South Braintree, Massachusetts. Two gunmen shoot and kill a paymaster and a guard, stealing the payroll of a local shoe factory. Three weeks later witnesses identify Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti as the murderers. They were tried, convicted, and finally executed seven years later in what became the American legal affair of the century. For in the eyes of many, Sacco and Vanzetti were innocent scapegoats, framed, tried in a kangaroo court, and murdered because they were Italian anarchists. The case became a favorite cause of poets, playwrights, society matrons and college professors, and to this day, sixty years later, the belief in Sacco and Vanzetti's innocence is widely embraced and accepted. Francis Russell set out some twenty~five years ago to write the book that would prove conclusively the innocence of Sacco and Vanzetti, but in his research he found the evidence against them overwhelming. Instead, his book Tragedy in Dedham, which appeared in 1962, was one of the first direct challenges to the theory of their innocence; in it Russell asserted that Sacco was indeed guilty and Vanzetti innocent. Since then many other books have been written preserving the theory of their innocence, but no one has ever known with absolute certainty the truth of the case~no one, that is, but the accomplices to the crime, described by Russell in his book as "elderly people now, tenaciously prepared to carry the weight of their secret to the grave." Barring a sudden revelation by one of them, Russell concluded, the true story of the crime would never be known. Now, for the first time, new evidence has become available: the opened FBI files on the case, new ballistics tests on Sacco's pistol, private papers recently released. But most startling of all is the revelation from the son of one of Sacco's closet anarchist associates, a man who had kept the ancient Sicilian code of silence for sixty years, and whose son now feels compelled to tell the truth~a truth that settles definitely one of our century's most controversial disputes. Francis Russell retells the Sacco and Vanzetti story convincingly and with great narrative force, and in so doing paints a lively and colorful portrait of the Italian anarchist community around Boston in the 1920s, of an immigrant people of great political passion, and of the equally fascinating "keepers of the flame"~the scholars, politicians, teachers and writers who have kept the case of Sacco and Vanzetti alive in the years since their deaths.

A to Z listings. american history. biography. military history. american civil war. war between the states. history of the confederacy. abolition. slavery. ~ Historical Times Illustrated Encyclopedia of the Civil War is the most complete one~volume reference on the Civil War ever produced. More than 2,000 entries ranging in length from a few lines to several pages and arranged alphabetically ~ from "abatis" and "abolition" to "Zollicoffer" and "Zouave"~ cover every important aspect and individual of that momentous conflict. Military events, campaigns, and battles are thoroughly presented; but so, too, are political, economic, and social developments that occurred during the war. Particularly useful is the system of cross~referencing that indicates in each essay those names and terms which have their own entries. One of the highlights of the volume is the individual biographies, most of them accompanied by a photograph, not just of high~ranking military leaders, including all Confederate and Union general officers (except a few Union brigadiers who were never in the field), but also of some military persons of lesser rank who made significant contributions, along with political figures, correspondents and editors, artists and photographers, women, Indians, foreign soldiers, and partisans. In addition, there are entries on famous units, naval actions, events in the Trans~Mississippi theater, political parties, elec tions, congresses, draft riots, taxes, greenbacks, great newspapers both North and South, major railroads, Civil War medicine and ordnance, music, and much more. The result is a reference book that is not only immensely practical and useful but is also a pleasure to read or browse through.
