Paperback. Condizione: New. Photography is omnipresent; everyone is photographing everything. How do artists and writers reconcile this voracious urge to photograph with a photographic aesthetic and methodology that has tended to value "less is more"?One pairs artists and writers to think about this question. Eight photographers…-Marco Breuer, Thomas Joshua Cooper, John Gossage, Trevor Paglen, Alison Rossiter, Victoria Sambunaris, Rebecca Norris Webb and James Welling-were asked to submit one image on the theme of minimalism. Eight writers-David Campany, Teju Cole, Christie Davis, John D'Agata, Michael Fried, Darius Himes, Leah Ollman and Laura Steward-were enlisted to respond to those submissions, each paired with a specific image. The results offer a probing assessment of Antoine de Saint-Exupery's maxim: "Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.".

Hardback. Condizione: New. A photographic encyclopedia of Western female hairstyles across the agesIn The Hunt, London-based French photographer Céline Bodin (born 1990) creates a concise survey of female hairstyles across various periods in time, within the framework of Western culture. The series reflects upon the pictorial qu…alities of hair: studying its materiality and its ability to convey identity, while also recalling the Victorian "hair medallion"-a small, decorative keepsake made from an ornate curl of a loved one's hair, a pre-photographic memento that draws connections between portraiture, identity and memory. The figures appear as ornate statues, each characterized by the aesthetic associations and revisited stereotypes of their hairstyle. The anonymity of the images presented in The Hunt activates the mind's associative aptitude, drawing upon one's own fantasies and projections of sensuality, innocence, order, freedom, frivolity and social rank. Echoing classical art, these images refer to a mystical icon rather than presenting a portrait of an individual.

Hardback. Condizione: New. Miki Kratsman (born 1959) has worked as a photojournalist in the Palestinian Occupied Territories for over three decades. Originally created in the context of daily news, his photographs look at both "wanted men"--individuals sought by the Israeli state--and the everyman and everywoman on the street wh…o, by virtue of being Palestinian in a particular time and place, can be seen as a "suspect." Kratsman has also provoked long-term interaction around the images on social media, creating a Facebook page on which viewers are invited to identify the individuals portrayed and comment on their "fate." This complex project is chronicled in this book in more than 300 images that powerfully implicate the viewer. A text by Ariella Azoulay explores the ways in which the shadow of death is an actual threat that hovers over Kratsman's subjects.

Hardback. Condizione: New. Rift refers to the eastern edge of the North American Plate where it meets the Eurasian Plate along the Mid-Atlantic Rift in Iceland. New crust is formed as magma pushes up from the mantle; the land along the rift is unstable and raw. Marion Belanger (born 1957) documents this land and its structures:…geothermal electricity, hot pools, volcanic excavation sites, houses, new earth and cultural relics within the landscape. In Fault, meanwhile, she photographs the shifting western edge of the North American Continental Plate along the San Andreas Fault in California, focusing on traces of the tectonic plate edge and the artifacts of our built environment upon them. Though characterized by earthquake activity, the landscape is often striking in its visual normalcy.Capturing moments of anticipation in settings that shift between the wild and the contained, Rift/Fault creates a visual tension that questions the relationship between geologic force and the limits of human intervention.

Hardback. Condizione: New. There is a twisted steel dome in Hiroshima that stands as a grim reminder of the city's destruction by the first atomic bomb. Halfway around the globe, on the border of Utah and Nevada, stands another ruin. The site that housed the bomber that carried "Little Boy," Wendover Army Air Base, now crumbles…from neglect. The stories and relics of Wendover describe more than just the past; they point to a historic cycle, a present increasingly filled with new threats of devastating nuclear and chemical warfare. For this book, American photographer Mark Klett (born 1952) has teamed up with William L. Fox, a celebrated science and art writer whose work focuses on human cognition and memory. Together, the two have created a fascinating visual and textual portrait of Wendover Army Air Base, examining the experience of memory in relation to the great tragedy of America's atomic age.

A photographic fever dream of America's Midwest, from the author of Homegrown and Domestic VacationsFor her third monograph, Midwest Materials, Julie Blackmon has created a new body of work that sparkles with the wit, dark humor and irony for which the photographer has gained such renown. Finding insig…ht and inspiration in the seeming monotony of her "generic American hometown" of Springfield, Missouri, Blackmon constructs a captivating, fictitious world that is both playful and menacing. "I think of myself as a visual artist working in the medium of photography," Blackmon notes, "and my assignment is to chart the fever dreams of American life." Midwest Materials follows Domestic Vacations (Radius Books, 2008) and Homegrown (Radius Books, 2014).Julie Blackmon (born 1966) pursued studies in art education and photography at Missouri State University. Her photographs are included in the permanent collections of the Cleveland Museum of Art; George Eastman House, Rochester, NY; Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Toledo Museum of Art; Portland Art Museum; Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; and numerous others. She is represented by Robert Mann Gallery, Haw Contemporary and Fahey Klein, among others. Blackmon lives and works in Springfield, Missouri.

Hardback. Condizione: New. Contemporary artists and writers from Jennie C. Jones to Teju Cole consider Agnes Martin's influence and legacyThis is a reenvisioned, fresh look at Agnes Martin, the enigmatic, influential, highly independent painter whose life and work have proved inspirational to audiences across many fields and dis…ciplines. Accompanied by color reproductions of works by Martin, Agnes Martin: Independence of Mind presents a series of essays by living artists and writers commissioned especially for this volume. Contributors include artists Martha Tuttle, Jennie C. Jones and James Sterling Pitt, as well as authors Teju Cole, Bethany Hindmarsh, Darcey Steinke and Jenn Shapland. These contributors write about Martin's influence on their creative lives and work, and offer new interpretations that defy stereotyped notions about Martin's life. Longer essays are mixed with shorter, more anecdotal texts by a wider selection of artists.Agnes Martin was born in Maklin, Saskatchewan, Canada, in 1912, and moved to the US in 1932, studying at universities in Oregon, California, New Mexico and New York. In the early 1950s she developed a biomorphic style influenced by Abstract Expressionism. Her first solo exhibition was held at the Betty Parsons Gallery, New York, in 1958. From around 1960-61 she began to work with the grids of horizontal and vertical lines for which she has become renowned. In 1967 she moved from New York to New Mexico, where she lived until her death in 2004.

Hardback. Condizione: New. This debut monograph from award-winning Belgian photographer Maroesjka Lavigne (born 1989) includes six of the artist's series: Island, Land of Nothingness, Habitat, Not Seeing is a Flower, Animal Cabinet and You Are More than Beautiful. Each of these series spans several years in the making, in which…the artist traveled throughout Iceland, Korea, Japan and many parts of Africa, observing landscapes and their inhabitants.Lavigne's subjects range from stark landscapes to spare, haunting portraits and unforgettable animal images; she produces stunningly beautiful images that are tenderly attuned to their settings and subjects. As the photographer puts it: "When you take a picture in a beautiful place, you have to realize that nature isn't the background for your photograph. Rather, you are its prop.".

Hardback. Condizione: New. The Sorcerer's Burden: Contemporary Art and the Anthropological Turn explores the complicated relationship between art and anthropology as it has been probed in the work of contemporary artists. Focusing on artists who appropriate, manipulate and transform elements found in anthropological methodologie…s and practices to create contemporary works that are alternately subversive, humorous, satirical, dark, playful and enchanting, The Sorcerer's Burden considers the complex results that emerge when contemporary artists, curators and exhibitions turn to anthropology. These artists working in painting, sculpture, photography, film, video and performance explore the intersection between fact and fiction, and the questionable proposal that any field, media or genre might propose to convey the truth. Artists featured in this volume include Ed Atkins, Nuotama Frances Bodomo, Theo Eshetu, Cameron Jamie, Kapwani Kiwanga, Marie Lorenz, Nathan Mabry, Ruben Ochoa, Dario Robleto, Shimabuku and Julia Wachtel.

Hardback. Condizione: New. From the author of Welcome to Camp America, an eerie exploration of America's performance of power and identity in the post-9/11 era What are the stories we tell ourselves, the games we play, to manage unsettling realities? Made on ten military bases across the United States since 2016, Necessary Ficti…ons documents mock-village landscapes in the fictional country of "Atropia" and its denizens, roleplayers who enact versions of their past or future selves in realistic training scenarios.Costumed Afghan and Iraqi civilians, many of whom have fled war, now recreate it in the service of the US military. Real soldiers pose in front of camouflage backdrops, dressed by Hollywood makeup artists in "moulage"-fake wounds-as they prepare to deploy.Brooklyn-based conceptual documentary artist and former civil rights lawyer Debi Cornwall (born 1973) photographs this meta-reality-the artifice of war-presented in the book with a variety of texts to provoke critical inquiry about America's fantasy industrial complex. The book includes an essay by PEN Award-winning critical theorist Sarah Sentilles.

Hardback. Condizione: New. Transformative minimalism: surveying Larsen's ingenious synthesis of worn patina and geometric rigorThis is the first monograph on Sante Fe-based sculptor Ted Larsen (born 1964), bringing together over 15 years of creative output. Since 2001, Larsen has sought alternative and salvaged materials in his…abstract constructions with the "hope of bringing purist shapes and surfaces back down to earth." This quest takes Larsen to sites such as the metal scrapyard, where he mines the raw material for his work by sawing off sections of older-model vehicles. The works' surfaces, which hold a strongly patinated palette, are unmodified; the colors of the metal that skin the objects-the rusty off-white of an old pickup truck or the vibrant yellow of a decommissioned school bus-are exactly as he found them. Calling to mind both architecture and the reductive forms associated with Minimalism, Larsen's works upend and defy classification.

A multimedia portrait of a fictional woman artist caught between two culturesIn her latest body of work, multimedia artist Shirin Neshat (born 1957) turns her focus to the American West. With more than 100 photographs, a two-channel video installation and a feature film, Neshat creates a multilayered l…ook at contemporary America through the eyes of a fictionalized artist. Monumental black-and-white photographs are transformed through Neshat's use of Farsi text and images that have been hand-drawn onto the picture. The texts represent Neshat's interpretation of the dreams of the sitter, with references to ancient myths and ideologies. Neshat works and experiments with photography, video and film, imbuing them with highly poetic and politically charged images and narratives that question issues of power, religion, race, gender and the relationship between the past and present, occident and orient, individual and collective through the lens of her personal experiences as an Iranian woman living in exile.

Landscape photography between representation and abstraction: new adventures in print and tonality from scott b. davisCalifornian photographer scott b. davis' (born 1971) recent work uses combinations of in-camera palladium paper negatives and traditional film-based platinum/palladium prints. The image…s explore the boundaries of visibility in the darkness and overwhelming light of the Sonoran Desert, creating pictures of landscapes that are both literal and abstract. The light and space found in the open desert are felt in these uniquely rendered images comprised of diptychs, triptychs and occasional works that include as many as 10 or 12 unique images in a series.By using exposure to intense UV light, davis has pioneered a process that captures images invisible to the naked eye, creating prints rich in contrast to push the boundaries of the visible spectrum and the perceptual limits of human vision. His prints invite closer, deeper looking at landscapes that seem familiar to us in the daylight but evolve into something altogether different when rendered as abstract records of place. The aim is not to represent the desert as we think we know it, but to evoke an intimate connection with the desert through new perspectives.
