In addition, papers from the Panel Discussion: Impact of Mathematics in Science, Technology and Economics are included. Jürgen Lehn was born on the 28th of April, 1941 in Karlsruhe. From 1961 to 1968 he studied mathematics in Freiburg and Karlsruhe, and obtained a Diploma in Mathematics from the University of Karlsruhe in 1968. He obtained his Ph.D. at the University of Regensburg in 1972, and his Habilitation at the University of Karlsruhe in 1978. Later in 1978, he became a C3 level professor of Mathematical Statistics at the University of Marburg. In 1980 he was promoted to a C4 level professorship in mathematics at the TUD where he was a researcher until his death. 248 pp. Englisch.

In the 1970s, the Neo-Austrian Capital Theo…ry was developed using the fundamental laws of thermodynamics as a common language between the natural and social sciences. Niemes (1981) integrated the dynamic and irreversibility characteristics of the natural environment into the Neo-Austrian c- ital theory. Faber et al. (1983, 1987, 1995) then extended this interdisciplinary approach further to create a comprehensive, dynamic, environmental resource model. Over the last 3 decades, the theoretical foundations of environmental economics have been modi ed and there have been an impressive variety of applications. This book aims to reduce the gaps between economic theory, natural sciences, and engineering practice. One of the reasons these gaps exist is because economic assumptions are used to construct dynamic environmental and resource models, which are not consistent with the fundamental laws of the natural sciences. Another reason for the gap might be the distance between academic theory and real world situations. Based on an extended thermodynamic approach, the authors explain which economic assumptions are acceptable for constructing a dynamic model that is consistent with the natural sciences. In particular, the special role of water in the production and reproduction activities will be considered as an integral component. 232 pp. Englisch.

In some cases one should use instead of the term formula more suitable terms of the type method, p- cedure or algorithm since the corresponding calculations cannot be simply summed up to a single expression, and a verbal description without introducing complicated symbols is more appropriate. The survey has the following ambitions: - The formulas should be applicable in practice: it has motivated their choice for this survey rst and foremost. On the other hand it is obvious that by time one puts to use in practice seemingly very abstract formulas of higher mathematics, e.g. when pricing nancial derivatives, evaluating nancial risks, applying accou- ing principles based on fair values, choosing alternative risk transfers ARL in insurance, and the like. - The formulas should be error-free (though such a goal is not achievable in full) since in the nancial and insurance framework one publishes sometimes in a h- tic way various untried formulas and methods that may be incorrect. The majority of attendees were from Italy, which would be expected for a meeting of the Italian Chapter of AIS. Examples of revitali- tion of railway station areas can be found throughout Europe, for example in countries like England (Liverpool), France (Euralille), Germany (Berlin) and the Netherlands (Amsterdam South Axis). The dynamics of revitali- tion of railway station areas can best be understood by combining the - sights of several disciplines; economics, and spatial sciences being the most important disciplines. This book therefore addresses the subject from a multi-disciplinary perspective. Railway station area redevelopment projects try to cope with the - creased lack of interoperability and interconnectivity between infrastr- tures and boost the local/regional economy by creating a new high quality multifunctional urban landscape at the same time. The majority of attendees were from Italy, which would be expected for a meeting of the Italian Chapter of AIS. However, as much as 30% of participants came from elsewhere, from other parts of Europe to be sure, but also from as far away as Nigeria, Mexico and Australia.
