Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Taken by the Indians of the WestAs the inexorable passage of pioneer immigrants pushed westward into the vastness of the American wilderness it was inevitable that the new settlers would collide with the indigenous peoples in their path and that this clash of cultures over that most precious of commodities, the land upon which to live freely, would come to bloodshed. This was hostility that saw little mercy for the combatants, but for women and children an Indian raid could end with not only the loss of male relatives but also with captivity at the hands of tribal warriors. Many a pioneer woman disappeared never to be heard of again, but some were rescued or lived to tell of-and indeed write down-accounts of their gruelling experiences. This book chronicles the experiences of seven such women, including Cynthia Parker-the mother of Quannah Parker-one of the most renowned and feared chiefs of the Comanche's in the history of the American West. Each of these pieces is too small to achieve individual re-publication in modern times, but in this book Leonaur has gathered them together in a gripping collection which is essential reading for those interested in the pioneer movement and the fortitude and endurance of remarkable western women in adversity. Available in soft cover and hard cover with dust jacket.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Experiences of the wife of an officer in greenMrs Fitz Maurice's book, The Rifleman's Wife is often quoted in Cope's History of the Rifle Brigade, the Leonaur editors therefore thought it fitting that it should be reintroduced to the modern reader since in reveals the life of an officer's wife of the Rifles on active service in some detail. The narrative is divided into two distinct sections. The first-and largest-section is an account of the experiences of the author in the post-Napoleonic Wars period commencing in 1827. The book concludes with a gathering together of anecdotes told to the author concerning the regiment's time in the Peninsular War which-she asserts-'have not seen publication elsewhere.' This female perspective will be invaluable to all those seeking a more complete picture of the Rifles' 'regimental family' in the early part of the nineteenth century and will help to complete many 'Rifles libraries' since it has been unavailable for some time except upon the antiquarian market. Available in soft cover and hard cover with dust jacket for collectors.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Experiences of battle and hardship in early 20th century ChinaThe siege of the foreign legations in Peking in 1900 is a familiar moment in history principally because it joined in common adversity the ministers, citizens and military men of several nations in a defence within exotic surroundings against the Boxers and Imperial Chinese Army. The United States, Japan, Russia, Italy, The Netherlands, France, Great Britain, Austria-Hungary, Belgium, Germany and Spain were all involved. The first attempt to relieve the besieged failed and the multi-national garrison was left to its own devices for several weeks. This account of the siege from within, by an American civilian, provides the reader with an invaluable insight into one of the most unusual episodes of modern military history. Available in soft cover and hard cover with dust jacket.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - On the spot reportage of catastrophe and victory in Victorian AfricaThis book has much in common with D. C. F. Moodie's work on the subject published by Leonaur under the title 'Zulu:1879.' Wilmot was also present in South Africa at the time the events were unfolding and his book was completed there before the year was over. Wilmot also seems to have had access to those who experienced at first hand the war's low and high points and he was also made reference to Blue Books and the work, reports and letters of correspondents of all kinds. Whilst this manner of reportage lacks the evaluation of time considered analysis, it nevertheless provides an immediacy that no true history book can possibly match. Wilmot's perspective of the Zulu War gives the reader a predictably colonial view of the causes of the conflict as well as an outline of its principal events. Much valuable information is found in his accounts of Isandhlwana, Ekowe, Ulundi and the hunt and capture of Cetywayo. Available in soft cover and hard cover with dust jacket for collectors and an essential addition to any library of the Zulu War.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Blood and fire on the wild borderlandDuring the Middle Ages the Kingdoms of England and Scotland were frequently at war and even in times of peace the relationship between the two nations was an uneasy one rife with understandable antipathy. It was inevitable that it would be along the borderline, in the furthest North of England and most southern Scotland, where old enemies faced each other with little to divide them that the peace would be most fragile and often broken. This was a wild country controlled by powerful families on both sides of national lines that bred a hard people equal to its demands. This was the country of the blood feud, the lightning raid and the flame and blade in the night. The Reivers-reckoned to be the finest light cavalry of their day led by daring captains expert in their trade- raided in pursuit of property, cattle, vengeance and were often less than particular who-or what nationality- their victims were particularly if they were unprotected by powerful allies or lacked the security of a stout stone Peel tower. This is an in depth and serious history of these troubled times which lasted until the end of the 16th century and an essential reference source for the subject. Available in soft cover and hard back with dust jacket.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The Boer War from an able writers penAlthough the title of this book reflects some of its subject matter, in fact, the relief of Mafeking is the objective-the concluding triumph-towards which many of the events recorded within its pages are concerned and directed. More correctly it is a newspaperman's view from that golden age of journalism when the special correspondent travelled to any number of far flung battlegrounds in the company of British troops to observe, chronicle and send home the news to the British Empire's public. Filson Young was the consummate media man whose career would make a fascinating book in its own right. At the time of the Boer War he was a young journalist working for the Manchester Guardian and his writing ably represents that's newspapers reputation for fine writing. This is an excellent book in every way. Young intimately introduces us to 'Tommy Atkins' and with him and them he describes the war on the veldt-full of anecdote, expert description and incident-up to and beyond the relief of Mafeking itself. Recommended. …

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Under siege in imperial ChinaMary Gamewell was a missionary of the Methodist Episcopal Church in China. This riveting account of a good woman continuing her vocational work despite every adversity will absorb those interested Women missionaries, the China of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and the turbulent time of the Boxers. Gamewell was already an 'old China' hand by 1900. She had experienced the Chungking Riot of 1886 and knew well the dangers which could beset Europeans in her position. Her view of the siege of Peking itself will interest any student of the subject. Available in soft cover or hard back with dust jacket.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Two classic first hand accounts of 18th century American Colonial WarfareBritain's victory in the French and Indian War did not bring peace to the American wilderness. Formal treaties between European powers meant little to the native Indian allies of each side who perpetuated their opposition to their white and 'red' skinned enemies in hopes of a return to a former balance of power and influence. So it was that Chief Pontiac of the Ottawa's at the head of a confederation of Indian allies rose up in 1763 slaughtering the occupants of settlements and burning forts before he came before the substantial defences of Detroit. The principal account of this engagement told within this book comes from the pen of the secretary to the posts commanding officer. It is thorough in its detail and gripping as a story in almost cinematographic proportions. Those who have been fascinated by the accounts of beleaguered garrisons such as Rorke's Drift, Chitral and others with find much to engage them here. Readers who are fascinated by the French and Indian War will appreciate this book's second piece from the pen of that most famous of rangers-Major Robert Rogers-who provides his customary incisive view of the events of the war. Highly Recommended.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The Royalist and the ParliamentarianThese two comparatively short pieces have been brought together by the Leonaur Editors in the interests of good value and also because it may be improbable that they would achieve publication singly in modern times. They each give the reader an insight into the life of English people-each one with political sympathies opposed to the other-during the time of social upheaval and conflict which was the English Civil War of the mid-seventeenth century. These are very personal documents which reflect and comment upon the great events which were unfolding and upon the more immediate effect these had on the lives of ordinary people. Perhaps most significant are those passages-perhaps peculiar to a house divided-that reveal how every day life carried on against a backdrop of war. Available in soft cover and hard cover with dust jacket.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The first 15 years of the famous green sharp-shootersThere has been much revived interest in recent years in the activities of Wellington's elite green clad riflemen-the famous 95th.In William Cope it found a worthy historian who chronicled over 75 years of the regiment's history in his substantial book 'The History of the Rifle Brigade'. The Leonaur editors are aware that those interested in military history-both casual readers and academics-tend to focus on periods of time often defined by wars. It is certain that the earliest period of the regiment's history from its inception through the turbulent years of the wars principally against Napoleonic France and its allies holds particular interest for many. Indeed, it was during these momentous times that the 95th was both formed and was particularly active. As a consequence this aspect of the regiment's history constitutes half of the subject matter of Cope's more expansive work. The Leonaur Editors believe the best and most economical way of giving readers access to Cope's work is to divide it into two volumes. The second volume concerns the period immediately after the age of Napoleon up to the mid-Victorian era. This first volume has much to interest the Napoleonic student since it chronicles the 95th through all their campaigns of that time. We join the Rifles in South America, at Copenhagen, in Spain and Portugal, in the Americas and on the bloody slopes of the fields of Waterloo as the Emperor was finally brought to account. An excellent and essential history in every way with maps of principal engagements, this book is available in soft cover and hard cover with dust jacket for collectors.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Two volumes of the life of the dynamic wife of a great soldierJohn Churchill, Duke of Marlborough was without question one of the finest military commanders the British Isles has ever produced. He was singular in several ways, but he was also fortunate in those about him. In Eugene of Savoy he had a military man of such capability and stature that it is incredible that the two men were contemporaries, let alone allies. He had close relations with Godolphin and was a prized confident of Queen Anne. But in his marriage he was doubly blessed. Sarah Churchill was not only his wife but the love of his life and their mutual affection and commitment to each other endured beyond the flush of youth. Additionally Sarah Churchill was not made of the material that readily prepared an aristocratic lady made for a life of idleness. Hers was a volatile strong willed personality and she was, in many ways, centuries ahead of her time. She aided Godolphin and her husband in support of the Queen and campaigned vigorously for the Whig party never shrinking from confrontations which often threw her out of favour with the powerful and influential. Always she was her husbands agent on the home front as he engaged in the memorable battles of the War of Spanish Succession. These two volumes chronicle the life of this remarkable woman and provide essential detail and context to students of the life and campaigns of the Duke of Marlborough himself. Available in soft cover or hard cover with dust jacket.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Volume 2 of a special editionThis is the second volume of Leonaur's special two volume edition created by dividing Cope's expansive work on the green coated sharpshooters-the famous Rifles. Where Volume 1 concentrated on the birth and early years of the regiment as it fought all over the globe against the Spanish, the Danes, the Napoleonic era French and the emergent American nation, this volume takes up the regimental story immediately after the destruction of the French First Empire on the bloody fields of Waterloo. The nations of Europe were about to enter an extraordinarily long period of peace-compared to its recent history-and it would be some forty years before another major conflict came the way of the British Army. Great Britain was now about to create her own empire and this would involve soldiering in many small conflicts to the end of the Victorian period. Cope's history considers the activities of The Rifles-soon to be The Rifle Brigade-up to 1876; so the reader will join them in the early 19th century struggles against the native tribes of South Africa in what became the Kaffir Wars. War against Russia drew them towards the Crimea where disease and privation killed more than battle. The turbulent 1850's also brought the horrific outburst of violence that was the Indian Mutiny, during which The Rifles shouldered their share of the fighting-including an interesting experiment as camel borne troops. Rebellion in Canada called them to colder climes but their services-always in demand-propelled them, in complete contrast to the final campaign covered by this book, into the steaming jungles of West Africa against the Ashanti. This is an indispensable history for anyone interested in this famous regiment and it is available to soft cover or hard cover with dust jacket for collectors.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Marlborough at WarIt is a trait of any nation's regard for it's great men that its focus falls upon few and each eclipses those that precede it. Exceptionally, for the British, the fame of Duke of Wellington, who brought to book the great tyrant of his age, has thus far endured where fine commanders who came after him are all but forgotten in the popular mind. The names of Clive, Roberts and Kitchener are now seldom celebrated despite their deserved fame in their lifetimes. John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, perhaps suffers from belonging to an age nearly a century before Arthur Wellesley began his career. Yet in Marlborough the nation has certainly its first great military man and almost certainly one who stands equal, if not higher, than any who came after him. A political genius as well as a military one, Marlborough often managed to achieve victory when his own allies conspired to prevent him. Yet more remarkable was that Marlborough was able to cooperate with another great commander of his time, Prince Eugene of Savoy. Marlborough's Wars were fought against the ancient enemy-the military might and the pervasive influence of the France of the Bourbons. Taylor's brilliant, substantial, detailed and comprehensive history of the campaigns of the early 18th century bring this vividly to life and takes us in volume 1, in company with Marlborough himself, his chroniclers and those who experienced the marches and battlefields of Europe with him, to the victories of Blenheim and Ramilles. This highly recommended book is essential for every student of the period. Available in soft cover or hard cover with dust jacket.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The intimate correspondence of historyWhat needs to be said about the relationship between Napoleon and Josephine that has not become legend He was a humble Corsican who rose meteorically through the ranks of the armies of Revolutionary France to be become First Consul and then Emperor of the First Empire. She was his lover from the earliest days, swept up in his rising fortunes until she became Empress by his side, only to be cast away in favour of an Austrian princess who could give the Emperor an heir. Yet theirs was never a straightforward or easy relationship. Both took lovers and despite his own infidelities and tolerance, Napoleon felt extreme pangs of jealousy and wrote of them plainly in his correspondence. Napoleon reveals himself to be a man of raging passions both for Josephine and the creation of an Empire worthy of his genius. As one would expect, these letters are barely confined to pillow talk. Here was a soldier at the head of a conquering army that set Europe ablaze. Much of the progress of his campaigns is reported in the most personal detail. Here are those who surrounded the Emperor most closely-the soldiers, the court and the ever troublesome family. Here are the great events of the age from great campaigns, battles and fallen monarchs to assassination attempts. Here are the highs and the lows of two incredible turbulent lives. Essential reading for those fascinated by the Napoleonic age and who wish to listen to the immediate thoughts of the great man to his lover across time on all the issues that touched him closest. Available in soft cover and hard cover with dustjacket.…
