By 1793 he was a colonel of the First (later Grenadier) Guards and in command of his own battalion. After several administrative positions he was appointed acting governor of Gibraltar, a post he held until 1808. The next part of Dalymple's career was the one for which he is principally remembered, although it is blighted by controversy. He was appointed Commander of the Portuguese Expedition to replace Burrard and Wellesley (the future Duke of Wellington) after the victory at Vimiero, where the French force under Junot had been comprehensibly defeated. Dalrymple infamously halted Wellesley's pursuit of the French to Lisbon and subsequently became instrumental in the truce known as the Convention of Cintra, which allowed the French to be transported back to France in possession of the spoils of their invasion. Farms and settlements were attacked, most notably at the Redwood Agency, Milford, Leavenworth and Sacred Heart. Fort Ridgely and the township of New Ulm were assaulted and military forces suffered a significant defeat at The Battle of Birch Coulee. Attacks on stagecoach stations, forts and settlements spread into Northern Minnesota before the Sioux were eventually defeated. Hundreds of settlers and soldiers had been killed. Reprisals were brutal including the mass execution of thirty-eight Sioux warriors. This book contains two accounts of those turbulent times. A farmer until 1786, he returned to the army rising in rank to lieutenant-general in 1801. Today, Blücher is remembered for his cooperation with the Duke of Wellington during 'The Hundred Days' campaign in 1815, which resulted in the allied victory at Waterloo and the final downfall of Napoleon, who never had a more implacable foe than Blücher. He pressed on with unrelenting energy despite his advancing years, through many campaigns and battles and undaunted in his resolution despite suffering numerous military setbacks. The turn of the tide came in 1813 at Leipzig, 'The Battle of the Nations', where at last an army under his command prevailed. After the campaign of 1814 in North-eastern France, Blücher favoured blowing up the Jena Bridge to punish Paris for the sufferings of his homeland. The First Empire of the French had fallen, but the following year Field-Marshal Blücher was again at hand to administer the coup de grace in Belgium. Neuware - Singer, orator and revolutionaryBelgian born Anne-Josephe Théroigne (Terwagne) of Méricourt (Marcourt) was active as an agitating revolutionary agent in the Austrian held Low Countries towards the end of the eighteenth century. In 1789, dressed as a man, she was present at the National Assembly i…n Paris where she engaged in promoting the French Revolution and the rights of women. In 1791 these activities resulted in her being imprisoned by the Austrians. When she returned to Paris in 1792, she was welcomed as a heroine, but went on to suffer continual criticisms of her character for alleged sexual immorality. Her alliance with the moderate Girondin political party resulted in radical Jacobin women turning against her, and in the spring of 1793 in the Jardin de Tuileries she was stripped naked, severley beaten and might well have been killed but for the intervention of Jean-Paul Marat, who would later be assassinated himself. Théroigne went on to suffer painful headaches and developed mental disorders. Her behaviour became progressively more erratic and in 1794 she was certified insane and committed to an asylum where she remained until her death in 1817, aged 54 years.
