Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 3rd Edition. A Concise History of Modern Painting by Herbert Read. Preface by Benedict Read; Concluding Chapter by Caroline Tisdall & William Feaver. 1974 Trade Paperback with Color Illustrations. Enlarged Edition Published by Oxford University Press. From the cover blurb :: "The art of one's own time is the most difficult to interpret. Sir Herbert Read, perhaps the most influential interpreter of modern art, combined a lifelong involvement n contemporary art with a breadth of historical perspective that few have tried to emulate.Since its publication in 1959, "A Concise History of Modern Painting" remains the best introduction to the subject ever written. "Taking Cezanne as his starting point, he sets out to trace the development of the visual experience involved in painting and to show how it has been related to the general movement of thought and sensibility during the twentieth century. His account of this evolution is in terms of the initial artistic impulses, Cubism, Futurism, Surrealism, and Dada; the great pioneers, Picasso, Kandinsky, and Klee; and the emergent principles of 'determined relations' (as in Constructivism) and 'internal necessity' (as in Abstract Expressionism). "For this new edition, the developments of the 1960s and the early 1970s, in their logical, and occasionally illogical relation to the previous developments in the art of the century, are discussed in a chapter by Caroline Tisdall and William Feaver that both complements Read's insights and points toward the art of the future." Hardcover. Condizione: Good. This is "Photography To-Day" written by D. A. Spencer and published by Oxford University Press in 1936. As well as containing a good many fascinating photographs that demonstrate the height of photographic art in 1936, there is a lot of technical information about the science and aesthetics of photographic composition. It is obvious from the emphasis in this book on miniature camera, secret photographic techniques, aerial landscape photography, detecting photographic forgeries, methods of transmitting photographs by means of radio and telegraph, etc. that England was preparing for war. Of particular interest is a photograph included in the text that is only identified as a "cinema audience". The photograph was taken by means of an invisible infra-red process. Revealed is an audience that did not know (we presume) that it was being photographed in the dark. Also revealed as present are Edward VIII , King of England, and sitting a couple of seats away is Mrs. Simpson, the women he loved , and for whom he would abdicate the throne in December of 1936. In this photo, Edward VIII, still King of England, plainly looks worried - quite a weight on his shoulders! Had he already decided to abdicate, or was he still struggling with that enormous step? A very interesting historic moment in time, captured (we presume) surreptitiously. The shot was a Daily Mail Photograph, courtesy of Ilford Ltd. In England, at that time - and aside from what ever horrors were brewing in Europe, - all that was on the minds of the English people were their King, Edward VIII, and "That Woman". TITLE : Photography To-Day AUTHOR : D. A.
