The history of Arctic adventure is above all the story of the remarkable adventurers themselves. It brings to life the pious and ambitious Edward Parry; the ruthless and paranoid Robert Peary who claimed to reach the North Pole in 1909; Charles Francis Hall, an obscure printer who abruptly sold his business and, abandoning his wife and family, headed for a frozen world about which he knew virtually nothing; the flawed hero Sir John Franklin, a plodding naval officer who literally could not kill a fly but whose expedition was responsible for the deaths of more men than any other Arctic explorer's; and his formidable widow Jane Franklin, who forced the reluctant British government to embark on a far~reaching and costly search for her husband. Equally important are the native peoples, the Eskimos, without whom, according to Berton, Arctic exploration would not have been possible. Finally, what will surely generate controversy is Berton's discussion of the Cook~Peary expedition and his conclusion that neither explorer ever reached the Pole although both men went to great lengths to support their claims that they had done so.
