Communities of agents not only share a common language but also the individual conceptualizations of the world (real and abstract) have to overlap to a significant extent, allowing for efficient reference to whole conceptual structures like 'the German constitution', 'game theory' or 'medical sciences'. For 'societies' of interacting technical devices or software agents the situation is not quite as Babylonian since although these agents are meant to act individually (and also have a private state and private knowledge) in most cases they are designed to refer to one common ontology or standardized protocol and thus do not have to deal with misunderstanding. However, the more these systems become interconnected, the more this situation resembles the one described for societies of human agents even though the misunderstanding might be easier to detect when the different reference ontologies are made explicit and published. Obviously, in both cases standardization of a common language or set of rules for interaction reduces the individual degree of freedom for the sake of compatibility and benefits derived from interaction. In his work, Falk Graf von Westarp addresses the software market as a domain strongly depending on compatibility effects of the individuals' decisions. 208 pp. Englisch.

Soft Computing (SC) consists of several computing paradigms, including fuzzy logic, neural networks, and genetic algor…ithms, which can be used to produce powerful hybrid intelligent systems. Fractal theory provides us with the mathematical tools to understand the geometrical complexity of natural objects and can be used for identification and modeling purposes. Combining SC techniques with fractal theory, we can take advantage of the 'intelligence' provided by the computer methods and also take advantage of the descriptive power of the fractal mathematical tools. Industrial manufacturing systems can be considered as non-linear dynamical systems, and as a consequence can have highly complex dynamic behaviors. For this reason, the need for computational intelligence in these manufacturing systems has now been well recognized. We consider in this book the concept of 'intelligent manufacturing' as the application of soft computing techniques and fractal theory for achieving the goals of manufacturing, which are production planning and control, monitoring and diagnosis of faults, and automated quality control. As a prelude, we provide a brief overview of the existing methodologies in Soft Computing. We then describe our own approach in dealing with the problems in achieving intelligent manufacturing. Jahrhundert' reagiert, die 1995 startete. 1m Rahmen dieser Initiative hat der Forderbereich 'Dienstleistungen' eine wichtige Rolle; der DLR-Projekttriiger Arbeitsgestaltung und Dienstleistungen nimmt hier u. a. wissenschaftliche und administrative Management-und Control lingaufgaben wahr. 1m Zeitraum von 1998 bis 2001 wurden im Bereich der Dienstleistungs forderung insgesamt sieben Bekanntrnachungen verOffentlicht, wobei beim Pro jekttriiger dazu tiber 850 Projektskizzen eingereicht wurden. Themenfelder waren beispielsweise wissensintensive Dienstleistungen, Benchmarking oder Finanz dienstleistungen. Pro Jahr sind bisher mehr als 200 Einzelvorhaben mit einer Summe von insgesamt ca. 60 Mio. ¿ gefordert worden. Die im Rahmen der Dienstleistungsinitiative gefOrderten Vorhaben zu virtuel len Untemehmen gehen auf die Bekanntmachung 'Arbeitsorganisation, Manage ment und Tertiarisierung' vom 21. August 1998 zurUck.
