The core of the book is Shinran's adolescence and early adulthood of continuous frustration and anxiety over what he felt were his complete failings at attaining purity and awakening through stringent Tendai Buddhist practices as a monk. When he encountered Honen's teaching, he was at the end of his rope, discouraged and suicidal.
