Amos & Boris Author: William Steig Publisher: Picture Puffin / Puffin Books (Penguin) Publication Date: 1977 ISBN: 0140502297 / 9780140502299 Format: Paperback / Softcover Pages: 32 Condition: Good / Very Good (see detailed description below) Price: [Insert your price here, e.g., £7.50 GBP] + shipping Detailed Description (for AbeBooks listing) Amos & Boris by William Steig - a charming first Puffin paperback edition from 1977 (ISBN 0140502297). This beloved children's classic tells the heartwarming story of an unlikely friendship between Amos, a tiny mouse with a passion for the sea, and Boris, a great whale. After Amos falls overboard during his solo voyage on the Rodent, Boris rescues him, and the two embark on an epic ocean adventure filled with wonder, peril, and profound mutual respect. Steig's tale explores themes of friendship, reciprocity, courage, and the beauty of the natural world with gentle humor and emotional depth. This exact edition matches the iconic Picture Puffin printing: light blue covers with the yellow oval illustration of Amos sailing his boat under a bright sun. The back cover features pricing details for multiple markets (USA, Canada, UK, Australia) and the Puffin logo. Interior pages include the full story with Steig's expressive line drawings and watercolor-style illustrations, copyright information, dedication ("For Maggie and Melinda"), and publisher details confirming the 1977 Puffin release (original 1971 Farrar, Straus & Giroux hardcover). Condition Details: Covers show light edge wear, minor creasing, and some surface rubbing consistent with age and gentle handling (see photos). Spine is intact and uncreased. Pages are clean with no writing, highlighting, or tears. Light tanning to edges typical of 1970s paper. Binding tight; a solid, readable copy suitable for collectors or families. Overall Very Good for a 49-year-old children's paperback. No musty odor or major defects. About the Author & Illustrator - William Steig (1907-2003) William Steig was a prolific American cartoonist, author, and illustrator, widely regarded as one of the greatest creators of children's literature. He began his career contributing cartoons to The New Yorker (over 1,600 published) and later turned to writing and illustrating picture books in his 60s. Steig won the Caldecott Medal for Sylvester and the Magic Pebble (1970) and a Newbery Honor for Abel's Island (1977). His distinctive style features loose, energetic ink lines combined with soft watercolor washes, conveying emotion, whimsy, and character through simple yet masterful drawings. Other beloved titles by Steig include Doctor De Soto, The Amazing Bone, Brave Irene, and Shrek! (which inspired the blockbuster film series). Amos & Boris (1971) is frequently praised as one of his finest works for its elegant storytelling and celebration of inter-species friendship. Steig's books continue to resonate with readers of all ages for their blend of adventure, philosophy, and heart. This 1977 Puffin edition makes an excellent addition to any collection of classic children's literature, Steig fans, or illustrated picture books. A timeless story that has enchanted generations.
