Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. 1st. Pictorial boards, 175 pages, illustrations (some colour); 25 cm. Firm binding, clean inside copy. *** "Photographers who use digital technologies as tools for creative expression are driving the most exciting and transformative developments in today's photography. Digital photographic and imaging technologies are the most recent development in an art and science whose history is one of constant technological innovation. Using sophisticated software and scanners, artists are able to enhance or alter photographs, and create mesmerizing effects. Focusing exclusively on digital photography, Sylvia Wolf explores a medium that challenges our notions of the role of the artist and of an image's relationship to the real. Taking readers from the earliest experiments in digital photography to the latest innovations, Wolf offers a historical perspective and points to future trends. The work of a global panoply of artists, including Ida Applebroog, Sheila Pree Bright, Peter Campus, Xing Danwen, Joan Fontcuberta, Tom Friedman, Andreas Gursky, Martina Lopez, Loretta Lux, Mary Mattingly, Wendy McMurdo, Andreas Maller-Pohle, Thomas Ruff, Lucas Samaras, and Jeff Wall, demonstrates how diverse and complex the field has become. This expert survey offers a riveting snapshot of a medium that is changing the way we look at pictures and the world." - Publisher. Size: 8vo. Collectible. …

Condizione: Very Good. 288 pages. Softcover. Very clean, like new in publishers shrink-wrap. This book pays tribute to the mature work of Stuart Davis, a distinctly American artist who adapted European modernism to reflect the sights, sounds, and rhythms of popular culture. Beginning in 1921, a series of creative breakthroughs led Davis away from figurative painting and toward a more abstract expression of the world he inhabited. Drawing upon his admiration for Cézanne, Léger, Picasso, and Seurat, Davis developed a style that would evolve over the next four decades to become a dominant force in postwar art. His visionary responses to modern life and culture both high and low remain relevant more than 50 years after his death. Focusing on the images and motifs that became hallmarks of his career, this book features approximately 100 works?from his paintings of tobacco packages of the early 1920s, the abstract Egg Beater series, and the WPA murals of the 1930s, to the majestic works of his last two decades. The authors take a critical approach to the development of Davis's art and theory, paying special attention to the impact his earlier work had upon his later masterpieces. They also discuss Davis?s unique ability to assimilate the lessons of Cubism as well as the imagery of popular culture, the aesthetics of advertising, and the sounds and rhythms of jazz?his great musical passion. Informed by previously unpublished primary documents, the detailed chronology is, in effect, the first Davis biography. Together, these elements create a vital portrait of an artist whose works hum with intelligence and energy. Record # 353369.…

Hardcover. Aqua stamped cloth, beige & color illus. dust jacket, 160 pp., many color illus. Issued in conjunction with a 2014 exhibition. "Edgar Degas's influence upon Mary Cassatt has long been acknowledged, but her role in shaping his artistic production and in preparing the way for his warm reception in America is fully examined here for the first time. These two major figures of the impressionist movement shared a keen observer's eye and an openness to experimentation. With a focus on the critical period from the late 1870s through the mid-1880s when they were most closely allied, this volume brings together some seventy works in a variety of media -- oil paintings, pastels, and works on paper (etchings, lithographs, monotypes, and drawings) -- to illustrate the artistic dialogue that developed between them. Drawing from the National Gallery of Art's exceptionally rich holdings as well as loans from both public and private lenders, [this book] builds upon groundbreaking technical analysis to present new insights into these artists' approaches. Theirs was a dialogue grounded in commonalities and subtle variations, as each embraced experimentation and unconventional materials with aplomb." (dj). VG (Two words written in pen on FFEP).…

Hardcover. Quarto. Hardcover. Bound in yellow cloth with illustrated jacket. 172 pages : illustrations (some color) ; 31 cm. "Richard Lindner (1901-1978), a German-born refugee from Nazi oppression who settled in New York, created a bold and deeply disturbing body of work completely at odds with that city's vanguard of the 195Os. A former commercial artist, Lindner drew on personal memory and his emigre cultural heritage to fashion images of a bizarre and lurid humanity. Grotesque children, automaton couples, and denizens of the urban underworld populate his canvases. While his bold, precision-tooled figurative paintings found an appreciative audience in the 196Os with the advent of Pop Art, Lindner nonetheless remained a resolutely independent artist whose paintings speak to the alienation and moral crises of this century and evoke the absurdity of the human condition." "Richard Lindner: Paintings and Watercolors, 1948-1977 includes 73 oil paintings and watercolors in full color, some of which have never before been exhibited or published. The book is based on the first exhibition of Lindner's work in a generation, organized by the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, which reexamines Lindner's life and traces the unfolding thematic content of his art from the late 194Os until his death in 1978. Essays are by organizing curator Judith Zilczer, Curator of Paintings at the Hirshhorn Museum, and Peter Selz, Professor Emeritus of the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Zilczer explores the biographical and cultural sources for Lindner's figurative symbolism, while Professor Selz analyzes Lindner's controversial images of women."--BOOK JACKET. VG. The book offers a continuous narrative of contributions by both European and American surrealist artists from the early 1920s through the late 1940s. Artists from France, Germany, Britain, Spain, Switzerland, and the United States established Surrealism as transnational from the outset. Key artists who incorporated found objects in their works include Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Salvador Dali, Hans Bellmer, and Joseph Cornell. The biomorphists encompass Jean Arp, Max Ernst, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Isamu Noguchi. In addition, Alberto Giacometti, Alexander Calder and David Smith, are highlighted for their game-changing innovations that influenced the evolution of modern sculpture. Nearly two hundred illustrations and a selection of historical texts accompany the insightful essay and chronology by Valerie J. Fletcher. Fans of Surrealism and those new to the genre will appreciate this book's in-depth approach to its innovative and influential three-dimensional masterpieces." - Publisher. *** CONTENTS: 1. Additional shipping charges may be requested for international & priority orders. *** "Timely and wide-ranging, this volume explores in-depth the theme of destruction in international contemporary art. While destruction as a theme can be traced throughout art history, from the early atomic age it has remained a pervasive and compelling element of contemporary visual culture. Damage Control features the work of more than 40 international artists working in a range of media--painting, sculpture, photography, film, installation, and performance--who have used destruction as a means of responding to their historical moment and as a strategy for inciting spectacle and catharsis, as a form of rebellion and protest, or as an essential part of re-creation and restoration. Including works by such diverse artists as Jean Tinguely, Andy Warhol, Bruce Conner, Yoko Ono, Gordon Matta-Clark, Pipilotti Rist, Yoshitomo Nara, and Laurel Nakadate, the book reaches beyond art to enable a broader understanding of culture and society in the aftermath of World War II, under the looming fear of annihilation in the atomic age, and in the age of terrorism and other disasters, real and imagined." - Publisher. *** CONTENTS: Radiation made visible, by Kerry Brougher; The show is over, by Russell Ferguson; Sixty years of ambivalence, by Dario Gamboni.
