A classic instructional chess book by Leonard Barden, Joint British Champion and longtime chess editor, focusing exclusively on the Ruy Lopez (Spanish Opening). Originally published in 1963, this volume provides structured analysis, annotated games, and strategic explanations designed to help players master one of chess's most important openings after 1 P-K4. This softcover copy is in good vintage condition, showing typical wear to the covers and spine from age and use, while the text remains clean and fully legible. An excellent reference for students of classical chess openings and a solid addition to any chess library.

Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. viii+242 pages with diagrams and indexes. Royal octavo (8 1/4" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. Second edition. The King's Indian Defence is a common chess opening. It arises after the moves: 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 Black intends to follow up with 3.Bg7 and 4.d6 (the Grünfeld Defence arises when Black plays 3.d5 instead, and is considered a separate opening). White's major third move options are 3.Nc3, 3.Nf3 or 3.g3, with both the King's Indian and Grünfeld playable against these moves. The Encyclopaedia of Chess Openings classifies the King's Indian Defence under the codes E60 through E99. The King's Indian is a hypermodern opening, where Black deliberately allows White control of the centre with their pawns, with the view to subsequently challenge it. In the most critical lines of the King's Indian, White erects an imposing pawn centre with Nc3 followed by e4. Black stakes out their own claim to the centre with the Benoni-style .c5, or .e5. If White resolves the central pawn tension with d5, then Black follows with either .b5 and queenside play, or .f5 and an eventual kingside attack. Meanwhile, White attempts to expand on the opposite wing. The resulting unbalanced positions offer scope for both sides to play for a win. Condition: Corners bumped else near fine.

This book has been revised and expanded to take account of the immense amount of serious competitive play in the decade since the first edition was completed in 1966. During this period the Petroff has gained a new supporter in the person of the former world champion Petrosian. Some commentators even attribute the loss of the title in 1969 to his failure to carry on playing the Petroff after it had brought him two comfortable draws late in the match against Spassky. Meanwhile, older supporters of the defence such as Smyslov and Bronstein have not lost faith in it. Even the former world title holder Karpov has adopted it occasionally. Condition: Corners and spine ends gently bumped, front end paper clipped else very good.

A technical and economic history delineating how three major aspects of geophysics evolved from simple scientific beginnings and came to impact on civilization in many diverse ways. Topics covered include the growth of geophysical exploration into a highly profitable international business, the opening of the American Arctic to modern science and industry, and the utilization of geophysics in military combat and nuclear arms control. In the closing chapter, over 40 noted earth scientists (including Sir Harold Jeffreys, Cecil Green, Frank Press, Roger Revelle, and J. Tuzo Wilson) denote their major contributions to this unique field. This book is the first to treat simultaneously the evolution of exploration geophysics and the allied sciences of seismology and oceanography as it occurred in three key countries - Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. An absorbing account for all practicing earth scientists and their families, investors in the industry, and persons interested in economic geology, public and world affairs, military warfare, the history of science and technology, environmental sciences and even outdoor adventure.
