Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. In English and many other languages the name Kon-Tiki is a byword for adventure and the exotic. The journey of the Kon-Tiki from Peru to Polynesia in 1947 became one of the founding myths of the postwar world. In the voyage of six Scandinavians and a parrot on a balsa raft across the Pacifi…c Ocean the classic journey of discovery was re-invented for generations to come. Kon-Tiki spoke of heroism, masculinity, free-spirited rebellion against scientific dogmatism, and the promise of an attainable exotic world, while it updated these mythological staples to fit the times. After years of relentless media exploitation of the 101-day raft journey, Heyerdahl emerged as the protagonist in a legend that helped to create a new postwar West. A Hero for the Atomic Age tells the story of how Heyerdahl organized an expedition to sail a balsa raft from Callao in Peru to the Tuamotu Islands in French Polynesia, and explains how he turned this physical crossing into an epic narrative that became imbued with a universal appeal. The book also addresses the problematic nature of Heyerdahls theory that a white culture-bearing race had initiated all the worlds great civilizations. "First published in 2010 by Peter Lang, Ltd., International Academic Publishers."--Title page verso. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This book presents an analysis of more than 30 plays written by Irish dramatists and poets that are based on the tragedies of Sophocles, Euripides and Aeschylus. These plays proceed from the time of Yeats and Synge through MacNeice and the Longfords on to many of todays leading writers. A s…pecial feature of the book is that, in order to cater for these who may know little about Greek tragedy, it begins with a chapter entitled A Brief Reading of Greek Tragedy, and then, in regard to each Greek play analysed, it presents a mini-essay on that play, before coming to the Irish version(s) of it. Three features of these Irish appropriations stand out. Firstly, there are three methods of using a Greek tragedy: straight translation, which requires us to interrogate the original play; version, which preserves the invariant core of the original, but which can add or subtract material; loose adaptation, which often moves the action into the modern world. Secondly, there is a considerable stress on Sophocles whose emphasis on the theme of recognition resonates in a postcolonial society that must define itself. Thirdly, there is a considerable stress on the experience of women such as Antigone and Medea that can relate to the position of women in Irish society after independence. This book presents an analysis of more than 30 plays written by Irish dramatists and poets that are based on the tragedies of Sophocles, Euripides and Aeschylus. These plays proceed from the time of Yeats and Synge through MacNeice and the Longfords on to many of todays leading writers. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Ours would appear to be an era of unprecedented variation in the mediation of meaning television, computer, the older forms of radio and print. Since, however, such profusion of resources has not of itself guaranteed enhanced profundity or sophistication in our modes of understanding psycho…logical, sociological, philosophical, historical, and theological the issue of the continued relevance of cultural forms, dependent both on the human voice and on ritualization, presents itself for consideration. How may modern people most tellingly relate to such overwhelmingly verbal processes as teaching, be it an erudite lecture or a classroom lesson with infants? Is singing, in the words of Tom Murphy, the only way to tell people who you are? What, in particular, is the contemporary usefulness for the building of societies of one of our oldest and culturally valued rituals, that of drama? The Fourth Seamus Heaney Lectures, Mirror up to Nature: Drama and Theatre in the Modern World, given at St Patricks College, Drumcondra, between October 2006 and April 2007, addressed these and related questions. The gifted play director, Patrick Mason, spoke with exceptional insight on the essence of theatre. Thomas Kilroy, distinguished playwright and critic, dealt with the topic of Irelands contribution to the art of theatre. Two world authorities, Cecily ONeill and Jonothan Neelands, gave inspiring accounts of the rich potential of drama in the classroom. Brenna Katz Clarke, Head of English at St Patricks College, offered a delightful examination of the relationship between drama and film. Finally, John Buckley, internationally acclaimed composer, spoke on opera and its history, while giving an illuminating account of his own Words Upon The Window-Pane. Lecture proceedings including the essence of theatre; Irelands contribution to the art of theatre; the potential of drama in the classroom; the relationship between drama and film; and on opera and its history. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This book aims to provide a comprehensive, but succinct analysis of the tragedies and comedies written by Greek and Roman dramatists. The book is comprehensive in the ways it deals not just with Greek tragedy of the fifth century BCE, but also with Senecas tragedies of the first century CE.… The book also deals with two types of Greek comedy: the comedy of ideas in Aristophanes, and the later social comedy of Menander, this being appropriated in Rome by the comic dramatists Plautus and Terence. The tragedies and comedies of fifth century Athens do not endorse the official ideology of the city. They raise questions about the position of women, the never ending war with Sparta, the nature of religious belief. Crucial here is the depiction by Euripides and by Sophocles of powerful women characters, female intruders who disrupt the male world: Medea, Antigone, Electra, Lysistrata. Comic drama usually concludes on a positive note: with marriage, with plenty of food and drink. This book aims to provide a comprehensive, but succinct analysis of the tragedies and comedies written by Greek and Roman dramatists. The book is comprehensive in the ways it deals not just with Greek tragedy of the fifth century BCE, but also with Senecas tragedies of the first century CE. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. In Timeless Joyce, Asun Lopez-Varela offers a holistic, dense, and substantial approach to the study of Ulysses, in commemoration of its publication centenary. The author manages to tackle multiple perspectives that pivot around key aspects of Joyces narrative by structuring her account aro…und the spiral figure. This brilliant design makes it possible to include not only detailed thematic studies, but also to recurrently return to the main research lines proposed, in an easy, smooth, and natural way. Especially relevant are the myth cells revisited, with a perceptive method that allows transcendental appreciation without forgetting the language puns, the metaphysical substratum, and the Joycean ironic groundwork.(Juan Ignacio Oliva Cruz, President of the James Joyce Association of Spain)Lopez-Varelas volume deserves attention not only for the accumulation of new analytical threads but also for the inspiring spiral framework that shows Joyces ironic deflective response to the grandiloquent inflation of epic, traditionally performed by myth. The author superbly shows the ambiguities present in Joyces mythical method, where the spatial and temporal restrictions proper of the vicissitudes of everyday life are simultaneously parodied and given transcendental scope.(Jose Manuel Losada Goya, President of Asteria, Internacional Association of Mythcriticism)2022 marked the 100th anniversary of the publication of James Joyces Ulysses. This book is a celebration of Joyces text and of the aspects that make his masterpiece timeless. Structured under the inspiration of Brancusis spiral image, Symbol of James Joyce, the volume shows Joyces play in two movements: a centripetal move towards unity, using myth, analogies and correspondences and a centrifugal force, with a cunning mixture of irony and unanticipated turns, where the dream of unity is shattered and the text resonates in multiple directions, manifesting its diversity through forms of duplicity and double coding. The double spiral movement of Joyces novel is aimed at contrasting diverse perspectives on existential issues as well as religious, political and even gender aspects. Features such as Joyces mytho-poetics, the future of nostalgia, temporal becoming, coincidentia oppositorum, apophatic theology and philosophies of the occult are explored as part of an allegorical dimension of myth that simultaneously seeks and refuses holistic unity. Readers are involved in a sort of rite of passage, like Odysseus in his perilous journey, forced to read forwards, backwards and vertically in the fractal structure of the novel through which Joyce achieves its poetics of infinity. This book is a celebration of Joyces text and of the aspects that make his masterpiece timeless. The volume is structured under the inspiration of Brancusis spiral image, "Symbol of James Joyce". Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
