Bannockburn remains iconic because it was the most significant Scottish victory in the First War of Scottish Independence and because it involved a Scottish army under the command of the heroic figure of Robert the Bruce. The English, led by their king, marched north to relieve Stirling Castle which was under attack by Scots commanded by Edward Bruce the Scottish king's younger brother. The battle need not have been fought because Bruce had agreed a definition of 'relief' with Mowbray, the British commander holding the castle, based on the proximity of the English Army. However, the 'die was cast' and battle duly joined. This was a poor decision by the English monarch who had substantially lost command of his battle host. The outcome of the battle was a crushing defeat for the English and Edward, with his bodyguard, fled for his life. Towards the end of the year the Germans stood at the First Battle of Ypres-a pivotal engagement that marked the beginning of the war of stalemate. The Indians were… desperate for food and, furthermore, sought revenge for outrages perpetrated against them by white settlers-including the murder of Scarlet Point's brother and his family. The killing spree that followed cost the lives of 35-40 settlers who were isolated on their own land holdings. At Spirit Lake the Indians also abducted four women and carried them into captivity. Notable among them was the fourteen year old, Abbe Gardner who survived to be ransomed during the following summer and subsequently wrote an account of her ordeal (is also available as a Leonaur edition). Two attempts were made by government forces to pursue the fleeing Indians from Forts Dodge and Ridgely, but tardy management, a delay in setting off and appalling weather in the form of almost impassable snowfall, meant both rescue and reprisal missions failed. The Spirit Lake raid and massacre was the last Indian attack to take place in Iowa. He was first posted to India and then to Natal Province, South Africa where his service earned him mentions in dispatches and promotion. In 1896, he served in the Second Matabele War in Rhodesia, taking part in the expedition to relieve Bulawayo and in reconnaissance work into tribal territory. He served in the Fourth Ashanti War and in 1897, at the age of 40, went on to became the British Army's youngest colonel. He later commanded the 5th Dragoon Guards and returned briefly to India.
