that term used to be employed. This perspective, and the inevitable ironies that accompany it, are built into this book. . . . But the ambiguities of my attitude have certainly not diminished my admiration for the nineteenth~century Russian intelligentsia. Those Russian intellectuals remain, for me, about the most remarkable, many~sided, and congenial people that I have heard or read about. Their story is still, for me, an inspirational story.".

His main theme in Against the Current is the importance in the history of thought of dissenters whose ideas still challenge conventional wisdom; Machiavelli, Vico, Montesquieu, Hamann, Herzen, and Georges Sorel are central examples. He is especially concerned with the phenomenon of originality, with the unpredictable capacity of men with exceptional minds to battle against the current of their times and contribute something entirely new to our intellectual heritage. This book is a celebration of some of the most original and influential, misunderstood, or neglected thinkers of the Western world. It is essential reading for anyone responsive to the force of ideas in history. "Berlin expounds the ideas of half~forgotten thinkers with luminous clarity and imaginative empathy . [These essays] are exhilarating to read." ~The Observer.

It was glowing down near the root, as if there were a candle inside. He was mystified and leaned down to examine it. Inside the hollow bamboo was a tiny girl, no more than three inches tall! .". The Tale of the Shining Princess is the story of that tiny girl, Kaguya~hime. Written in the ninth or tenth century in Japan and as familiar there today" as the bamboo growing before us," this story tells of the gentlemen who come from far and wide to court the beautiful princess and of the impossible tasks she demands of them as proof of their devotion to her. Prince Ishizukuri is sent in quest of the begging~bowl of the Buddha; Prince Kuramochi has to fetch a jeweled branch from Paradise; the Minister of the Right Abe no Mimuraji must secure a robe of Chinese fire~rat fur; the Grand Counselor Otomo no Miyuki must bring back a five~colored jewel from a dragon's head; and the Middle Counselor Isonokami no Marotari has no less a task than to obtain the easy~birth charm of the swallows. When the Emperor himself pursues Kaguyahime, she mystifyingly rebuffs him. The princess' strange fate is finally revealed in this classic story that has the human insights of a fairy tale and the breathtaking quality of myth. Reproduced from an eighteenth~century Japanese book with exquisite paintings in watercolor, ink, gold, and silver, the illustrations in this edition are printed in five colors plus gold and silver. They capture Kaguya~hime's world of gold~speckled clouds, silver streams, and figures emerging from mounds of beautiful fabrics. Based on Donald Keene's translation of the story, this edition includes a note by him on the text and a commentary on the illustrations by Andrew Pekarik.
