The titles were widely read for their catholic taste in travel, sports, adventure, natural history and society. The most popular titles were "Cassell's Magazine" and "The Windsor Magazine" and each published original fiction in serializations which ensured a regular core of faithful readers. We have captured the period feel of the originals in this modern re~presentation by retaining the original setting and the superb illustrations, Maurice Greiffenhagen's rendering of the adventures of "Ayesha" are particularly outstanding. Rider Haggard had already secured a worthwhile following from his earlier works when these two classic adventures were first published, the first novel to bring critical acclaim was "King Solomon's Mines" (1885) and this was followed, two years later, by "She". This selection features "Ayesha the return of She" a less well known but equally exciting sequel, and "Benita" one of a group of powerful sagas based on and set in the dark continent much beloved by the Victorian Empire builders of those times. Haggard acquired a very wide knowledge of Africa and its people, serving with sir Theo Shepstone's staff in South Africa prior to the retrocession of 1881, and had in fact raised the flag at the annexation in 1877. Haggard was also a farmer of some wide experience and served on several Government commissions connected with agricultural matters, it was this work rather than for his writing which won him a knighthood in 1912. He wrote two enduring tomes on the land', "A Farmer's Year" (1899) and "Rural England" (2 Vols, 1902). He completed his two volume autobiography in 1924, and died in London on May 14th the following year.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. Various (illustratore). Reprint. 700 grammes; XXIV, 238 pages, last 2 blank, list of illustrations, introduction by editor, filmography and bibliography. The text is illustrated with black-and-white photography, black-and-white illustrations -- both contemporary and modern, and black-and-white film stills. Grey coloured boards. The major fault with the book is the cheap paper used in production, which has caused significant browning to the paper edges and to the internal pages as well. Illustrated dustwrapper, showing a paddle steamer, against a dull green background and black writing on the front panel and spine. Very light creasing of the top and bottom dustwrapper edges. This book is a chronologically arranged selection of Mark Twain's writing, showing how misanthropy and disillusionment becomes less and less concealed in his writings as he grew older. Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. Reprint. VII, 232 pages, last three pages blank, includes bibliography, index of names, arms and devices, text illustrated in black-and-white, and colour plates. Aside from minor rubbing of the edges of the jacket, and previous owner's name on half title page, the book is in very good order. This book is a lavishly illustrated and extensively research study of the complex rules and customs governing the international subject of heraldry. Scholarly in depth, yet wide and readable in its approach, this book shows why the popularity of family heraldry is increasing and why the subject continues to arouse such interest. In an informative text, and in the detailing cross-reference captions to 1250 illustrations, over 150 in colour, the author brings his knowledge to be on every aspect of heraldry. Using his own illustrations, he discusses the differences in heroic style between the countries in Europe, and also shows how these differences affect those countries where heraldry has been introduced by migrating or colonising Europeans. .
