Jahrhundert als Achtes Weltwunder. Von den Bauplänen ist nichts erhalten geblieben, und so stellt sich die Frage, wie der Wunderbau entworfen worden ist. Volker Hoffmann und Nikolaos Theocharis haben in mehrjähriger Forschungsarbeit eine Antwort auf diese Frage gesucht. Diese präsentieren sie mit 42 Plakaten erstmals 2005 an einer Ausstellung in Istanbul einem breiteren Publikum. Sie belegen, dass die Architekten von einer einzigen Entwurfsfigur (die zugleich «Weltmodell» ist) ausgegangen sind: von einem Quadrat mit einem In- und Umkreis. Daraus wurden streng geometrisch drei weitere Entwurfsfiguren entwickelt und aus ihnen - wiederum konsequent geometrisch - sowohl der Grundriss als auch der Aufriss des Kirchenbaus gewonnen. Neben der Rekonstruktion des Entwurfsverfahrens werden neue Einsichten in das konstruktive Denken der Architekten, die Veränderung des Bauwerkes nach 558, die griechische Mathematik und in das Zusammenspiel mit der Kosmologie mitgeteilt. In this study, Burrows draws on social psychological research into the cognitive and socio-motivational components of stereotyping to explore the forces underlying the creation and development of the fabliau priest. Through an assessment of the constituent elements of the figure against a background of a range of literary and historical sources, Burrows demonstrates that the literary figure is the product of the specific socio-historical context of contemporaneous changes in relationships between Church and laity in which anticlerical stereotyping, in a manner comparable to other instances of outgroup derogation, can be attributed to a quest for positive social identity and ingroup solidarity on the part of an inscribed lay audience. 270 pp. Englisch.

Differentialist identities, multi-level consociational accommodation, and corporatist intermediation are typical features of this region's «consensual politics», and the process of European integration adds further to this complexity. These forms of consensual politics are challenged today by large and persistent populist parties that express strong anti-elitist sentiments, local identities, and Euro-sceptic attitudes. The book examines the defensive reaction of populist parties to the perceived threats of open borders (multi-culturalism and cheap labour) and elite negotiations (at all levels of governance). Protest attitudes translate into alternative views of European integration favouring proposals for an anti-assimilationist and labour protective «Fortress», as well as a religiously-based «Europe of the People». The book considers the possibility of a potential cleavage in the incipient European party system through alliances of «losers of integration» cutting across the left-right alignment and overlapping with ethno-linguistic, centre-periphery, religious, and rural-urban factors that survived in the Alpine region more than elsewhere.
