When Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led the Corps of Discovery on their epic journey across the American West in 1805, they were acting not only as territorial explorers but also as diplomatic emissaries from Jefferson's U, S. government to the Indian peoples they encountered. This fresh examination of the rare and beautiful Native American objects related to the Corps' expedition brilliantly challenges the conventional wisdom about Lewis and Clark and places their journey in the context of a complex process of mutual discovery between representatives of very different cultures. In this book, the author demonstrates that Native Americans were active participants in these historic encounters. Selecting objects of significance to bestow as gifts or use in trade, they skillfully negotiated their own strategic interests in their dealings with the exploring party. McLaughlin and her team of researchers tell a story of Native peoples who were sophisticated traders and cultural brokers already engaged in a global exchange of goods and materials decades before the captains' arrival on the scene. A clean very presentable copy. No International Shipping. Priority mailing will require additional postage. Hillel Burger, photograher (illustratore).

Members of the Values Project research team must carefully examine these materials as they bear upon the internalization of cultural values. They must give special attention to the wide variation in personality that Kaplan discovered in each of the four cultures. Condition: Edge wear, corners bumped else very good.

Assisted by Hermann K Bleibtreu. Papers of the Peabody Museum of American Archaeology and Ethnology, volume LVII, number 2, First edition. Hutterites are an ethnoreligio…us group that is a communal branch of Anabaptists who, like the Amish and Mennonites, trace their roots to the Radical Reformation of the 16th century. The founder of the Hutterites, Jakob Hutter, "established the Hutterite colonies on the basis of the Schleitheim Confession, a classic Anabaptist statement of faith", with the first communes being formed in 1528. Since the death of their eponym Jakob Hutter in 1536, the beliefs of the Hutterites, especially living in a community of goods and absolute pacifism, have resulted in hundreds of years of diaspora in many countries.[2] They embarked on a series of migrations through central and eastern Europe. Nearly extinct by the 18th and 19th centuries, the Hutterites found a new home in North America. Over 130 years, their population recovered from 400 to around 45,000. Today, most Hutterites live in Western Canada and the upper Great Plains of the United States. Condition: Some staple holes in front wrapper else a very good copy.

Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 87 pages with photographs, tables, charts and figures. Quarto (11" x 8 1/2") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. Fist edition. Richly illustrated catalog accompanied the renovated exhibition at Harvard's Peabody Museum. Like the exhibition, the catalog is divided… into three parts: the age of encounter between indigenous and Spanish peoples; the classic Maya; and cultural survival in the contemporary world among the highland Maya of Guatemala, the Kuna people of Panama, and Amazonian societies. The authors present their own synthetic treatments of these subjects, supported by well-selected testimony from the actors themselves, such as Hernando Cortâes, Sahagâun's informants as presented by The Broken Spears, and recorded testimony from contemporary indigenous peoples.
