In the museum, they quickly become the favourites of visitors, are beleaguered by school kids and jealously protected by museum attendants. Those who dare to closely approach the casts, made…from polyester resin, are rewarded with an unabashed look at things which could never be so uninhibitedly studied on the real model: wrinkles, facial hair and other bodily imperfections. And yet, Duane Hanson's objective is not blatant voyeurism but the opening of a view onto those things we prefer to overlook, onto the drabness of everyday life, and in the last consequence onto mortality - also that of the viewer. The helpless, empty gaze, which characterizes almost all of his figures, testifies to the high price paid by many for a life in the American dream. This monograph documents all stages of Hanson's original work, his "oeuvre". The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Issued in conjunction with a 2014 exhibition of the metal "Tower" sculpture rendered by Polish artist Monika Sosnowska (b. 1972). "It consists of ninety-six window, thirty-four I-profiles, three hundred and eighty-four handles, and three hundred…and eighty-four hinges. The project required about 1.5 kilometers of welding, and the sculpture weighs thirteen tons in total. 'Tower' was subsequently disassembled into forty-nine elements, and shipped to New York, where it arrived in August 2014. Reassembled in the gallery space of Hauser & Wirth at 511 West 18th Street, 'Tower' was unveiled on September 5, 2014."
