Three weeks later witnesses identify Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti as the murderers. They were tried, convicted, and finally executed seven years later in what became the American legal affair of the century. For in the eyes of many, Sacco and Vanzetti were innocent scapegoats, framed, tried in a kangaroo court, and murdered because they were Italian anarchists. The case became a favorite cause of poets, playwrights, society matrons and college professors, and to this day, sixty years later, the belief in Sacco and Vanzetti's innocence is widely embraced and accepted.
