Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - For fifteen-and-a-half-year-old Joanne, the sensible, responsible kid in the Johnston family, the summer days seem endless and routine. When a cute, smooth-talking traveler from out east shows up during her shift at Johnston's Midwest Dairy Stand and invites her to join him on his road trip to California, she is flattered and tempted. She knows it's crazy and possibly dangerous-a teenage hitchhiker has just been murdered nearby-but she despairs of anything exciting ever happening to her; this could be her last chance. She takes some money from the till, leaves a note for her mom, locks up the stand, and climbs into the stranger's Porsche. As they travel west, Joanne discovers that Brice is many things, not all of them trustworthy or kind, but she is so in love with the idea of being wanted, she keeps finding ways to please him and excuse his quixotic moods-until the two are confronted by an emergency on the highway. The crisis plunges Joanne back into the childhood nightmare of her father's death and forces her to choose between her dreams of romance and what she knows she has to do.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Aleksandr Ekditsov, a Moscow-based Russian oligarch, owns among his multiple business ventures, a vodka distilling company managed by his son Boris. Their vodka is authentic, unpretentious, and faithful to its origins. Pure and simple, smooth, unadulterated, and flawless. It is a word-class spirit they now propose to promote internationally. Ekaterina Ekditsova, Aleksandr's stunning daughter, is as unblemished as the vodka itself. She travels the world extravagantly in the lap of luxury, while presenting herself as a transient - or perhaps she has her own agenda which she shrouds, cleverly cloaking it. Jon Levine, demonstrating his customary verve, throws the dice creatively to become the straw that stirs this quintessential vodka escapade. Intermixing Russian vodka and Russian spies, the action moves from the warmth of South Florida to the frigid cold of Moscow. With more twists and turns then the helix of a corkscrew, this seventh iteration of the Jon Levine novels is a page-turner that keeps the reader guessing.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - As a magazine reporter early in the Vietnam War, Tony Plattner wrote a highly acclaimed fourteen-part series for Aviation Week & Space Technology magazine. It was noted for its accuracy and forecasts of a long-term involvement if the Johnson administration did not change its inept strategy. With his integrity at risk, he fought back tenaciously against the Defense Department's attempt to convict him first as a criminal under the Espionage Act and later to cashier him prematurely from the Marine Reserve. The resulting decade-long battle was met with ingenuity, grit, determination and support from many sources and resulted in ultimate resolution in his favor.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Retired Sheriff Bob Winter (Santa Clara County, California) now lives in the Sierra Nevada foothills, with his wife, Carolyne and their dog, Molly. He is as comfortable in his workshop with home improvement projects, wood carving, exotic wooden chests, garden art, and bird houses, or in his garden with plants and masonry projects, as he is with researching American and family history.Bob was raised on a ranch in southern Santa Clara County, facing many of the same experiences he ascribes to his principal character, Jesse Logan, a name he borrowed from a great-grandfather. To some extent, the story Bob writes mirrors his own life story, finding his way from a deputy sheriff amongst the 5,000-member force of Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department to the position of Sheriff of Santa Clara County (Silicon Valley), California. Like many of our readers, he has never been without hostile opposition in his own career, whether it be from a disgruntled, but politically connected co-worker, or a superior officer critical of his sometimes impulsive approach to his work as a peace officer. The story he has provided weaves history, family tradition, and fiction as Bob follows the life of a young man from boyhood to adulthood and from the Great Smokey Mountains to Carson Valley, Nevada, through the course of the Civil War. His experiences as a boy in 'Carson County', Nevada put him in a position to take an assignment in the Union Army as a rifleman, or 'sharpshooter' leading him through some near-death experiences to finally survive the war.The story follows actual events throughout the Civil War, using authentic members of the opposing armies as supporting characters for the adventures and misadventures of the principal characters. The author has used the character and personalities of people in his own life to provide authenticity to the players in his tale. Many of the characters in Sheriff Winter's story are recreations of real people, including some of his own family, who settled first in Guilford County, North Carolina, where his 4th great grandfather, a second-generation colonist, was a colonel in the British occupational army, leading the British forces against members of his own family in the American Revolution. Later in the family history, they settled in the Carson Valley, leaving their mark in both of those places. One product of (3rd great grandfather) Ben Jones' handiwork can be seen in the Mormon Station Museum in Genoa, Nevada, and the 'town' of Spurgeon, Tennessee was named for some of Bob's own ancestors.Bob's family has been in cattle ranching for generations, and several of the supporting characters in the story are taken from tales of the old west as conveyed by Bob's father Rowland Winter. In some places he has used the actual names and personalities of real people in his past, and in other places, he uses pseudonyms for obvious reasons.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - They say 'never judge a book by its cover'. The book the reader now holds in their hands is a good example of a book that should not be judged by the title. This book's title can be deemed misleading. But a book can represent a person who ought not to be prejudged for his or her worth.'I wish I could have done more in joining with others to bridge the deep ethnic and political divide that so menacingly threatens to burst asunder the social fabric of our fragile democracy. But the age old problem seems to be deeply embedded in the Guyanese national psyche, that is why it will take years of hard work before it shows signs of its beginning to gradually wither away.Perhaps it will be the next generation to whom the responsibility will fall to heal the wounds and lift Guyana onwards, upwards!'.
