The paradigm of Industry 4.0 where… digital manufacturing enables the seamless production of goods (and services) and lights out factories where machines and robots effortlessly produce for our future needs and wants are powerful drivers of a capitalist, free market cybertopia. For some radicals, technology and automation produce the conditions for a Fully Automated Luxury Communism, drawing on an interpretation of Marx, where human work would be replaced by a life of leisure and abundance for all. For others, an earlier discourse cybernetics - and the use of AI and social media in communication and co-ordination enable forms of radical organization through anarchist cybernetics . This book questions that technological optimism particularly cybernetics, automation and AI through a critique of these technologies and organizational forms. Cybernetics and corresponding technologies and forms (particularly Industry 4.0) can never capture human forms of creativity and working practices. Furthermore, there are similar problems with the cybernetic paradigm as a radical form of organization or social movement in terms of human autonomy, creativity, desire and social prefiguration. The analysis links these themes by examining the ways in which Gaskell used a complex mix of unstable cultural ideas…to demonstrate the fragility of home and family life and to challenge gendered norms.The analysis of Gaskell s fictional fathers is considered in the context of nineteenth-century debates about the role of fathers within the home. Fathers in Gaskell s stories are presented as a disruptive force, breaking rather than creating a stable, secure family environment. Their behaviour becomes a motivator for travel as an escape from home. Travel also posed a transgressive challenge to the domestic environment and to gendered norms. Women travel writers were particularly vulnerable to accusations of exaggeration and falsehood. By incorporating themes of travel into her fiction, Gaskell was able to produce texts that are arguably richer than more straightforward travel accounts. In the texts discussed, Gaskell explores the ways in which travel, whether undertaken willingly or reluctantly, requires women to negotiate a physical, geographical and emotional space.The short stories examined in this book illustrate Gaskell s narrative hybridity and the ways in which her creative synthesis allows her to subtly challenge existing social and cultural hegemonies. Sub-state recognition occurs when non-sovereign entities, such as regions, cities, or local governments, reco…gnize or support an aspirant state or entity seeking independence or international recognition. Drawing on original empirical data, the book conceptualizes sub-state recognition as a pluriversal diplomatic approach and traces the actors, justifications, and effects in practice. We argue that sub-state recognition manifests as a compensatory and remedial engagement between aspirant states and sub-state entities that shape the dynamics of contested statehood, alter the conservative international recognition regime from the bottom up, and streamline the formation of decentralized approaches to diplomatic recognition. We find that sub-state recognition is a co-constitutive practice that helps aspirant states compensate for the lack of external sovereignty and enables sub-state entities granting such recognition to consolidate their foreign policy identity and regional autonomy. While sub-state recognition does not legally establish anaspirantentity as a state, it may emerge as a crucial symbolic and performative step towards building national consensus for formal recognition by the central government and the international community. Accordingly, the book contributes to expanding and decentring scholarly and policy focus on state recognition by demonstrating that the agency and pathways to diplomatic recognition are more dispersed and decentralized than previously acknowledged. 217 pp. Englisch.

At the heart of music therapy lies a nonverbal phenomenon: shared musical encounter. Those involved can recognise it and respond without words, as insiders . However, what this experience is, and how it relates to evidence, is not widely explored in music therapy practice and research. Furthermore, the investigations which do exist tend to be verbal, even when participants are nonverbal.As an alternative, this autoethnographic book honours the arts-based encounters fundamental to music therapy by offering the reader their own arts-based experience through poems, images, and more. Through them, the reader (or Collaborator ) is invited to consider the other knowing which comes from arts-based encounter, and its value. Using phenomenological and Aesthetic Critical Realist approaches, this work argues that relational, musical experience central to music therapy is valuable on its own terms as musically mediated, therapeutic evidence of personhood. This challenges the professional status quo which privileges verbal knowledge-creation and evidence measured by outsiders. 323 pp. Englisch.
