They provide a unique bridge with the ancient world and can bring us into peculiarly close and intimate contact with life in the Roman world. Two thousand years ago there were perhaps eight million Jews, compared with fourteen million today. But within the Roman empire they constituted between six and nine percent of the population, and in its eastern, Greek~speaking provinces the percentage was perhaps as high as twenty. Given their highly distinctive beliefs and customs, so divergent from those of the Greeks and Romans, it was inevitable that they should exercise a dramatic and explosive effect on the course of events. We derive our civilization, it has been said, from Athens, Rome, and Jerusalem. The three cultures stood side by side with one another. In describing the triangular relationship among the Jews, the Romans, and the Greeks, Michael Grant treats one of the most significant themes in world history. His book embraces the period in which the Jewish religion assumed virtually its final form, and in which Jews launched their two heroic, but disastrous revolts against Roman rule. These were the only national uprisings of such magnitude that the Romans ever encountered; they had a profound effect on the land of Israel, where the Jews have only reasserted their independent control in modern times. This was, moreover, the time when Judaism gave birth to Christianity. Within a century after the death of Jesus, his followers had become completely independent of Judaism. Grant describes the process of separation and its fateful impact on both Jews and Christians. Throughout emerges a picture of Jewish learning and toughness, of Christian perseverance and devotion, and of the grandeur of the great multiracial Roman empire, beneath whose rule~and except in times of rebellion it was often a notably tolerant rule~these stirring and unique developments took place.
