Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good+. First Edition. 567 Pages. Stated: First Edition. This price-clipped guidebook is a detailed review of American Wines including information on the winery, winemaker, a short history of the winery, distribution, and types of wines made. The book's dust jacket has two small repaired tears at the top of the spine, some minor wrinkling at the base of the spine, and the aforementioned price clip but otherwise it is in very good and clean shape. The interior book has some fading at the top of the front and rear covers, but outside of that small detriment, has no further visible detriments or any visible extraneous markings or distractions throughout the book and thus it has all of its printing and maps in a very well-preserved and enjoyable condition and the book's sewn-in bindings remain tight and therefore are sound. If you should order this heavy volume from us, it will be carefully wrapped up, then boxed and padded, and mailed with insurance right away to you, and will come with our genuine appreciation for your order. For orders outside of the continental USA, there may be extra postage requested due to the book's weight.

The book presents Dr. E. Fuller Torrey's cogent, meticulously researched examination of the negative impact on American thought and culture of Freud's theory that early childhood experiences, particularly those sexual in nature, are crucial determinants for personality development. Close analysis of Freud's theory has proven that there is virtually no scientific basis for it; in fact, childhood experiences are now known to be comparatively unimportant antecedents of personality. Yet the manipulation of the nature~nurture controversy by Freud and proponents of his theory confused our thinking about human behavior in this century, causing a wake of misperceptions and disastrous~yet inevitable~consequences. Freud's theory has seeped into almost all aspects of life in America, leaving its profound effects on everything from literature, drama, and pop culture to child rearing and our criminal justice system. Freudian Fraud chronicles how this theory gained initial recognition in the beginning of the century as part of the sexual revolution, then became attached to the forces of nurture in the nature~nurture debate, and finally evolved into a symbol of liberalism and humanism in the post~World War II period, inextricably linked to American liberal politics and the Democratic Party. In recounting the history of Freudian thought in America, Dr. E. Fuller Torrey examines several questions. Most importantly, why did Freud's theory spread so much more widely here than in any other country? How was the nature~nurture controversy essential to this spread? And how is the entire counseling and psychotherapy industry~"McFreud" in America~a logical outcome? In answering these questions, Freudian Fraud also probes the motivations of the well~known figures who have been instrumental in spreading Freudian thought into every corner of our lives, including individuals as diverse as Emma Goldman, Walter Lippman, Karl Menninger, Margaret Mead. Dr. Benjamin Spock, and John Bradshaw. The book closes with an assessment of Freud's theory and its effect on America. Some good has come out of Freud's theory~notably, psychotherapy, humanism, and knowledge of the unconscious. However, the adverse results of our wholehearted acceptance of Freudian thought~narcissism, irresponsibility, misallocated resources, and the denigration of women~are much greater. Given what we know, the perpetuation of the Freudian paradigm is a kind of fraud.".

"This edition was specially created in 1992 for Book Of The Month Club". 340p. b&w illustrations. bibliography. index. religion. theology. psychology. psychic phenomena. medieval history. history of christianity. history of france. ~ IN THIS BRILLIANT HISTORICAL NARRATIVE Aldous Huxley has explored one of the strangest episodes of history. Urbain Grandier, the vicar of Loudun, was a young man of great ability, but with a taste, unfortunate in a priest, for women and for making enemies. For years these enemies did their best to drive him out of Loudun, but without success. Their opportunity came at last when some Ursuline nuns succumbed to one of those epidemics of hysteria which are so apt to afflict ill~regulated convents. The good sisters were encouraged to believe that they were possessed by devils, and Grandier was then accused of having caused the devils to assail them. Cardinal Richelieu had his reasons for disliking the parson, and the case was made an affair of state, Grandier was tried, condemned as a sorcerer, and burned alive. But that did not put a stop to the possession. New exorcists were called in, chief among whom was the celebrated Jesuit mystic, Jean~Joseph Surin. Surin finally succeeded in expelling the demons who infested the Prioress, but succumbed in the process to the psychological infection, of which she had been the first and principal victim. The narrative in which he described his twenty years of lucid madness and the Prioress's account of her possession are psychological documents of extraordinary interest. The history of Loudun's devils runs the full gamut from the morally squalid to the heroic, from tragic sublimity to the grotesque, from the ugliest superstition to the highest spirituality. Mr. Huxley as told the story against a background of psychological and historical comment. The drama is made to unfold itself in the light, not only of the beliefs and sentiments of the period, but also of contemporary thought and perennial philosophy.
