The doctors not only had medical duties but also presided over courts of law on board as they punished wayward emigrants, as meted out by a jury made up of their peers. The doctors saved lives by looking after the daily sanitary and hygiene routines on board. Less than 2% of emigrants were buried at sea because of the efforts of the doctors to control and regulate their civilian populations at sea.
