An historical novel about the Japanese Buddhist sage, Shinran Shonin (1173-1263) , who is considered the founder of Shin Buddhism (Jodo Shinshu). It is extremely well written, vivid, flowing, and is an impassioned and realistic account with full details that present life in Shinran's time and what it must have been like for him to encounter the teachings of Honen, who taught the Nembutsu-only school. The core of the book is Shinran's adolescence and early adulthood of continuous frustration and anxiety over what he felt were his complete failings at attaining purity and awakening through stringent Tendai Buddhist practices as a monk. When he encountered Honen's teaching, he was at the end of his rope, discouraged and suicidal. Honen taught that enlightenment does not come through one's own effort but through the other power of Amida Buddha, by a practice of chanting the Nembutsu ("I take refuge in Amida Buddha" or, in Japanese, Namu Amida Butsu). ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 329 pages; Signed by Author.
