Based on empirical work throughout, the individual contributions to this volume address lingua franca communication f…rom sociolinguistic as well as from conversation analytic perspectives, or place this form of communication within the wider context of foreign language teaching. The volume as a whole attempts to broaden the traditional view of lingua francas as languages employed by non-native speakers to serve specific, restricted communicative purposes only. Instead, it is demonstrated that lingua francas have gained a number of varied functions, and that they are employed by a heterogeneous group of speakers for whom they do not always have the same status of a second or foreign language. The papers reveal intriguing similarities in form across different lingua francas, but also point at significant differences. As a result, it is proposed that approaches to teach lingua francas as such need to be developed on the basis of empirical evidence. 308 pp. Englisch.

In contrast, this book presents a systematic analysis of factors that influence the individual lobbying decisions of Multinat…ional Companies and their use of certain routes of access to EU institutions. In the first part, it addresses the seemingly trivial question of why business has to focus even more intensively on its lobbying activities in the policy-making processes of the European Union than on its lobbying efforts in national processes. The second part then demonstrates theoretically that certain institutional and sectoral characteristics provide a good explanatory framework for the decisions of Multinational Companies concerning the most promising lobbying strategy. In emergency situations, the lobbying activities of large companies will be re-transferred from the supranational to the national level. Eventually, all alternative hypotheses that are presented throughout the book are tested empirically by a thorough examination of the case of the Directive on end-of-life vehicles. 200 pp.

Though variation exists and gratuitious changes can be found, an in-depth study clearly suggests that on the whole linguistic features have developed under two sets of selections pressures: the pressure to reduce the neuromuscular cost, and the concomitant pressure to find ever-more functional alternatives. Moving on from language to writing, the author argues that the observed optimalization process also applies to the evolution of writing from hieroglyphs to alphabets. But how can something that cannot be represented be remembered or witnessed This book is an analysis of the history of various sorts of representation, chiefly memorials, on the site of the concentration camps Dachau and Buchenwald in comparison with Auschwitz, Yad Vashem and the US Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC. By providing a reconstruction of the history and debates surrounding the question of memorializing and forgetting, it interrogates the question of how to represent the unrepresentable. It is a study of how the boundaries of representation and the rhetoric of artifacts changed during the transformation of these places.
