Hardcover. A matte hardcover book with white text down a gray spine. Unpaginated. Profusely illustrated with color images. "Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb take an elegiac look at Rochester, New York. For this project, Alex took images with his last rolls of Kodachrome, a formerly vibrant color film that can now only be processed as black-and-white. The resulting photos have a weathered quality akin to a fading memory. Alex also took to the streets of Rochester and shot in digital color--work that punctuates the black and white work with images from his signature style. Rebecca, who still uses film for all her work, responded to the medium's uncertain future by creating an elegiac refrain of color still lifes and portraits of Rochester women past and present. Woven into the book are quotes by many of the famous writers and thinkers who have been connected to Rochester, including women's rights activist Susan B. Anthony, abolitionist Frederick Douglass, and poets John Ashbery and Ilya Kaminsky. And the authors have also created a timeline on the cultural history of the city that traces the evolution of a once-vibrant and now complex city." VG: Exlibrary book. Sticker at the base of the spine. There is a small tear in the surface of the spine that affects the text running down ti. Sticker on front free end page. Hardcover. A casebound book with three-quarter black-and-white illustrated paper over the spine. Unpaginated. Profusely illustrated with a majority color images. "This series by photographer Justin Kimball (born 1961) features small towns in New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Ohio brought to the brink of obsolescence by the recent financial downturn, capturing their streets, residents and landscapes in photographs both sensitive to their subjects and compositionally striking. While imbued with social and political subtext, Kimball's images--of ramshackle buildings against a landscape, a mother and baby on their front porch, roadside church signs and teenagers playing a game of pickup basketball--carry a broader significance. In his depiction of communities faced by hardship, Kimball examines the persistence of hope and the concept of what it means to be human in our modern world. His photographs document a growing--yet often overlooked--portion of the American landscape, providing an impressive portrait of the present day." VG: Exlibary book. Sticker at the base of the spine. Hardcover. A casebound book with the title in red and in black down an off-white spine. Pages: (8), 9-149, (1). Profusely illustrated with color images. "Matt Magee: Works 2012-2018 covers a period when Magee transitioned to Phoenix, Arizona, in 2012 after living and working in New York City for thirty years. Since moving to the Southwest, his art explores language and communication as investigative acts. He mines materiality, navigation, landscape, repetition, process, texting and email to produce paintings and objects that explore alternative ways of understanding surface and sequence. Beginning in the mid-1970s, Magee went with his geologist father (up until his death in 2008) on field trips from their home base in Texas to visit Native American rock art sites throughout the American West and saw hundreds if not thousands of pictographs and petroglyphs. In his twenties, he saw that this flat glyphic information sharing related to images he was seeing in art history courses, and the idea that meaning could be imparted through simple formal gesture and mark making was an early lesson." Hardcover. A matte hardcover book with the title in white down a busy yellow, green, blue, and pink spine. Pages: (7), 8-100, (26). Profusely illustrated with color images, including several foldout displays. "The culmination of a decade of work in the American West, 'Signal Noise' presents an open-ended meditation on our desire to connect with the natural world, and the limits of our abilities to do so. Photographs altered with unconventional digital processing ask us to reflect on the nature of individual perceptual experience and the impact of our collective presence in the landscape. The images in Signal Noise are rooted in Rothman's response to places familiar and meaningful to him, but his interest lies in the transformative rather than the documentary nature of photography. Landscapes overtaken by digital noise, layering, erasure, amplification, and interference examine the blurry boundaries between natural and artificial, between real and virtual, and between the world and how we perceive it. Interspersed views of desert mountain vistas and dense forests, made with fallibly perfect photographic clarity, anchor the work in the space of the physical world while also casting doubt about what is real and what is a figment of photographic, perceptual or human alteration." Hardcover. A clothbound book with the title in dark gray down a muted green spine. When open the spine lays flat and the leaves remain bound in a strip of white cloth. Pages: (6), 7-129, (1). Profusely illustrated with color images. "Transcendental Concord documents the spirit of Transcendentalism, the literary, social, and philosophical movement that arose in the mid-19th century. While the circle of Transcendentalists in New England was wide, at its center was a core group that lived in Concord, Massachusetts. Bronson Alcott and daughter Louisa May Alcott, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Henry David Thoreau lived within a few miles of each other for nearly 20 years, regularly meeting in each other's homes and on the paths of Walden Woods to discuss their writings and beliefs. In the course of a year and in every season North-Carolina based photographer Lisa McCarty photographed the sites where these Transcendentalists lived and wrote in Concord. McCarty's parallel reverence for the natural world is evident in her photographs which point to large and small variations in environment, season and light. McCarty uses long exposures and camera movement in order to capture these variations. Transcendental Concord pays homage to Transcendentalism not only in capturing a shared landscape, but in McCarty's technique: her keen observation of natural phenomena and openness to experimentation and chance." Hardcover. Matte, color-illustrated boards with the title printed in white down a predominantly reddish spine. The front free and pasted end pages are robin's egg blue. Pages: (10), 11-179, (2). Profusely illustrated with color images. Ted Larsen: Works 2007-2023 is the first monograph for the visual artist, bringing together over fifteen years of creative output. As contributor David Pagel notes, Larsen's sculptural works are not easily categorized and often "behave like abstract paintings." Since 2001, Larsen has sought alternative and salvaged materials in his abstract constructions with the "hope of bringing purist shapes and surfaces back down to earth." This quest takes Larsen to sites like the metal scrapyard, where he mines the raw material for his work by sawing off sections of older-model vehicles. The works' surfaces, which hold a particular patinated palette, are unmodified; the colors of the metal that skin the objects--the rusty off-white of an old pickup truck or the vibrant yellow of a decommissioned school bus--are exactly as he found them. Calling to mind both architecture and the reductive forms associated with the Minimalists of the 1960s and 1970s, Larsen's works upend and defy classification by embracing experimentation, the spontaneous gesture, and the hybrid, while undermining the idea of Modernist purity. Hardcover. A beautifully designed hardcover book. Stitched binding covered with white cloth is pasted by its first pages into a hardback shell, making it so the hardcover can lay completely flat. The cover features two illustrations-- one across the front and the spine, with debossed red and gray lettering; the other across the back cover. On the inside of the back cover is a pocket containing a long foldout of a series of photos. The front end pages are a map, and has a foldout to view it in a comfortable size. Pages: (72), (156). There are 72 images of Raphael Pumpelly's travel book and its contents at the start on leaves smaller than the rest of the book. Following this are 66 full-page color plates. "Much of Mark Klett's (born 1952) work as a photographer has centered on a conversation with historical images. For this project, Klett worked only with the account of a young mining engineer named Raphael Pumpelly who wrote of his journey through Arizona and Mexico in 1861 on the Camino del Diablo or "the road of the devil." Pumpelly found the territory lawless and filled with danger. The authorities were virtually non-existent. Mexican laborers working in the silver mines south of Tucson were perpetually killing their Anglo bosses. The Apache Indians led constant raids and ambushes. By Pumpelly's account "murder was the order of the day . committed by Americans upon Americans, Mexicans and Indians; by Mexicans upon Americans; and the hand of the Apache was, not without much reason, against both of the intruding races." He escaped death several times, often by a matter of minutes. Traveling 130 miles of open desert, Pumpelly proceeded with both apprehension of the dangers at hand, and appreciation of the natural beauty that surrounded him. 152 years later, Klett traversed the same route, making photographs in response to Pumpelly's words. Unable to trace the engineer's exact steps, Klett created images that are not literal references to specific places or events. Rather he sought to produce a more poetic narrative to their shared experience of the Arizona desert, along the common route that connects the two through time. Today, most of the Camino is located on the Barry M. Goldwater Bombing Range and the border is a militarized zone constantly patrolled by government agents and crisscrossed by air and ground forces practicing for war. Camino travelers often hide from detection, be they immigrants or drug smugglers moving North under the cover of night or the ruggedness of the terrain. Indian reservations create boundaries and mark other cultural divides. A still hostile climate kills many who dare travel in hot weather and people die each year on the Camino, most from exposure. Yet the Camino also crosses one of the most beautiful and still wild regions of the Sonoran Desert. The Camino has an occupied feel that registers the history of violence and surveillance along the border. There's a legacy of human presence, sometimes tragedy, left only in traces. Signs of passage remain for centuries in Arizona's dry climate. It is a place located at the compelling intersection of transience, danger and beauty." VG: Two stickers on the spine from previous owner. Otherwise in excellent condition. Clean, tight binding, and still with supplimental cactus foldout.…

Hardcover. Matte printed boards with a matching dust jacket. The dust jacket has white text down a black spine. Pages: (8), 9-95, (1). Profusely illustrated with black-and-white images. "Beginning in the mid-1990s, Louisiana-born photographer Debbie Fleming Caffery lived and worked on the grounds of the Catholic church in a small village in northeastern Mexico using a tortilla shack as her studio. In addition to the religious life of the town, she turned her lens on the nearby cantina that occasionally served as a brothel. "The Spirit and the Flesh" explores the themes of grace, redemption, sin and forgiveness that Caffery encountered in this community--of which she has said, "I felt incredibly comfortable in a culture rich in celebrations of religious feasts, with strong, independent, highly emotional people, much like the people I grew up with in southwest Louisiana. The brothel brought new elements into my work: secrets, sensual needs, desire and, often, unexpected love." Debbie Fleming Caffery has been making photographs of the people and culture of her native Louisiana for more than 30 years; this is her fourth book." VG/VG: Exlibrary book. Hardcover. Condizione: As New. Condizione sovraccoperta: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 108 pages. Published in 2016. Debut collection of color photographs. One of the most beautiful art photography books of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. A brilliant production by David Chickey: Oversize-volume format. Pink cloth boards, as issued. Photographs by Frances F. Denny. Original piece, "Primer", by Lisa Locascio. The latter beautifully complements the evocative portraits of contemporary descendants of the original Mayflower/Puritan settlers of America. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Verona, Italy to the highest standards. In integral protective plastic covers with white titles printed in front and on the spine, as issued. Presents Frances F. Denny's "Let Virtue Be Your Guide". Her award-winning sequence of portraits of women-descendants, and their surroundings, of the very first white settlers of America. "Examines the author's family and their deeply-rooted history as early settlers of New England (one ancestor, John Howland, was a deckhand aboard The Mayflower). Unearthing the idea of feminine virtue from the confines of its historical meaning, Denny's photographs of the women in her family have a watchful quality, as if she is defining for herself what it means to be a woman. Her subjects, and the domestic spaces they inhabit, together evoke a distinct and well-worn privilege. But Denny finds the places where seams pull apart, exposing the shifts occurring across generations of women. A search for meaning in heritage, a challenge to the notion of legacy, and the artist's reckoning with a traditional version of American femininity" (Publisher's blurb). The title is a nod to The Past, the modernized version of "Let Virtue Be A Guide To Thee" (1730), a series of books published during the Colonial Period, instruction manuals for women on needlepoint and other crafts. The work speaks for itself: Its luminous, understated palette draws you in, making you (somehow) feel at home. Even if you will always be an outsider to this self-contained world, Denny does not make you feel like an unwelcome tourist. An absolute "must-have" title for Frances F. Denny collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed, placed, and dated (two months before publication) in black ink-pen on the title page by the photographer: "April 1, 2016 Chicago Frances F. Denny". It is also very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on her Contribution by Lisa Locascio. It is signed directly on the pages themselves, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such double-signed, placed, and pre-publication dated copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: This is an Advance Signed Copy, obtained in person. The book was not released to the public until end-May 2016. A rare signed copy thus. 36 color plates, 1 fold-out photographic insert. One of the most brilliant American photographers of our time. A fine copy. ISBN 1942185006. Signed by Author.…

Hardcover. A casebound book with a dust jacket that has gray text down a gray spine. Pages: (20), 21-249, (2). Profusely illustrated with a majority color images. Out of print. A follow-up to her successful 2015 book The Meadow, this project focuses on Boston-based photographer Barbara Bosworth's (born 1953) images of the moon, sun and sky. Made over the past several years with an 8x10 camera, the star images are hour-long exposures with the camera mounted on a clock drive. The sun and moon images are made with a telescope attached to her camera. Speaking of her inspiration for these images, Bosworth writes: "Every clear night of the summer my father would go out for a walk to look at the night sky. Many nights I would join him. We knew the North Star, and the Big Bear, but the rest became our own. At times we stood still for an hour or more to watch for shooting stars. We had no agenda. It was all about amazement at a sky full of stars. With this sense of wonder, I began making photographs of the Heavens. In these days of the Hubble Telescope and its spectacular imagery from deep space, I wanted a reminder of the mystery of our own night sky." The book also includes facsimile editions of three artist's books that Bosworth has made as a nod to Galileo's 17th-century publications in which he first observed the skies through a telescope.
