Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. 1st Edition. Offered is a first edition, first printing, of the novel "Then Upon the Evil Season" written by Noel Virtue and published in 1988 by Peter Owen out of London, England. A hardcover with dust jacket, measuring 5-1/2" by 8-3/4" and containing 160 pages. From the inside front dust jacket, reading in part, "The central character of this new novel, also set in New Zealand, is Lubin, a cheerful, outgoing, seventeen-year-old optimist, ready for almost any eventuality. Lubin was found abandoned as an infant, rather like Moses in the bulrushes, by an itinerant, impecunious couple called Adin and Effie Croft, who eagerly adopted him. Adin, dubbed the Evangelist, scraped a living as a bush Baptist, hawking his tract 'A Joy to Walk with Jesus' with mixed success in various parts of the country. Yet his driving impulse, it transpires, was less spiritual than carnal. When the present story begins, Adin is already dead but not quite safely buried, and Effie has moved with Lubin to make a fresh start in the remote sea-shore community of Oponi. Here an orphaned dolphin has become the centre of attraction, if not something of a cult, drawing visitors from far and wide. A series of bizarre, blackly humorous events take place, entangling both Effie and Lubin, not to mention an engaging Maori boy called Pita and a tame emu, Dorothy. And the dolphin." Fine in Fine dust jacket. The dust jacket is protected in a removable Brodart Plasti-Kleer mylar archival cover. …

Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Paperback Printing. Paperback. Sir Rhodes Boyson is one of the Conservative Party's 'more colouful figures' (The Times). In this autobiography he writes frankly of his socialist background and the highlights of a distinguished career in education and as a poilitican. His father was a spinner and a trade union official. His mother came from farming stock. A bright pupil at school, his career after university and service in the Royal Navy led him to a series of headmasterships, including that of Highbury Grove School from 1966 to 1974, which established him as a force to be reckoned with in education. He left the Labour Party in 1964 and joined the Conservative Party in 1968. In 1974 he was elected Conservative Member for Brent Noth, and subsequent appointments in the Thatcher government included four years as an education minister, and the portfolios of Social Security and Northern Ireland. He went to the DOE, in charge of loval government, in 1986. Sir Rhodes has given his party unswerving loyalty, while remaining an independent figure, outspoken on controversial issues. He remains essentially a man of the people, as readers of his stimulating book, now reissued as a paperback, will discover for themselves. 255 pp.(We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).…

Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Uk Tranlation Edition. Paperback. The Reverse Side of Life. Translated From the Korean by Yoo-Jung Kong. Bak Bugil's father is a genius. Everyone expects him to pass the civil service examination and become a judge - except that he hasn't been seen since he left to study in Seoul. Bak lives with his mother and his father's relatives. In this partially autobiographical novel, the author explores his roots. A theology student, he mixes together the notion of original sin rooted in the subconsciou and its accompanying sense of insecurity, as well as the idea of a distant God who only occasionally extends a helping hand, to reveal how the conflict of the secular and the divine manifests itself in the real world. This extraordinary novel - the first modern Korean novel to be translated into French and one of only a handful available in English - cemented its author's reputation as one of the stars of South Korea's literary scene. 208 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).…

Cloth. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st English Translation Edition. Hardback. Tiny nip to top edge of D/J. Translated From the Norwegian and with a Foreword by Janet Garton. This book is an imaginative tour de force in which the reader becomes absorbed in the mental universe of a frustrated, middle-aged spinster and yet is made aware, often through subtle humour, that her view is partial, and at times plain wrong. The story is recounted in Maude's language, with her obsessive concern for the minutiae of existence and refined distate for vulgarity. And yet her reflections are saturated with the sexuality she has denied herself for so long; she is overwhelmed by the thrusting, pulsating life force that surrounds her. All of which drives her towards a climax of ultimate fulfilment and catastrophe. 208 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).…

Cloth. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. First Edition. In Across the Acheron Monique Witting, prize-winning author of some rightly acclaimed novels, describes an extraordinary journey through the infernal regions towards a paradisaical land. Angles ride motor cycles and cruelty and suffering are unknown on the other side of the Acheron, the legendary river of sorrows. Witting's guide is not Virgil, as in Dante's version of the theme, but a woman called Manastabal. Hell and Purgatory are located in the vicinity of San Francisco, which is depicted as a bizarre city full of fantastic creatures. Here surreal incidents take place such as the parade of lost souls in torment, a harrowing procession of women who have been abused by men. Monique Witting relates her poetic, sometimes humorous story in a vivid and highly individual style, creating a kaleidoscopic mixture of the mythological and the modern. It confirms her position as one of France's most original and gifted contemporary writers. Translated from the French by David Le Vay in collaboration with Margaret Crosland.(We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.).…
