Second Chances: The Transformative Relationship Between Incarcerated Youth and Shelter Dogs recounts the story of Project POOCH (Positive Opportunities-Obvious Change with Hounds), a program that united incarcerated boys with unwanted dogs from animal shelters. Both the boys and the dogs were considered undesirable, and few had found love in their lives. As a result of the project, the lives of many youths and dogs changed forever. The project faced many challenges. The correctional facility administrators needed much convincing before approval was given to start the onsite program with one boy and one dog. At one point, Dalton sold her house to keep the project funded. However, since 1993, over 95 percent of the youths have not returned to corrections once their sentence was served. Some of the boys have gone on to college, and all have been gainfully employed. The POOCH dogs learned basic obedience and went on to become beloved family pets; some even became companion dogs to autistic children, people with physical impairments, and war veterans diagnosed with PTSD. Dalton's own story starts with a family background where her dogs were killed for minor behavioral problems, and leads to teaching incarcerated youth that they deserve unconditional love, first demonstrated by the transformational connection with canines.

This was one of the major inland marshes in the country before landowners drained it for farmland. Changing Landscapes of Northwest Indiana examines the massive ecological devastation caused by the destruction of Beaver Lake, the channelization of the Kankakee River, and the draining of the Kankakee Marsh. The book traces early efforts to drain the marsh, leading to the successful completion of the project in the twentieth century, and covers the problems that still exist today. The consequences were immense and extended beyond the struggle by conservationists to restore or preserve portions of the marsh. The loss of the marsh fostered a century of flooding in the Kankakee Valley and caused decades of conflict with Illinois, which shares the Kankakee River with Indiana. To this day there are ongoing attempts to manage flooding on the river, and residents of Illinois continue to claim that channelization caused severe environmental problems in their state. Serious and lasting environmental problems have proved intractable. The citizens of Indiana-and their government-made profound and irreversible choices about managing a vast wetland and a river within the state's borders. The story of the conversion of the Kankakee Marsh to farmland is an object lesson in the manifold problems that arise from the imperatives of unrestrained environmental exploitation.

Lowell Stewart Hardin (1917-2015), an Indiana farm boy who became an enormously influential international agriculturalist, made the world a better place for the poor and the hungry on this earth. For seventeen years he led the Ford Foundation's agricultural development efforts, contributing to the Green Revolution. He helped to found and guide international agriculture research centers in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. He inspired others to get involved and opened doors for them. He taught by example, gave others credit, and always stepped back, avoiding the limelight himself. In this volume, twenty-two people who knew him well share stories of Lowell, and lessons they learned from this extraordinary mentor and wonderful human being.

Although the Bell System, with many Nobel Prizes, is justly acknowledged for its technical prowess, it should also be recognized for its early and considerable impact on the developing discipline of industrial design. In 1930, young Henry Dreyfuss, who would later become known as a pioneer of industrial design, was retained by the Bell System as a design consultant and matured in that environment. With substantial input from Bell System engineers, Dreyfuss and his staff produced attractive telephone designs that were manufactured and installed in more than one hundred million American homes and copied around the world. Featuring over one hundred illustrations, Bell Telephone System's Preeminent Role in the Growth of Industrial Design is a deep dive into the development and evolution of the corded telephone. A detailed case study of an object that would become so ubiquitous and commonplace, it is also the story writ large of the establishment and importance of the field of industrial design.

From essential life necessities such as water to everyday commodities and products including locally sourced foods, this book covers a variety of topics and invites readers to examine a diverse range of markets through a reflective lens. By revisiting past market dynamics and real-world examples, readers are encouraged to rethink how preferences are formed, how opinions shift over time, and how value is assigned-sometimes in unexpected ways. What insights might you gather from a deeper understanding of local and global markets, markets for water, or even markets for something you may have never considered valuable, such as carbon? Markets We Thought We Knew challenges assumptions and inspires fresh thinking about marketplaces, both near and far.

Initially conceived as a workaround related to the crisis precipitated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting lockdown of 2020, Interactive Synchronous HyFlex reimagines an active-learning, team-based classroom, making it possible for any student to participate fully, whether they are seated in the back row or joining from elsewhere in the world. Developed and refined by the authors through five years of classroom experimentation and National Science Foundation-funded research, this forward-facing approach-which refers to online synchronous hybrid delivery and combines the terms "hybrid" and "flexible"-brings together learners in a single classroom who have the daily option of meeting face-to-face or synchronously online. Through simple ideas, thought-provoking questions, and practical examples, Engaging Learners Everywhere reveals how existing technology, such as video conferencing and digital collaboration tools, can help bring students together in more robust and inclusive learning communities. This teaching model minimizes the disruptions and challenges instructors frequently encounter due to inclement weather, illnesses, and travel conflicts. Additionally, features such as live captioning, screen sharing, and classroom recordings benefit all students, not just those with disability accommodations. Ultimately, Interactive Synchronous HyFlex provides a more elastic pedagogical approach that allows students to remain engaged and connected to their instructors and to each other.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Trauma Beyond Time: Temporal Constructs in Holocaust Testimonies challenges our understanding of what it means to be a Holocaust survivor, arguing that the term "post-Holocaust" fundamentally misrepresents survivors' experiences. Through careful analysis of Holocaust literature and testimony, this book reveals how trauma persists across generations, defying conventional historical timelines. For those who perished, there can be no "after" to the Holocaust-their stories were violently ended. Yet for survivors, the Holocaust didn't simply conclude in 1945. Their experiences demonstrate how trauma continues to shape lives decades later, making "post-Holocaust" a misleading concept that fails to capture their ongoing reality. Using the multigenerational testimony of the Tabak family as a case study, this research shows how trauma disrupts linear time, creating a continuous present where past horrors remain alive. The author examines Holocaust diaries that end abruptly with their authors' deaths, alongside memoirs that document how survivors navigate a world forever altered by their experiences. Perhaps most profound is the examination of intergenerational trauma, where descendants inherit the psychological imprint of events they never personally witnessed. For these individuals, there is no "before" the Holocaust-only its ongoing echoes through family memory and inherited trauma. By reconsidering how we frame survivorship, this book calls for a more nuanced, trauma-informed approach to Holocaust studies that honors the continuing reality of survivors' experiences.

Listening to Place delves into the sonic world to reveal how sound serves as an essential element when engaging in community planning. This book provides easy-to-use tools that explore sounds from a positive viewpoint, such as identifying and preserving distinct cultural sounds of place, to those that are harmful, particularly loud noise. It also supplies planners with step-by-step processes as well as an explanation of key terms that are important for soundscape planning. A comprehensive rubric of sound sources and how communities might better value them are included, along with a unique ear-appeal assessment exercise that can be conducted by members of all communities. Finally, Listening to Place suggests new strategies for soundscape planning, and offers references to several national ordinances and other resources that describe soundscapes and the environment.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. This book analyzes the crisis of the idea of human being based on timeless notions, in the Euroamerican context, as seen primarily through literature and cinema. It focuses on Italy, which has been and remains a crossroads for diverse cultural and political currents-open to Mediterranean cultural influences while remaining within a typically Western cultural context. The "new man," defined by Corrado Alvaro during his trip in Russia in 1934 as "transitional," implies a human being with a fundamental need for change. Instead of the "new man," Italo Calvino in the 1960 preface to his I nostri antenati wrote about the incomplete human being who is always changing, always being completed without ever reaching completion, and thus always in transition. In these pages, the author examines the twentieth- and twenty-first-centuries Italian metamorphosis of the concept of the human being, mirroring closely at every historical turn the contextual demands of the country. From Brignone's film Sotto la croce del sud (1938), and its faulted "biracial" protagonists to the Netflix series Summertime (2020), characterized by the intentional lack of problematization of a multicultural society; from the fascist manhood represented by Roberto Rossellini's aviator "modern knight of our time"(1942), to Fellini's Marcello who chooses to not choose (1959); from Marinetti's idea of the woman who belonged "to the race's development" (1919) to Mazzacurati's Mara, who wishes "to live thirteen different lives" (2007); from Primo Levi's non-humans and stripped men, to not-belonging, to Arendt's stateless persons, to migrants crossing the desert and the Mediterranean sea in Segre's and Rosi's movies (2008, 2016): the journey chronicled in these pages is a surprising one, as today's Italy is very different than that imagined toward the second half of the nineteenth century.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. October 7, 2023, was a watershed event in contemporary Jewish history. What took place on that date challenged the two most basic assumptions of post-Holocaust Jewish life: that the future security of the Jewish people would be assured by an independent Jewish state backed by an army, and that the freedom for Jews in the Diaspora to live as Jews would be secured by democratic rights and liberties. The pogroms of October 7 and the worldwide explosion of antisemitism that followed-even preceding Israel taking military action against Hamas-challenged both assumptions. The Israel Defense Forces could not prevent a slaughter from occurring even in the independent State of Israel, and throughout the world democracies seem less secure than at any time in the post-World War II era. The editors have turned to leading Jewish thinkers in the United States, Israel, and Europe to grapple with the implications of October 7 with respect to the Jewish future, the State of Israel, the relationship of Jews with Israel, and the character of Israel's relationships in the world. A Shattered World is one of the first scholarly collections of essays to address the hard question of what the nature of the Jewish future should be.

Indiana at a Glance: County Trends, 2025 Edition provides an overview of macro socioeconomic and demographic trends based on county-level data in ten-year periods in Indiana, the upper Midwest region, and the nation. Analyzing data primarily from 2013 through 2023, this book presents information that contextualizes the design and implementation of specific policies enacted by elected officials and community leaders, and reveals the impact these initiatives have on the public. Inspired, in part, by the United States Department of Agriculture's Rural America at a Glance reports, as well as the author's more than twenty years of work in the field, this study makes use of gap analysis to glean valuable insights into how specific socioeconomic patterns relate to larger regional or national trends. It also offers a fuller picture of community economic development planning, allowing community stakeholders to better discern unique opportunities and challenges from macro socioeconomic and demographic noise. Accessible to scholars and nonacademics alike, Indiana at a Glance is meant to assist community leaders and residents who wish to have a firmer grasp of the socioeconomic and demographic landscape of their communities as they attempt to plan, design, implement, and evaluate their policies and initiatives or simply better understand their communities. The content and analysis supplied in this book will be updated every five years to ensure the most current data is available in order to align with the temporal "horizon" under which community economic development practitioners and policymakers frequently operate.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Del policial clásico al post-neopolicial: La estética del crimen en la narrativa mexicana, 1940-2020 is a comprehensive study of Mexican crime fiction from cultural, gender, social, political, and literary perspectives. This book covers the different phases Mexican crime fiction has evolved through in the past eighty years: classical detective fiction (1940-1960s), género negro (1970s), neopolicial (1980-2000), narconarrative (1990s to the present), and post-neopolicial (2000 to the present). The first half of the book offers an overview of the development of crime fiction in the United States, how it was adopted by Mexican writers in the 1940s, and the changes it went through in its various phases. Writers studied include, among others, Paco Ignacio Taibo II, Rafael Ramírez Heredia, and Juan Hernández Luna. In addition, the author of this book coins a new term, post-neopolicial, to describe the most current form of crime fiction in the twenty-first century as exemplified in a corpus of novels that depict the realities of contemporary Mexico. The second half of the book focuses on the evolution of crime fiction by Mexican women writers from the 1940s to the present: from the classic detective formula to contemporary realistic narratives protagonized by subversive female characters in the works of María Elvira Bermúdez, Margos de Villanueva, Rosa Margot Ochoa, Ana María Maqueo, Carmen Boullosa, Myriam Laurini, Susana Pagano, Liliana Blum, Cristina Rivera Garza, Ana Ivonne Reyes Chiquete, Orfa Alarcón, Malú Huacuja del Toro, and others.

A monument "for one hundred thousand citizens of Kyiv and prisoners of the war" was erected in Babyn Yar in 1976, but the Holocaust was not mentioned in its inscription. With the collapse of communism, state anti-Semitism ended. Holocaust commemoration became an important part of national memory politics in independent Ukraine. In the last few decades, over thirty monuments have been built at Babyn Yar, which are dedicated to the memory of Jews, Roma, members of the resistance movement, and other people executed there. However, heated debates continue about the commemoration of the Babyn Yar massacre.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Shattered Liberation: Sexualized Violence Against Holocaust Survivors, 1943-1946 challenges the notion of joyous liberation of Holocaust survivors by the Red Army, which is often embedded in popular imagination and collective memory. This is one of the first volumes to shine light on the sexualized violence that some Holocaust survivors endured in the hands of the Soviet Army, partisans, rescuers, and army personnel in filtration camps during the liberation process. By focusing on testimonies and memoirs, this book discusses in detail a wide range of interactions, including exploitation, sexual violence, rape, forced cohabitation, sex barter, aid, and romance. The book addresses methodological challenges of employing survivors' testimonies in an analysis of a traumatic history of liberation sexualized violence. It explores the strategies survivors employed while recounting these traumatic experiences, and examines how survivors' experiences of sexualized violence during liberation have been both included in and excluded from public memory. By challenging the popular notion of liberation as universally positive and instead focusing on the memories of Jewish survivors, Shattered Liberation uncovers a far more complicated, if not devastating, reality.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Histories of design pay scant attention to the corded telephone, which played an immeasurable role in early communication.

Level 1 introduces basic terms and concepts, and is intended for youth in grades 3-5. Activities focus on understanding important soil and water processes. Designed for students in grades 6-8, Level 2 offers readers more concrete examples of advanced soil and water concepts. The exercises in Level 3, which is geared toward grades 9-12, are divided into sections based on how readers might use the information they have learned, placing them in the shoes of homeowners, residents of a watershed, food and fiber producers (farmers), mayors, teachers, and legislators. This level delves deeper into soil and water science concepts, and prepares readers who may be interested in studying these topics at postsecondary institutions. The final section presented in Soil and Water Education for Grades 3-12, the facilitator's guide, provides answers to the youth activities as well as tips about working with the next generation of scientists in the field.
