The aim is to bring together, in a balanced approach, theory and d…ata for the purpose of developing a practical state-of-the-art tool for policy analysis. The modelling approach adopted is motivated by the recent trend in economy-wide modelling to combine the respective strengths of traditional CGE models and modern macroeconomic models. Traditional CGE models typically provide a dissagregate representation of the economy at a single point in time. Such models are useful for analysing issues involving the allocation of resources among the various agents identified at a particular point in time. Modern macroeconomic models, on the other hand, usually provide an aggregate representation of the economy over many points in time. Such models are useful for analysing issues involving the allocation of resources across time. A model that combines the strengths of static CGE models and modern macro-dynamic models is amenable to addressing a wide range of policy issues. Many social scientists from the fields of economics, sociology, psychology and other disciplines now use computer simulations to… study a wide range of social phenomena. The availability of powerful personal computers, the development of multidisciplinary approaches and the use of artificial intelligence models have all contributed to this development. The benefits of using computer simulations in the social sciences are obvious. This holds true for the use of simulations as tools for theory building and for its implementation as a tool for sensitivity analysis and parameter optimization in application-oriented models. In both, simulation provides powerful tools for the study of complex social systems, especially for dynamic and multi-agent social systems in which mathematical tractability is often impossible. The graphical display of simulation output renders it user friendly to many social scientists that lack sufficient familiarity with the language of mathematics. The present volume aims to contribute in four directions: (1) To examine theoretical and methodological issues related to the application of simulations in the social sciences. By this we wish to promote the objective of designing a unified, user-friendly, simulation toolkit which could be applied to diverse social problems. The processing and analysis of images is no exception to this rule. In the classical image analysis paradigm…, the first step is nearly always some sort of segmentation process in which the image is divided into (hopefully, meaningful) parts. It was pointed out nearly 30 years ago by Prewitt (1] that the decisions involved in image segmentation could be postponed by regarding the image parts as fuzzy, rather than crisp, subsets of the image. It was also realized very early that many basic properties of and operations on image subsets could be extended to fuzzy subsets; for example, the classic paper on fuzzy sets by Zadeh [2] discussed the 'set algebra' of fuzzy sets (using sup for union and inf for intersection), and extended the defmition of convexity to fuzzy sets. These and similar ideas allowed many of the methods of image analysis to be generalized to fuzzy image parts. For are cent review on geometric description of fuzzy sets see, e. g. , [3]. Fuzzy methods are also valuable in image processing and coding, where learning processes can be important in choosing the parameters of filters, quantizers, etc. 591 pp. Englisch.

In den letzten Jahren sind im Rahmen von Dissertationsprojekten die Arbeiten von Leithner [1992], Haverka…mp [1993], Büh1er [1995], Tob1er [1996], Henn [1997], Heinz1 [1998] und Ammann [1998] entstanden. Als Grund für diesen Forschungsschwerpunkt kann sicherlich angeführt werden, dass die Bewertung von Derivaten insgesamt eine besondere Faszination im Rahmen der Finanzmarkttheorie ausstrahlt. Das im Rahmen der Optionspreistheorie entwickelte Konzept der arbitragefreien Bewertung von Finanzanlagen, unterscheidet sich durch die Präferenzfreiheit von der traditionellen Gleichgewichtsbewertung oder der Mean / Variance Be wertung. Damit wird die Bewertung von Finanzinstrumenten möglich, ohne Nutzenfunktionen zu spezifizieren. Die Spezifikation der Nutzenfunktion ist in der traditionellen Bewertungstheorie ein dominanter Schwachpunkt bezüglich des Einsatzes in der Praxis, denn das Konzept der Nutzenfunktion ist recht ab strakt: Welcher Investor weiss schon, ob er eher eine logarithmische oder eine exponentielle Nutzenfunktion hat. Obwohl die arbitragefreie Bewertung die Spezifikation einer Nutzenfunktion überflüssig macht, sind Annahmen bezüg lich der Präferenzen der Individuen dennoch implizit in den Modellannahmen enthalten. Breeden und Litzenberger [1978], Zimmermann [1998] und Franke, Stapelton, Subrahmanyam [1997] decken auf, dass die Annahmen bezüglich der Verteilung der Wertpapiere, Präferenzen implizieren. Der Charme der Arbitra gefreiheits-Modelle liegt deshalb weniger im Verzicht auf Präferenzannahmen, sondern vielmehr in einer intuitiveren Darstellung. Die genannten Arbeiten, die in den letzten Jahren an der Universität St. Gallen publiziert wurden, zeichnen sich durch eine starke Betonung der theoretischen Grundlagen der Zinsstrukturmodelle aus. 246 pp. Deutsch.
