Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The opening shots of a great conflictThe German plan of attack in 1914 involved a giant 'hooking' movement commencing within Germany itself and then advancing through Luxembourg and neutral Belgium towards the Continental channel ports before arcing south-east to embrace the French heartland. France would be taken from the rear of Verdun on the River Meuse to Orleans on the Loire. Paris-caught squarely in the middle of this giant sweep-would be literally enveloped. History shows that the plan did not go the way the Germans intended and their advance, stopped by the French and the B. E. F, meant the war became stalemate of trenches, wire and mud, a war of attrition that led to the eventual defeat of Germany. Initially, however, it seemed as though nothing could prevent the advance of the vast juggernaut of that was the German army. The first stages of the Great War went very much according to plan and the first nation casualty was Belgium. The war quite literally rolled over this small nation and students of the conflict have tended to overlook these important events as a tiny nation fought to defend itself against hopeless odds. The author of this book was an American journalist who was present in Europe at the time these events were taking place, he saw the campaign unfold with his own eyes and has recorded what he saw for posterity. This is an interesting book, about the outbreak of hostilities to the arrival on the field of battle of the British Army, told from an unusual perspective.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - An uncompromising anti-war view of the First World WarThis book, first published in 1919, is indisputably a novel. However, while this fact is made very clear on the title page of the original edition, it is coupled with the tantalising information that the incidents related in these pages and the character of the book's protagonist, the Texan Richard Byrd, are factual. Furthermore, the inspiration for Byrd was a member of the French Foreign Legion who became pilot in the legendary Lafayette Escadrille. So this volume is what we now call 'faction,' and because there is a dearth of material concerning the First World War in the air-to provide for the ongoing interest in the activities of the famous Lafayette Escadrille in particular-the Leonaur Editors believe it is appropriate to include it in our Aviation series so that readers can enjoy both the 'story' and the narration of real life events about a time when heroic military aviators really were 'the few.'Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Another brilliant collection of tales from beyond the veilTales of ghosts and horror can be found in every age, country and culture on earth; they have been passed down orally for millennia and in written form have existed for almost as long as literature itself. Although there have been notable novels of spine chilling hauntings there can be little doubt that the ghost story is a form ideally suited to short stories or novellas. The story that frightens can be explicitly so, with screaming phantoms, a morality tale or humorous, it can be subtly menacing with creeping horror, and can be set almost anywhere. Such stories have never waned in their popularity with the reading public and it is for this reason that so many authors have applied their talents to creating them. Essentially we love to be thrilled and chilled simultaneously. Some of the finest exponents of the ghost story have been specialists who became masters of the genre, while others wrote scary stories to the same high standard as all their work. In the middle of the 19th century the appetite for tales of terror burgeoned and a golden age was born that lasted until the outbreak of Great War. It is probably fair to say that the finest works of the genre were created during this period and it is principally from those that the twenty-nine stories in this substantial anthology have been drawn. This bumper collection of some of the best stories of the ghostly and horrific has been gathered together by Eunice Hetherington. In 'The Second Leonaur Book of Great Ghost and Horror Stories are 'The Yellow Cat' by Wilbur Steele, 'A Witches Den' by Mme Helena Blavatsky, 'The Box With Iron Clamps' by Florence Marryat, 'The Clavecin, Bruges' by George Wharton Edwards, 'The Lost Room' by Fitz-James O'Brien, 'The Sin Eater' by Fiona MacLeod and many more fine tales of the chilling and weird.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands. …

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - A tragedy of Virginian colonial frontierIn the summer of 1786 a large war party of Shawnee Indians entered Abb's Valley, Virginia, and descended on the household of militia officer Captain John Moore which included members of his immediate family together with hired labourers. The family occupied a substantial log building and were well armed, so Moore believed that his family was well placed to fight off a small Indian attack. The nearest homestead was six miles away and Moore, relying on his own abilities, thought it unnecessary to follow the example of neighbours by taking refuge in the nearest fort. The attack achieved complete surprise and Moore was killed before he could reach the safety of the house. What followed was an appalling, but typical, Indian massacre of the colonial period frontier in the 18th century. Various family members, young and old, were slaughtered on the spot, the property was set alight and a substantial herd of livestock was taken. Surviving members of the Moore family were taken as captives to the Indian townships, several of them being murdered on the journey. Once the survivors reached the Indian village there followed another period of torture which for Mrs. Moore and a teenage daughter proved fatal. Two young women survived their ordeals to eventually be ransomed. The story of this notable frontier tragedy was written by James Moore, a son of Mary Moore, who was one of the two ransomed captives. This a vital account of the struggles endured by the early settlers of the American wilderness and will be of essential interest to anyone interested in the early history of the state of Virginia.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The dawn of combat in the airToday everyone is so familiar with aircraft, air travel and the fact that virtually every nation's defence force includes an aerial component, so it is easy to forget that there are many people still alive whose parents were born before any practical form of working aircraft. The Wright Brothers had achieved sustained heavier than air flight in 1903-just over 100 years ago; that was only eleven years before the outbreak of the First World War, the first war in which combat took to the the skies. During the four years of the conflict the potential for aircraft in all their various forms and in all their viable tactical roles was pursued and exploited as much as the technology of the time would allow. This change in the nature of warfare (which added the first new dimension to conflict in millennia) was seen as incredible to many at the time. Certainly the impetus given to the development of powered flight by the First World War cannot be overestimated. A number of books were written during those early days of air warfare, though their number remains comparatively few, some were written by aviators themselves and some were general or unit histories. Others gathered incidents, experiences and anecdotes into anthologies which enabled an eager readership to understand what combat in the skies actually involved. This is one of those books. It covers pilot training and includes, among other things, accounts of aerial warfare from the allied perspective including night flights, bombing, Zeppelin hunting, raids, dog fights and sea-plane activity. 'The Way of the Air' concludes with an interesting hypothesis of how manned flight could have developed in the post-war period. This interesting First World War 'reader' will be a welcome addition to the libraries of all those interested in the early days of aerial warfare.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The opening campaign of the Great War as seen by the German ArmyHistory, it is said, is written by the victors and that is generally true. It is therefore often difficult for the military historian of later times to achieve a complete understanding of the position on both sides of an engagement. Sources from the losing side tend to be in shorter supply than those on the winning side. There is now much interest in the opening campaign of the First World War, not least because the outstanding defensive performance of the hugely outnumbered 'Contemptible Little Army' is particularly appealing to the sentiments of English speaking people and has entered the annals of great military achievements. Also all students of the period know that the war shortly became a stalemate, a war of attrition with barbed-wire, trenches, mud and blood that abided until the last phase of the war. This was the fluid stage of the war, when experienced county infantry regiments and cavalry fought in the way that colonial experiences had trained them to fight. So this book, written by a member of the German staff is especially interesting and vital for all students of the period. It is, as one would expect, partisan in its perspective, and reveals how the campaign of 1914 was perceived by the advancing German force. It provides much detail of how the Germans saw the actions of the B. E. F and this will be a revelation to many readers. The English editor has included very useful passages of explanation and verification which compare the German view with what history has shown were the actual facts. Numerous footnotes correct the German view of the size and disposition of enemy units, the numbers of troops engaged and the ordnance the British and their French allies had at their disposal. Verification of actual Allied positions held, resources in reserve etc. are also given to counterbalance the German view. A very welcome addition to the library of anyone interested in this campaign.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The astounding experiences of a Union ScoutThe writer of this book, R. W. Surby, was a Union soldier who served with Colonel Benjamin Grierson's cavalry brigade as it undertook its great raid through Mississippi during the American Civil War. Surby was frequently engaged in scouting and 'point' duties for the Union cavalry column. It is almost certain that it was at this time that he came into contact with the subject of this book, L. H. Naron, otherwise known as Chickasaw the scout because of his county of origin, who also served under Grierson. Surby wrote a valuable history and personal account of the Grierson Raid (published by Leonaur as 'The Horse Soldiers Raid') and the text of this present volume, dealing with Naron's wartime experiences, was originally included in that book. Naron's account does not particularly concentrate on his experiences with Grierson and is published here in its own right for the first time to bring greater focus to his story. Naron's life as a scout and spy for the Union was full of danger and incident long before he joined the Grierson command. He was a man of high principle and was deeply committed to the maintenance of the Union of states. He lived in Mississippi in a region avidly pro-Confederate where his life was threatened and even his own brother turned against him. Ultimately he had to flee to Union held territory and there he determined to do his part for the federal cause. His choice of occupation could not have been more dangerous. He spent almost his entire war behind enemy lines, either dressed in civilian clothes, openly posing as a loyal secessionist or in Confederate Army uniform, before undertaking the perilous business of crossing through both battle-lines to report his findings. Discovery and capture would have meant certain death and this intrepid man came horrifyingly close to ruin on several occasions, being saved only by an iron nerve and his almost superhuman ability to remain calm in the most trying of of circumstances. A concise but riveting read and highly recommended for all those interested in the Civil War in America.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The story of the 'last man standing'There are many military memoirs from hundreds of conflicts stretching back over the thousands of years that man has been engaged in armed conflict. For those who are aficionados of such memoirs each one has merit, and some are considered truly outstanding. The American Civil War was particularly well recorded by its combatants. Many men who left accounts for posterity fought in pivotal engagements or were members of notable corps. This book, written by a Union soldier who kept a diary of his experiences throughout the Civil War, has to be, by the finite nature of these resources, of enormous historical value, but might not at first seem to be especially notable. However, Byers served as a private soldier, sergeant and adjutant of the 5th Iowa Infantry. His was a regiment that when it was mustered contained 1,000 men; it lost 775 of them in action or through disease. Eighty men, including the author, were taken prisoner and all but 16 of them died. Of the nine men from Byers' company captured only he survived; so this is truly a story of 'the last man standing'-a survivor of a regiment that always found itself in the maelstrom of battle and which quite literally fought itself out of existence. This is a remarkable story of battle, capture and escape which will enthral any student of the American Civil War.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The girl and the monarchLucia Elizabeth (Betsy) Balcombe was born in 1802, the second child of William Balcombe, an official of the Honourable East India Company, and his wife Jane, who were living with their family in a cottage called The Briars, on the remote Atlantic Ocean island of St. Helena. Betsy and her older sister were educated in England, but in 1814 they returned to St Helena to rejoin their parents and younger brothers. After Napoleon's abdication in 1814, the allied powers had taken a liberal line on his exile and Napoleon was living like a monarch on the island of Elba, between the Italian coast and his own birthplace Corsica. Escape was inevitable and a small matter for a man of such resourcefulness, determination and ambition. In June of 1815 Napoleon and his army came to ruin on the muddy slopes of Waterloo in Belgium, thus putting to end to his 100 day gamble to wrench the crown from the weak Bourbon monarchy. No one was prepared to risk unleashing Napoleon on the world stage again and St Helena, containing a garrison and constantly circled by watchful warships, was as remote a prison as there was in the early 19th century. Napoleon's residence, Longwood House, was not ready to receive him by the time of his arrival on the island in October of 1815, so he was temporarily housed in a pavilion close to The Briars. So it was that a young French speaking English girl came into contact with the man who had set Europe ablaze. She was initially terrified of him, but gradually friendship blossomed between the teenager and the 47 year old emperor. Eventually she came to call him 'Boney' to his face-something that would have had strong men quaking in their boots-without earning a rebuke. This remarkable story of a totally unlikely relationship will enchant everyone interested in Napoleon as a man rather than as a military leader. Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The tactics of the British military during the era of 'the Great Game'By the end of the Indian Mutiny of 1857, the British Empire had secured the Indian sub-continent as the most significant jewel in the imperial crown. It is in the nature of empires that having expanded to their geographical limits, they must then turn their efforts to the consolidation and security of all they have won. Naturally, for the British at that time, it was upon India's frontiers-beyond the limits of perpetual imperial control and power-that the order of the the 'Raj' was most regularly threatened, tested and compromised. The British and Indian armies campaigned and fought their most significant engagements from the last decades of the 19th century to the outbreak of the First World War in the jungles of the east and most especially in Afghanistan and the tribal regions of the North-West Frontier. The warlike peoples of India's frontiers proved perennially troublesome, enabling the British by constant engagement to become masters of the art of colonial warfare. This book, written by an acknowledged expert, examines the business of Asiatic warfare as the British knew it during the later 19th century. It will be an invaluable resource for everyone interested in the period and for those interested in understanding the difficulties that these regions and their native peoples pose in the conflicts to the present day. Each branch of the late Victorian British and Indian armies is appraised and considered in turn and examples of its greatest achievements and errors are analysed by Younghusband. Many of these actions occurred during the Second Afghan War-and other tribal conflicts-of the mountainous north-western region, but the military methods employed in the campaigns in Assam and Burma are also evaluated. A vital book for all those who wish to understand the finely tuned and efficient military machine the colonial period British army became.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The first 'Warco's' view of the great Civil War in AmericaThe author of this book, William Howard Russell, is renowned as the 'first modern war correspondent.' Even though his first experience of war reporting was in 1850 during conflict between Prussia and Denmark, Russell, an Irishman, first came to wider recognition as a 'Times' newspaper correspondent through his coverage of the Crimean War in 1854. His dispatches from the Crimea became massively influential because, for the first time, the public were able to read about the realities of life and death on campaign and on the field of battle. This earned Russell the antipathy of the command structure, but the affection of the troops, for his honesty and candour, his generosity and sociable nature. His words inspired Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole to create proper medical care facilities for British troops which transformed the nature of military medical care in the British Army. Russell witnessed the most significant actions of the war, including the charge of the Light Brigade, and it was he who brought the phrase 'the thin red line' into the English language. The Indian Mutiny erupted in 1857 and Russell travelled to the sub-continent arriving in time to witness the final recapture of Lucknow. In 1861 the next great story was 'breaking' across the Atlantic, so Russell sailed to the United States to report on the American Civil War. His writings on the war to restore the Union are particularly interesting because Russell provided a non-partisan view combined with a wealth of experience in the observation of conflict and an ability to report it in well crafted journalistic copy. This is a book about war, but it is also a valuable collection of journalistic writing from an early master of the profession. There were many famous war correspondents after Russell but he was the first of his kind. His influence on the reporting of foreign affairs cannot be overestimated and that makes this book invaluable for military historians and those interested in the development of journalism.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket. …

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - When the blue Mediterranean turned blood redPowers that rise must fall-it is the way of things and is true of all, from the smallest realms to the mightiest of empires. There is no place on earth where this is more evident than in the lands and waters of the Mediterranean, where once the Greeks held sway, then Rome fought and conquered Carthage as it spread its influence-and the Christian faith-throughout Europe. In the 7th century, in the Arabian Peninsula, the prophet Mohammed founded Islam; it too spread quickly. It became inevitable that these two great empires of faith would both seek to dominate the region; so there came a time when Christianity and Islam overlapped and the crescent banner flew on the battlefields of Europe and particularly of Spain. By the beginning of the 14th century only Al-Andalus remained in Muslim hands and in 1492 Granada fell to the Catholic monarchs and the Moors pushed back to North Africa. Now the west began to separate from the east and territories and battle lines were drawn; the day of the Barbary pirate had come. Allied to the Ottoman sultan these ruthless freebooters were a powerful force able to hold cities and territories and to engage in pitched battles and lightning raids in search of goods and slaves. The story of the sea war of the Mediterranean, between Islam and the great sea-going city states of Europe and the famous Knights of St. John, makes fascinating reading. The Battle of Lepanto broke the corsairs as a major threat, but what makes this account especially interesting is that it follows the activities of the corsairs-who were still a formidable force-into the 19th century. Here the reader will discover the actions of the United States Navy at Tripoli, the Battle of Algiers in 1816 and the final struggles against the French at the close of the century. This is a fascinating and engrossing read for any enthusiast of naval and maritime history.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - A different perspective on the annihilation of an armyAll students of the Napoleonic era know that the Emperor marched the 'Grande Army' of nearly 430,000 men across the Niemen and eastwards into Russia. After the pyrrhic victory of Borodino the French occupied Moscow in the expectation of wintering behind the comfort of its walls in readiness for the reopening of campaigning weather the following spring. The Russians were determined to deny them that luxury and set Moscow ablaze before retreating farther into the vastness of their land, adopting a scorched earth policy that stripped the countryside of anything useful to their enemy. Napoleon realised that his position was untenable and that retreat was inevitable. The Grande Army had already been reduced to 100,000 men simply to arrive a this hopeless position. As winter-the Russian's best ally-closed in, the temperature plummeted to extremes even by Russian standards. Fatigue, hypothermia, starvation and disease added to the destruction of the invading army and silently aided the harrowing Cossacks to increase the death toll. By the time the French reached the River Berezina their numbers had been reduced to 50,000 men and after the disasters of its crossing to half that number. Only 10,000 French and allied soldiers arrived back at their starting point, where the army had seemed to be a conquering force of unstoppable size and capability. Very few of the survivors belonged to the column that had marched all the way to Moscow and back again. Achilles Rose's book takes the reader on this terrible campaign and adds new insights to the already familiar story; usefully the author draws upon the experiences of soldiers from the smaller German allied states and this gives his narrative a different and interesting perspective. Rose has also studied the true causes of the total destruction of Napoleon's Army which had little to do with bullets, bayonets or cannon-balls. In fact close examination of medical and logistical issues persuaded Rose that this was an 'army of the doomed' from the first day of its march. An absolutely essential account in every way-and highly recommended.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - An eyewitness account of Indian warfare during the American Civil WarFor anyone interested in the history of the American West-and the wars against the Plains Indian tribes in particular-this book will be a delight. The author enlisted in the Union Army to fight in the American Civil War, but instead of marching eastwards to fight the soldiers of the southern Confederacy he found himself involved in the bitter and savage campaigns against the Sioux and their allies in Minnesota. Readers may be familiar with the Plains Indian wars of the post Civil War period, dominated by the doomed figure of George Armstrong Custer, but whilst the 'boy general' was gaining fame with his Michigan cavalry brigade, the desperately under protected and vulnerable frontier settlements had to fight off sustained and overwhelming attacks by hostile Indians. Fort Ridgeley was dangerously besieged and the small town of New Ulm was so fiercely attacked and surrounded that there was the potential for massacre the like of which was unprecedented. Connelly tells his story in a way that conveys the immediacy of events; with him the reader will experience the close fought fight at Birch Coolie and the Battle of Wood Lake. The year of 1863 saw the Minnesota troops on campaign again fighting at the battles of Big Mound, Buffalo Lake and Stony Lake. While the Civil War continued many miles from the troubled frontiers of westward expansion, 1864 brought more campaigning against hostile tribes for Connelly that culminated in the Battle of the Bad Lands. The author's narrative is added to by the inclusion of panoramic battlefield drawings which usefully assist the reader's understanding.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - A classic collection of eighteen chilling stories from a little known American masterBorn in 1854, Morrow was the son of Baptist minister, hotelier and farmer in Mobile, Alabama. Moving to California in 1879, he began selling stories to 'The Argonaut' periodical where the famous author Ambrose Bierce had been working for the previous two years. Bierce recognised Morrow's talent as a writer of short stories and it is believed that it was due to Bierce's patronage that several of Morrows best known and highly regarded stories appeared in William Randolph Hearst's 'San Francisco Examiner' newspaper. Although Morrow's fame has not endured in to the same degree as some of his contemporaries, it is considered in modern academic circles that his was an enormous talent and that he deserves a place in the pantheon of significant 19th century American authors. Of course, to the aficionado of the supernatural and bizarre what matters most is whether he tells a genuinely chilling tale. Bierce certainly believed that he could and as he was no mean exponent of ghostly and horrific fiction himself he was well placed to deliver a considered judgment. However, perhaps Morrow's highest accolade came in one of Bierce's own satirical pieces in which a character exclaims, 'I have one of Will Morrow's tales in my pocket, but I don't dare to go where there is light enough to read it!' High praise indeed! In this collection readers will discover the story that is arguably Morrow's most famous, the horrible tale of dismemberment that is 'The Unconquerable Enemy' together with 'The Inmate of the Dungeon,' 'Treacherous Velasco,' 'The Faithful Amulet,' 'The Haunted Burglar,' 'The Gloomy Shadow,' 'The Haunted Automaton,' 'The Woman of the Inner Room' and nine more short stories of the disturbing and unusual.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - A clash of empires in Italy Variously called, 'The Second Italian War of Independence,' 'The Franco-Austrian War.' 'The Austro-Sardinian War' and 'The Austro-Piedmontese War' this notable European conflict of the middle years of the nineteenth century played a pivotal role in the shaping of modern Europe. The declining Austro-Hungarian empire of the Hapsburgs struggled to maintain its hold on the Italian states as they fought to create a unified nation. An alliance of Sardinia and France fought the Austrian Empire in northern Italy where, for the final time, both protagonists were commanded in the field by their respective emperors. The conflict was short, lasting only from May to July in 1859, but it included the notable battles of Magenta and Solferino which were both allied victories. The outcome of the war was a negotiated peace prompted by France's desire not to draw Prussia into the war. This book is drawn from reports made by the Times reporter on the spot and enhanced by forty illustrations by Carlo Bossoli who was a well known scenic artist of the period.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket. Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The Great War in France-a lady's intimate viewMary King Waddington was born in New York City. She married a French statesman, William Henry Waddington, his parents were naturalised citizens of France and he went on to became prime minister of his country. Mary was a prolific diarist and her account of her experiences as the wife of a diplomat ran to several volumes and were well regarded and quite popular at the time. At the outbreak of the First World War, Mary was living in Paris. Hers was the war the civilians knew and her diary gives the reader interesting insights into the domestic life of the French nation during the conflict. As Helen Prince writes in the introduction to this book, 'one fact is gossip-two related facts are history.' So we read of the two grandsons who discover a German skull, how lawns were given over to growing potatoes; we experience railway station goodbyes and many other poignant events and scenes which will vividly bring this time of tragedy back to life. Once again the reader will discover the indomitable spirit that many women displayed in times of adversity whilst caring for children, the poor, the dispossessed, attending to the wounded and other charitable acts.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - A story of love and triumph over adversityThe author of this novel wrote just one work of fiction. She was, however, a remarkable and highly creative person in other ways. An American, she was highly regarded as a writer, photographer and geographer. Widely travelled, she became the first woman board member of the National Geographic Society. Eliza Scidmore was fortunate in that her brother was a career diplomat operating principally in the Far East. She often accompanied him on his travels and this gave her access to regions that would have been very difficult for ordinary travellers to reach. She was an enthusiastic writer and books on Alaska, Japan, China, Java and India followed in rapid succession. This novel, 'As the Hague Ordains,' written in 1907, is set in Japan in the period of the Russo-Japanese War which was fought from 1904-5 and which came about as a consequence of the imperial ambitions of both Russia and Japan as they collided over the dominance of Korea and Manchuria. It tells of the adventures of the wife of a wounded Russian prisoner, Vladimir, who was captured while on a scouting patrol with his Cossacks. Unable to bear their separation she journeys to be at his side in the prisoners' hospital at Matsuyama.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The knight and the CrossThis excellent and thorough book examines the development of chivalry in tenth century Europe, then goes on to describe how the chivalric code and its development into the fighting practices of the armoured knight progressed in the warfare of the following four centuries. The author concentrates particularly on the era of the crusades in the middle east against the Moslem forces for the dominance of Jerusalem and its surrounding regions. Each campaign is described in some detail and uses contemporary first hand accounts that bring the events of the time clearly into focus. Although primarily about the first to fourth crusades, the narrative concludes with an overview of the activities of religious orders of chivalry and an examination of the battles of the Order of St John the Baptist (Knights Hospitallers) with the Ottoman Turks during the sixteenth century in the Mediterranean. A very well researched book of significant historical value this book is recommended to both serious and casual students of the subject. This book's original title, 'The History of Chivalry,' has been changed by the present publishers to more clearly reflect its true scope.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Victory snatched from imminent defeatThis book by the American, Admiral Sims will be a revelation to many. The British public had no idea that by the time America entered the First World War on 6th April, 1917 the Allied cause was on the brink of falling to the might of Imperial Germany. No plan had been conceived to ensure that vital materials would reach Britain by sea without them falling prey to the omnipresent U-Boat menace. Thousands of tons of essential war supplies were going to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean each week and serious Allied analysts believed that Britain would last less than four months before surrender was inevitable. Given what we now know of the great German land offensives of the final phase of the war, the consequences for the Allies, without a solution to the issue of maritime supply, could have been catastrophic. The solution came in the form of the creation of the convoy system and its effectiveness was due in no small part to the addition of the U. S. N. destroyer fleet to support the activities of the Royal Navy. This book describes how the German U-Boat threat was finally overcome and how this impacted on the Allied victory. Sims also gives much operational detail including the activities of the deadly decoy's, the 'Q' ships, and the operations of the 'King Cobras' of the undersea war-the anti-submarine submarines.' This is the view and account of a senior officer in a position to experience and describe for posterity the strategic and tactical issues of the anti U-Boat campaign and it describes in detail the many methods and types of craft employed together with anecdotes, reports and eyewitness accounts of the action on and under the waves. Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - A rare eyewitness account of a British infantry officer with WellingtonThis book is a first rate eyewitness narrative of the Peninsular War written by a regimental officer of the British Army. In 1807 Charles Leslie made his way to Iberia to serve with his regiment-H. M. 29th Foot (the Worcestershire Regiment)-and begin a life of campaigning against Napoleon's invading French Army. Travelling via Gibraltar and Cadiz, his first experience of the battlefield came at Rolica in 1808, followed by the Battle of Vimieiro. After a skirmish at Grijo the regiment crossed the Douro into Portugal. Return to Spanish soil saw Leslie engaged in the Battle of Talavera where the 29th performed brilliantly charging uphill and displacing the French; Leslie was wounded in the leg in this action. The regiment went on to fight in the bloody affair that was the Battle of Albuera in 1811 and Leslie's account of it makes riveting reading. As Wellington gained the advantage in Spain, the 29th joined him in his drive across the Pyrenees into the South of France and the battles that led to the abdication of the French emperor in 1814. In 1813 Leslie transferred to the 60th Rifles, and after the conclusion of the Napoleonic Wars served in Canada. This episode of Leslie's career up to 1832-together with a small section of anecdotes-concludes a highly interesting memoir. This essential volume, originally published in 1897 and rare on the antiquarian market, enhances the Leonaur collection of books on the military history of the Napoleonic era and will be a welcome addition to the bookshelves of any student of the period.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Thirteen strange stories from the genius of Robert Louis StevensonThere are very few readers who need an introduction to the works of Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, many of his tales have become enduring classics and are familiar to practically everyone in either the written word or as films, plays, television serials and even as radio programmes. Many of Stevenson's books, such as 'Treasure Island,' 'Kidnapped' and 'The Black Arrow' are iconic and genre defining works of fiction. The reason for this fact is simply that great writers create great works. Stevenson's forays into the worlds of supernatural, weird and horror fiction were, unfortunately, not so many compared with a number of his contemporaries, but and thirteen of his tales in these genres-arguably the entire canon-have been gathered together in this special single volume Leonaur edition. We believe that what might be lacking here in terms of quantity is more than balanced by the indisputable quality of Stevenson's writing skills. This collection contains one of the author's most iconic and much filmed work, the novella 'The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde'-a work of such influence that its title alone has entered the English language as a readily understood synonym for schizophrenic or aberrant behaviour. Readers will also discover here 'Thrawn Janet,' 'The Waif Woman,' 'Olalla,' 'The Body Snatcher,' 'The Isle of Voices,' 'The Poor Thing' and other superbly crafted tales to relish and disturb. A must for every collector and enthusiast of the fiction of the ghostly, bizarre and macabre.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The exploits of the world's greatest sea power from its beginnings to its triumphsThis book, originally entitled, 'Fifty-Two Stories of the British Navy from Damme to Trafalgar,' is an excellent 'reader' for all those interested in the history of British conflict at sea, from the earliest times to possibly the greatest naval battle of the age of sail-Nelson's victory over the French and Spanish fleets off Cape Trafalgar in 1805. The volume is organised chronologically and each account links to form a chain which demonstrates how the Royal Navy really did come to 'rule the waves' to the point that after Trafalgar it did not fight another major battle at sea until Jutland during the First World War. Among the many great naval officers whose exploits are detailed here are Howard, Barton, Hawkins, Drake, Blake, Rooke, Benbow, Rodney and many others. Some 600 years of warfare at sea is discussed including the many wars against the Dutch and the perennial enemy France. Great battles are detailed, including eye-witness accounts, and the reader is transported to Damme, the destruction of the Algerine Navy, the victories at La Hogue, Quiberon Bay, Cape St. Vincent, the Nile and many more. Finally the reader is introduced to the 'hearts of oak'-the great ships of Britain's fleet including Repulse, Royal George, Agamemnon, Centaur, Ramilles and other famous vessels-and their crews-whose names have entered the glorious history of the Royal Navy. Created for reading pleasure rather than in depth research this book is certain to be a welcome addition to the library of any enthusiast of the history of the great age of sail.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Napoleon Bonaparte-his life as a soldierWhile a pupil at military school Napoleon wrote to his mother that to carve his way in the world all he required was a copy of Homer and a sword. The die was cast-a ten year old boy was determined to follow the life of a soldier. Over the next thirty five years the boy would rise to army officer, general, consul and emperor of France. He would become, arguably, the most renowned soldier the world has ever known. This unique man personally commanded in 600 skirmishes and 85 full scale battles before his final defeat at Waterloo. To put Napoleon's military career in clear perspective it should be noted that he spent just 6 weeks less on campaign or under fire than he did in at the seat of power or involved in his personal life. There have been many books written about Napoleon Bonaparte but this one deals exclusively with his military career and takes the reader to from the Italian Campaign to Egypt, through pivotal battles such as Jena and Eylau, to the Iberian peninsula, the disastrous invasion of Russia, the times of retreat and defeat and the final battles 1815. Interestingly, this is a book full of anecdotes for it is the authors assertion that it is through the reports, recollections and memoirs of those who knew Napoleon and served with him that the great man's character is most clearly revealed. Certainly these many perspectives on the campaigns of the Napoleonic epoch, full of dialogue and incident, make entertaining reading. An interesting book for all those fascinated by the 'Little Corporal,' the military genius who, as the author of this book writes, 'held Europe prisoner in the folds of the French flag.' This book was originally published under the title, 'Military Career of Napoleon the Great.'Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - An anthology of the best tales of ghosts and terrorTales of ghosts and horror can be found in every age, country and culture on earth; they have been passed down orally for millennia and in written form have existed for almost as long as literature itself. It is probably fair to say that the finest works of the genre were created during this period and it is principally from those that the twenty-seven stories in this substantial anthology have been drawn. This bumper collection of some of the best stories of the ghostly and horrific has been gathered together by Eunice Hetherington.Included in 'The First Leonaur Book of Great Ghost and Horror Stories' are 'The Were-Wolf' by H.B. Marryat, 'The Withered Arm' by Thomas Hardy,' 'Clarimonde' by Theophile Gautier, 'The Rival Ghosts' by Brander Mathew, 'The Silent Woman' by Leopold Kompert and many more wonderful tales of the macabre.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.…

There was a huge public appetite for spine chilling tales and many magazines published their ideal form-the short story. This created opportunities for many writers to produce supernatural fiction. Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - An ancient conflict brought vividly to life by its greatest historianFor those familiar with contemporary works of military history there may be something disconcerting about a book written over 2,000 years ago. The Athenian Thucydides was however an historian very much in the modern mould, who wrote without making reference to 'the Gods' and who relied upon the verification of facts to assemble his narrative. So contemporary readers might be surprised-and delighted even-to discover here a very readable text full of vital and immediate detail. The Peloponnesian War, fought in the fifth century B. C between the city-states of Greece, lasted twenty seven years. The warring factions were the the dominant Greek city-state Athens, supported by its imperial allies, and Sparta which led the Peloponnesian League. The war comprised three phases, the first of which, the 'Archidamian War' involved sustained land attacks on Attica by the Spartans whilst Athens raided the enemy coastline with its superior naval power. A brief peace soon failed and then Athens dispatched a force to Sicily where it was annihilated. The final phase, 'The Ionian War' or 'Decelean War,' proved decisive, as Sparta both allied itself with the Persian Empire and supported subject states in their rebellions against Athens. Critically, this strategy deprived Athens of its naval supremacy at the Battle of Aegospotami and forced its surrender. The war was long, bitter and destructive, with swathes of the countryside being devastated and whole cities destroyed. Atrocities on a grand scale were common. The outcome of the war fundamentally changed the character of ancient Greece and the conflict is considered to have terminated Greece's classical 'golden age.' New readers should not be daunted by the antiquity of this work which is recommended to all those interested in the warfare of the ancient world. Includes maps to assist the modern reader in understanding both the theatre of war and specific engagements.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The creation of a new Europe in fire and blood Europe during the second half of the nineteenth century was in turmoil. Ancient empires sought to hold and consolidate their power, smaller states struggled to forge themselves into new nations and old enmities fanned the fires of conflict. The Seven Weeks War of 1866, the subject of this book, was also known as the Austro-Prussian War, the German War, the Unification War, the German Civil War and the Fraternal War-and when considered as part of the process which brought about the unification of Italy, the Third Independence War. A substantial confederation of German states under the influence of the Austrian empire fought Prussia supported by its own German allies and the kingdom of Italy. The outcome was a decisive victory for Prussia and Italy that ensured future Prussian dominance over the states of Germany; Austria's power over Italy was further destabilised by territorial gains achieved by Italy in Venetia. Eight significant battles on land and sea were fought between the 24th June and the 22nd July 1866. Koniggratz, fought on the 3rd July, 1866, was probably the most decisive Prussian victory and is the battle most remembered today, although 17 days later the Austrian fleet inflicted a significant defeat upon the Italian navy at Lissa. The Austro-German alliance acquitted itself well in battle but was significantly outnumbered by its opponents and suffered almost twice as many casualties. This book is a thorough and scholarly examination of this European war which was fought while the British Empire was preoccupied with consolidation of its territories or the fighting of comparatively small colonial wars. It was one of the earliest wars of the industrial age and will interest all those fascinated by the history of the creation of modern Europe.
