It is where the first Turks (mainly Turkish Cypriots) used to meet. This was their one and only meeting point out of necessity as they did not have any associations, cafes or restaurants of their own to gather and socialise. Although it is known that some Turkish Cypriots arrived in London in the 1920's and 1930's Turkish Cypriots started coming in bigger numbers to London in the 1940's and 'Güvercinlik' is the place where their journey started.

Schauplatz ist Antep mit seinem ländlichen Umland. Was mir besonders gefiel, ist, wie er die Ehrfurcht vor der Natur beschreibt und mythologische Elemente verwendet. Unterschwellig sind die Auswirkungen der Völkermorde von 1915 und Dersim 193738, sowie das Pogrom vom 6.-7. September 1955 in Istanbul zu spüren. So ist der Sohn des Grundbesitzers, Mehmet Ali, ein Abbild der studentischen Jugend der 40er Jahre, die sich mehr und mehr dem Sozialismus zuwandte. Nicht wenige Söhne reicher Grundherren orientierten sich seinerzeit nach links. Iskan Tolun glorifiziert die Liebe durch seine Figuren, den Hirten Ismail und Aysecik, ebenso wie den Widerstand und letztendlichen Sieg des Guten über das Böse. Aysecik ist ein ganz klein wenig ein Abbild der Aysecik, die in den Freilichtkinos im Sommer ganz Anatolien tosen liess. Im Hintergrund wiederum spürt man die weibliche Weisheit der ehrbaren Tante Anus. Und selbst Yasar Kemal lässt euch durch den jungen Schriftsteller und Journalisten, der uns im Zug begegnet, grüssen. Immerhin könnte man sagen, dass auch Iskan Tolun derselben Schule entsprungen ist. Und die böse Figur des Romans, der gnadenlose, der durchgedrehte Yavuz ist im Grunde genommen nur das Opfer eines Systems von Militarismus; eines Wehrdienstes, zu dem die jungen Menschen zum Wohle des Vaterlands verpflichtet werden. Die 12-jährige Esma wiederum fällt ihm zum Opfer. Dagegen verkörpert die junge Frau Aysecik den Widerstand. Ein Buch, das genau in dieser Zeit lesenswert ist, da man über den Istanbuler Vertrag diskutiert, welcher Gewalt gegenüber Frauen verhindern soll; und wo gleichzeitig darüber gestritten wird, ob die Verheiratung von 12-jährigen Mädchen religiös rechtmässig sei.
