Fair to poor, cloth at front spine groove is torn part way down from top and worn at edges, hinges badly cracked, shaken, text block is intact. Hutchings of Yosemite Published at the Old Cabin, Yo Semite Valley, and at Pacific Press Publishing House, Oakland Cal. 1886. This book is a great artifact of Yosemite history! This is a rare copy of the first edition. 496 pages. Gilded, original mustard color cloth and spine. It is in fair condition. With minor bowning on the cover, spotting and foxing. It has one large folding map, and two small maps. There are 29 plates, (one in red.) There are 152 Illustrations in all! The Red plate is of the California Snow Plant. It also has the remarkable Artotype by E. Bierstadt of "The Sierras from Glacier Point" opposite page 470. (In later editions this was by Britton & Rey, S.F. not E. Bierstadt.) A feature that Currey & Kruska report to be found only in "a few copies of the first printing." The folding map bears the scarce "Heliotype Printing Co Boston" In the frontispeice, the carriage has no passengers and the shack has no lean-to. This is a rare early copy of the first printing. The back of the book has a bear stamped in profile! Please see the photographs. Farquhar 18b; Currey & Krushka 175.

Fourth printing. xii, 496 pp.; frontispiece and 155 illustrations, including 3 maps (1 folding, 1 full-page, 1 in-text), many full-page plates, including many "photo-typos" printed by Britton & Rey. 1 wood-engraved botanical plate printed in red. This copy with extra plate not included in the list of illustrations; 8vo, publisher's full speckled sheep, morocco lettering pieces, octavo, marbled endpapers. James Mason Hutchings (1820-1902) spent much of his life in and around Yosemite and the high Sierra and was instrumental in promoting Yosemite Valley as a tourist destination. His "In the Heart of the Sierras" was the crowning achievement of his career as a writer and publisher. The extra plate - "The Sierras from Glacier Point", a "photo-typo" by Britton and Rey after a photograph by George Fiske is found at page 470, opposite the correct plate "Key to the High Sierra from Glacier Point Hotel." Currey & Kruska 175; Farquhar 18d. Front joint neatly split from top to bottom though board is held firmly in place by sewing cords and cloth inner hinge, lettering pieces chipped, brief Christmas 1900 gift inscription to back of Hutchings' portrait, else near fine.

First edition of this informative and early travel guide to the Yosemite Valley by the former Forty-Niner, who was a key figure in preserving the Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Big Tree Grove from 1880-1884, where he kept a visitor's hotel. Also included are details on the Yosemite Indian's efforts to stall off gold miners and explorers into the valley, military campaigns, and subsequent removals. See: Currey & Kruska, 175.
